To Harry and Meghan, a note: courtesy titles are derived by courtesy of the Crown.

_. Much has been written since the Duchess of Sussex's recent explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey on the alleged 'snub' to the Queen's great-grandson, Archie, and that he has been deprived of a title. I would suggest that the 'snub' here is on the other foot, and that it's the Sussexes who have snubbed the monarch in a churlish, and disrespectful manner. Harry and Meghan should be reminded that titles of courtesy come as courtesy from the Crown, and not from a parent.

The decision of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to deny their son a courtesy title is I think unique in the annals of the peerage.

In a complete break with tradition and with the laws governing peerages, and the styles and titles of courtesy relating to the children of peers, it was announced in May, 2019 that Archie Mountbatten-Windsor would not use a courtesy title associated with the Dukedom of Sussex.

It was expected that Archie would be styled as Earl of Dumbarton, which is Prince Harry's earldom, created with the Dukedom of Sussex and Barony of Kilkeel in May, 2018. The eldest sons of dukes in the peerages of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain and the United Kingdom traditionally assume their father's second senior peerage, as a 'courtesy' title. Some eldest sons decide to use a lesser title, as in the case of the eldest son of the Duke of Devonshire, who continues to be known as Earl of Burlington instead of the more senior Marquess of Hartington. If the Sussexes dislike the idea of Archie being Earl of Dumbarton then he could instead be known as Lord Kilkeel.

However, following Archie's birth, a statement quickly followed that no courtesy titles would be borne by the seventh in line to the throne, and that he would be known as Master Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

The eldest son of a duke by custom uses one of his father's peerages as a 'courtesy' title, and he is also 'Lord' [Christian name] Surname, and was born so, and is recorded as such at the College of Arms in London.

Harry and Meghan's second child will be born Lady [Christian name] Mountbatten-Windsor. This courtesy title will not be granted or bestowed by the Queen at birth as it is an automatic qualification. The 'courtesy title' comes as courtesy from the Crown, and not as a courtesy from a parent. If Harry and Meghan deny their daughter the courtesy title of a daughter of a duke they are in effect snubbing the Crown. Whether the courtesy title is used or not will not affect how the child's rank is recorded at the College of Arms.

In cases where a person succeeds to a peerage from a cousin or relation other than a parent then the siblings of that new peer do not automatically assume courtesy titles, and apply to the Crown to be so granted. Claims are reviewed and when approved the Crown Office issues the following:

'Her Majesty has been graciously pleased by Warrant under her Royal Signet and Sign Manual bearing the date …. to ordain and declare that …..(name of person seeking courtesy title) .. shall henceforth have, hold and enjoy the same title, rank, place, pre-eminence and precedence as the children of a ….Duke/Marquess/Earl/Viscount/Baron... as would have been due to them had their father … (his name)… succeeded to the title and dignity of Duke of …….and to command that the said Royal Concession and Declaration be recorded in Her Majesty's College of Arms.'

Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, being born the son of Duke, was born Lord Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor as a legal entity. His sister, expected in the summer, will be born Lady [Christian name] Mountbatten-Windsor.

The Queen, Head of the Royal House of Windsor, declared by Letters Patent in 1960 that her male line descendants who were not Royal Highnesses or princes or princesses would have the surname Mountbatten-Windsor, to complement her husband, Prince Philip, who had assumed the surname of Mountbatten when he was naturalized a British subject in 1947.

Harry and Meghan's children now share this surname with the children of the Earl and Countess of Wessex, who, as children of the Sovereign's son are officially HRH, but do not use the royal style and title. Instead Edward and Sophie's children use courtesy titles derived from their father's peerages, and are known as Viscount Severn and Lady Louise Windsor.

Several peers, or relatives of peers with courtesy titles, do decide not to be so styled. And of course peerages can be disclaimed, within a time limit, under the terms of the Peerages Act 1963. Peers in the Peerage of Ireland and baronets cannot disclaim under the terms of the act. However, a man or woman who has been created a peer, as Harry was in 2018, cannot then go on to disclaim.

The younger children of dukes and marquesses are prefixed 'Lord' or 'Lady'. The younger sons of Earls, Viscounts and Barons are prefixed 'The Honourable'. Daughters of Earls are 'Lady', and the daughters of Viscounts and Barons are 'The Honourable'.

