The Lord Donaldson of Lymington, PC, Master of the Rolls, 1982-92, died suddenly at his home in Lymington, Hampshire, 31 August, 2005. He was aged 84.
John Francis Donaldson was born 6 October, 1920, the son of Malcolm Donaldson, FRCS, FRCOG, by his wife Evelyn Helen Marguerite Maunsell, and was educated at Charterhouse and Trinity College, Cambridge (Hon. Fellow, 1983).

Donaldson was knighted in 1966; sworn of the Privy Council, 1979; created a life peer as Baron Donaldson of Lymington, of Lymington in the County of Hampshire, 1988.
He married in 1945, Dorothy Mary (Dame Mary Donaldson, GBE, Lord Mayor of London, 1983-84) daughter of Reginald George Gale Warwick, by his wife Dorothy Alice. She died in 2003.
Lord Donaldson leaves a son, Michael, and 2 daughters.
