The 5th Earl of Dudley, who died in Spain, 7 February, 2026, aged 78, was a socialite, man about town, who made gossip column fodder in the 1970s.
William Humble David Jeremy Ward was born 27 March, 1947, the first-born son of the 4th Earl of Dudley (1920-2013), godson of the Duke of Windsor, and his first wife Stella Carcano y Morra, daughter of Dr Miguel Angel Carcano, KBE [Hon], sometime Argentine Ambassador to the Court of St James.
He was styled Viscount Ednam from 1969 to 2013, and succeeded his father, 16 November, 2013, as Viscount Ednam [UK, 1860], Earl of Dudley [UK, 1860], & Baron Ward [England, cr 1644].
He married 1stly, 3 July, 1972 [div 1976], Sarah Mary Coates [born 18 Aug, 1948], daughter of Sir Alastair Coates, 4th Baronet [1921-2015], and his wife the former Lukyn Gordon [died 19 Oct, 2006]; married 2ndly, 1976 [div 1980] Debra Louise Pinney, daughter of George Robert Pinney, by whom he had a daughter, Lady Bethany Louise Ward [born 1977],
Lord Dudley is succeeded by his half-brother, the Hon Leander Grenville Dudley Ward (born 30 October, 1971]- The 6th Earl is a son of the 4th Earl and the actress Maureen Swanson [1932-2011]. He wed Laura Sevier, and is the father of three daughters.