The fifth grandchild of the Prince of Wales, due in the early summer, will be eighth in line of succession to the throne, and will follow her grandfather, Charles, then the Duke of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis and then her father, the Duke of Sussex, and elder brother Archie, in the line of succession.

The infant will be the eleventh great-grandchild of the Queen, and will not be born a prince or princess with the qualification of Royal Highness. That rank is reserved only for the children and male line grandchildren of the Sovereign, and the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales, as laid down by the Letters Patent of King George V [1917], and the further Letters Patent of Queen Elizabeth II [2012].

Under the terms of the Letters Patent creating Harry's dukedom, in May, 2018, the descent of the title is vested in his heirs male 'lawfully begotten'. Archie is destined, should he survive his father, to succeed as 2nd Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel. Harry and Meghan's daughter will of course be in the line of succession to the throne, but she will not be in remainder to the dukedom, earldom or barony.

Greaves' concerns were later shown to be legitimate when it transpired that the Lordship of the Forest of Pendle belongs to the Barons Clitheroe and forms part of the Honor of Clitheroe holdings they have held since World War II. Its sale was invalid and had not been authorised by its owners.

The 7th Marquess of Bute 1958-2021

_. The 7th Marquess of Bute died 22 March, 2021, after a short illness at the age of 62. He was head of Scotland's most prominent Roman Catholic dynasty.

The peer spent much of his time on his namesake Scottish island at his ancestral home, Mount Stuart, on the Isle of Bute, and had chaired the Board of Mount Stuart Trust since 2005. The 7th Marquess, once ranked 616th in the Rich List, was also a Formula 1 driver in 1986 as he partnered Ayrton Senna and raced under the name 'Johnny Dumfries'. During his racing career he also won the 24-hour race, Le Mans, in 1988.

Mount Stuart, the family’s ancestral Victorian gothic palace on the Isle of Bute that he inherited in 1993 along with the 18th-century Dumfries House in southwest Scotland. As though to emphasise the point, he preferred to live in Ladbroke Grove, west London.

The marquisate had been created in 1794 for the 4th Earl of Bute, whose father, John Stuart, the 3rd Earl, was George III’s despotic prime minister for 11 months in 1762-63. The first marquess served as ambassador to Spain; the second built Cardiff docks and owned substantial oil and coal plants in the region; and the third scandalised Victorian society by converting to Catholicism, restoring Cardiff Castle and building the eccentric Castle Coch in south Wales.

He inherited not only the title but also an estate worth an estimated £144 million, including 25,000 acres of Scotland — as well as a £12 million overdraft. He dropped the Johnny Dumfries name, preferring to be known as John Bute.

The Marquess, a friend of the Prince of Wales, is believed to have died of cancer. The Crichton-Stuarts owned Dumfries House, having been inherited by the 2nd Marquess of Bute in 1814, it remained in his family until 2007 when the 7th Marquess sold it to the nation for £45 million due to the cost of upkeep.

The Marquess was descended from Mary Tudor, daughter of King Henry VII, and her husband, Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk.

The Marquess of Bute [created in the Peerage of Gt Britain, 1796], was also 12th Earl of Dumfries [in the Peerage of Scotland, cr 1633], 10th Earl of Bute [Peerage of Scotland cr 1703], 7th Earl of Windsor [Peerage of Gt Britain cr 1796], 12th Viscount of Ayr [Peerage of Scotland, cr 1622], 10th Viscount Kingarth [Peerage of Scotland cr 1703], 7th Viscount Mountjoy [Peerage of Gt Britain, cr 1796], 20th Lord Crichton of Sanquhar [Peerage of Scotland cr 1487], 12th Lord Sanquhar [Peerage of Scotland cr 1622], 12th Lord Crichton of Sanquhar & Cumnock, [cr Peerage of Scotland 1633], 10th Lord Mount Stuart, Cumra and Inchmarnock [Peerage of Scotland cr 1703], 8th Baron Mount Stuart of Wortley [Peerage of Gt Britain, cr 1761], 7th Baron Cardiff [Peerage of Gt Britain, cr 1776], 12th Baronet, of Bute [Nova Scotia creation, 1627], Hereditary Keeper of Rothesay Castle, and Hereditary Sheriff and Coroner of Bute.

