Doris, Baroness Cromwell 1930-2014

 Doris, Baroness Cromwell, who died in 2014, was the widow of the 6th Baron Cromwell (1929-1982).

The Barony of Cromwell was created by Writ, 28 December, 1375, and spent 426 years in abeyance until 1923 when it was called out of abeyance in favour of the 6th Baron's grandfather.

Lady Cromwell was born Doris Vivian Penfold, the youngest daughter of Hugh de Lisle Penfold (1895-1977), of Milbourne Lane, Esher, Surrey, and a granddaughter of the Rev John Brookes Vernon Penfold (1864-1922), and his wife Maude Frances Carey (1865-1913), scion of that landed gentry family, formerly of La Ville-au-Roy, Guernsey.

She married 16 January, 1954, the then Hon David Godfrey Bewicke-Copley (born 29 May, 1929), son and heir of the 5th Baron Cromwell, DSO, MC, JP, DL (1893-1966), and his wife the former Freda Constance Cripps (who died 1979), only daughter of Maj Sir Frederick William Beresford Cripps DSO, of Ampney Park, Cirencester, co. Gloucester, by his wife Constance Agnes Wykeham MBE, 2nd dau. of Philip James Digby Wykeham, of Tythrop House, co. Oxford. Her husband succeeded his father as 6th Baron Cromwell, 21 October, 1966, and died 18 August, 1982.

Lady Cromwell leaves issue, two sons, Godfrey and Thomas, and two daughters, Anne and Davina. The elder son, Godfrey John Bewicke-Copley (born 4 March, 1960), is the 7th Baron Cromwell.