John Colum Crichton-Stuart was born in a cottage hospital on the Isle of Bute, 26 April, 1958, son of the 6th Marquess of Bute, KBE [1933-93], and his first wife the former [Beatrice] Nicola Grace Weld-Forester [born 19 Nov, 1933], scion of the Barons Forester. He was put in the care of Helen Lightbody, former nanny to Prince Charles and Princess Anne.

He succeeded his father, 21 July, 1993, as 7th Marquess.

The Marquess of Bute married firsly, 1984 [div 1993], Carolyn Waddell, daughter of Bryson Waddell; married secondly, 13 Feb, 1999, Serena Solitaire Wendell, daughter of Maj Jac Wendell [later Maxwell-Hyslop], and his wife the former Anthea Petronelle Hyslop, only dau of Maj Hugh John Maxwell Hyslop, of that landed gentry family.

He leaves a son, John, and two daughters, Lady Caroline Crichton-Stuart [born 1984], and Lady Cathleen Crichton-Stuart [born 1986], from his first marriage, and a daughter, Lady Lola Affrica Crichton-Stuart [born 1999], from his second marriage.

The son, John Bryson Crichton-Stuart, styled Lord Mount Stuart [born 21 December, 1989], now succeeds as 8th Marquess of Bute.

Scrope/Staveley engagement

_. The engagement was announced 20 March, 2021, between [Simon] Harry Richard Scrope [born 1974], head of the landed gentry family of Scrope of Danby, only son of the late Simon Egerton Scrope [1934-2010], of Danby on Yore, and his wife the former Jennifer Jane Parkinson, descended from the extinct Barons Bingley, & Rosanna Lorna Staveley [born 1988], scion of the Staveley landed gentry family, daughter of the late Simon Henry Staveley [1949-98], and his wife the former Judy O. Willis Fleming [b 28 June, 1954], scion of that landed gentry family, of Willis Fleming, of Stoneham.

Harry Scrope is a grandson maternally of the late Sir Kenneth Parkinson, Kt [1908-81], sometime chairman of Yorkshire Post Newspapers, and his wife the former Hon Dorothy Lane Fox [1909-80], a daughter of the 1st and last Baron Bingley [1870-1947].

The Scrope/Staveley engagement is the second engagement between members of these old families to have taken place this year. In February Harry Scrope's cousin, Edward Scrope [born in 1989], announced his engagement to Rosanna Staveley's cousin, Miranda Staveley [born 1988].

The Scrope family (pronounced "Scroop") are seated at Danby, the family's 1,500-acre estate in North Yorkshire. The family descend from one of Edward the Confessor's Norman favourites, and were thus already settled in England at the time of the Conquest. The family motto, Devant si je puis (Forward if I am able), is a sardonic allusion to their name, which means "crab" in the Norman dialect. Establishing themselves in Wensleydale in the 12th century, Scropes distinguished themselves on the Crusades and in the Hundred Years War, were regularly summoned to medieval parliaments as barons, and have produced five Garter knights, and an Archbishop of York.

The Scrope coat of arms, Azure a bend or, was one of the earliest to be adopted and, to amateurs of heraldry, is a celebrated curiosity. Campaigning in Scotland in 1385, Richard, Lord Scrope of Bolton, was aghast to see it borne by a fellow knight, Sir Richard le Grosvenor. The matter was tried in the Court of Chivalry – John of Gaunt, Harry "Hotspur" and Geoffrey Chaucer all giving evidence on Scrope's behalf.

Depositions were conveniently heard in York Minster, the family burial place, where the Scrope arms were prominently on display, as they were – in glass, alabaster and stone – in more than 40 other churches in Yorkshire. The court's decision in favour of Scrope has long rankled with the Grosvenors. Hugh Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster, was to name his famous racehorse (the 1880 Derby winner) Bend Or, and it was also his nickname for his grandson, the 2nd Duke, whose chestnut hair reminded him of the horse. For their part, the proud Scropes sport a distinctive family tie, based on their arms, of blue with diagonal gold stripes.

Harry Scrope descends from a junior branch of the family which succeeded to the headship in 1630. Christopher Scrope was by that time a convicted recusant and knew better than to press his claim to the titles and estates. Christopher's son seated himself at Danby-on-Yore, in the heart of the Scrope country, which the family had acquired through an heiress in 1576. Largely rebuilt in the 16th century, Danby Hall incorporates one of the most southerly examples of a peel tower, dating from the early 14th century. A small chamber at the top of the "old Tower" served as a chapel, the only place of Catholic worship for miles around. In the early 1800s a capacious priest's hole was rediscovered at the back of a fireplace. Generations of Scropes were barred, as Catholics, from public office. Their sons were sent abroad, with false identities, for their schooling. Forbidden to own any horse worth more than £5, they depended on kindly Protestant neighbours to hold them in their own names. The Scrope who bred Danby Cade, a famous 18th-century racehorse, was not his legal owner. "Penal times" ended with the passing of the Catholic Relief Act in 1829. Scrope of Danby petitioned in vain for the earldom of Wiltshire, but retained the heraldic supporters (a pair of Cornish choughs) that the family claim by prescription – supporters being an honour usually afforded only to peers and knights grand cross under Royal Warrant.

Rosanna Staveley is a granddaughter of Capt [William Arthur] Miles Staveley [1913-81], scion of the Staveleys of North Stainley Hall, Ripon, and his wife the former Nancy Constance Cail [1914-2007].

Carolyn Jane Gerard Benson 1947-2021

_. Carolyn Benson, who died 7 March, 2021, aged 73, was a life-long friend and confidante of the Duchess of Cornwall, and scion of the Leslie baronets.

Carolyn was a friend of Camilla Shand from their schooldays together. Always known as 'Chubby', she remained a firm friend of the Duchess of Cornwall. The ladies regularly took foreign holidays together.

She was born in 1947, as Carolyn Jane Gerard Leigh, the elder daughter of Colonel [William Henry] Gerard Leigh, CVO, CBE [1915-2008], late the Life Guards, of Hayes, East Woodhay, Newbury, Berkshire, and his wife the former Nancy Jean Leslie [1923-2012], daughter of Sir Norman Leslie, CMG, CBE, 8th Baronet [1889-1937].

Carolyn's father, Col. Gerard Leigh, was a polo playing chum of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and vice-president of The Guards' Polo Club. Prince Philip was a godfather at the christening of her brother, David, in 1958. Col. Gerard Leigh was a Gentleman Usher to HM The Queen.

Carolyn's mother, Jean, was the woman whose photograph was used to help trick the Germans into falling for one of the greatest deceptions of the Second World War.

Operation Mincemeat, which was to inspire a film called The Man Who Never Was in the 1950s, was devised in the spring of 1943 by two intelligence officers, Charles Cholmondeley of MI5 and Commander Ewen Montagu of Naval Intelligence. With Churchill planning to invade Italy through Sicily, a ruse was required to make the Germans believe that the attack would take place elsewhere.

Cholmondeley and Montagu devised the idea of planting false papers on an “officer” and making it look as if he had died in a plane crash at sea. Through the London coroner, they obtained the body of Glyndwr Michael, a down-and-out who had killed himself by drinking rat poison. The body was kept in cold storage while the plotters devised a cover story.

The body was given military papers, including a pass to Combined Operations Headquarters, identifying him as Acting Major William Martin, an expert in amphibious warfare. To make it as convincing as possible, there was also a letter from his father, a warning about his overdraft from his bank manager, a bill for an engagement ring, love letters — and a fetching snapshot of his fiancée, “Pam”, emerging from the Thames in a one-piece swimsuit.

“Martin” was dressed in the uniform of a Royal Marines officer and the personal effects were put in a briefcase – chained to his wrist – with “plans” showing that the Allies intended to invade Italy via Sardinia and Greece. On April 30 1943 “Major Martin” was slipped into the sea from a submarine off Huelva, south-west Spain, along with an upturned life raft. The body was picked up by a fisherman and the contents of the briefcase soon found their way to the Abwehr in Madrid.

The deception worked better than anyone had expected. German troops were redeployed to Greece and Sardinia, while Sicily was left thinly defended. A triumphant telegram was sent to Churchill: “Mincemeat swallowed rod, line and sinker.”

The “Pam” of the photograph was in reality Jean Gerard Leigh (or Jean Leslie as she then was), a young MI5 clerk. But as Ben Macintyre revealed in his recent book Operation Mincemeat (2010), the deception involved her for a short time in a bizarre game of role-playing which had little to do with the main business of bamboozling the Germans.

She first got caught up in the plot in February 1943, when the hunt began for a suitable “mate” for “Major Martin”. The more attractive girls in MI5 and Naval Intelligence were asked to supply photographs, and Ewen Montagu, who had already noticed the pretty 19-year old with wavy brown hair, asked Jean if she would oblige. She duly became “Pam”, “Bill Martin’s fiancée”, a young woman working in a government office whom the major had met five weeks earlier and proposed to after a whirlwind romance. The job of drafting Pam’s breathless billets doux was given to another woman in the department.

But Jean Leslie soon found that her duties went beyond the mere provision of a photograph. Montagu, whose wife Iris was sitting out the war with their children in America, decided to live the part of Major Martin: “He was Willie and I was Pam. He had the sort of mind that worked that way,” Jean recalled. Clearly smitten, he began to court her, taking her out to clubs, films and dinner and writing her love letters signed “Bill”. “Pam” enjoyed the make-believe, sending him a copy of the swimsuit photograph inscribed “till death us do part. Your loving Pam”. At “Bill Martin’s farewell party” at the Gargoyle Club, she turned up on Montagu’s arm.

When the engagement of Pam and Bill came to its inevitable end, so too did the “romance” between Montagu and Jean Leslie. Montagu later told his wife, who had been puzzled by the photograph of the attractive girl on her husband’s dressing table, that it had all been play-acting — part of a secret wartime operation. As Macintyre observes: “He may have been telling the truth.” Montagu certainly had an eye for her, but according to Jean Leslie’s family this was not reciprocated and no liaison took place.

Nancy Jean Leslie was born on November 20 1923 at Andover, Hampshire, the daughter of Sir Norman Leslie, Bt, a director of Cable & Wireless, and Betty Sewell. She had no formal education, and her recruitment into MI5 remains something of a mystery. A clue, perhaps, was her mastery of French, which she spoke like a native (even though she could not write a word of it) — on the death of her father, when she was just 13, her mother had taken her to live in Paris. When Paris fell to the Germans in 1940, the 17-year-old Jean fled to Brittany, where she used her guile, charm and looks to secure passage on a boat back to England.

In 1941, aged 18, she was recruited into the counter-intelligence and double agent section of MI5. Her job was to sift through reports from Camp 020, the wartime internment centre at Ham, Surrey, where enemy spies were interrogated, and bring anything of interest to the notice of her senior colleagues.

In November 1946, after a brief courtship, she married Colonel William Gerard Leigh at St George’s Chapel, Hanover Square, with a reception at Claridge’s. Gerard Leigh was an officer in the Life Guards and a fine horseman, who, as chairman of the Guards Polo Club, would make headlines for saving the Queen from a flying polo ball in 1971.

The pair enjoyed an evening cocktail and travelled everywhere together with a concoction kit for vodka martinis. Even in hotel rooms, the mini bar was rarely touched; and when staying with friends they preferred to mix their own cocktails in their room before dining.

After the war she spent time with her husband in Palestine, and later in Germany. Back in Britain, Jean Gerard Leigh involved herself in charitable work, particularly for the Docklands Settlement charity and the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital in central London. A gifted gardener, with a lightning recall for the Latin names of plants, she kept a series of beautiful gardens in Berkshire.

Ewen Montagu, meanwhile, continued to keep in touch with Jean from time to time. In 1951, before the publication of his authorised account of Operation Mincemeat, he wrote to Jean Gerard Leigh (“or should it be Pam?”) asking for her permission to use the swimsuit photograph, assuring her that she would be identified only as “a girl working in my section”.

Jean was not entirely happy: “I am most interested to hear that parts of your and Bill’s doubtful past are to be revealed to the unsuspecting public”, she replied. “But what should be my answer if someone sees through the ravages of time and identifies me with Pam?” Montagu suggested that if anyone made the connection, she should “merely say that you were working in a branch of the War Office”.

In 1980 when a photograph of Jean appeared in The Times after her husband was appointed CBE, the 79-year-old Montagu wrote another letter: “Dear Pam, It was a voice from the past to see you in today’s papers and I can’t resist being another such voice and sending you congratulations. Ever yours, Ewen (alias Major William Martin).”

But it was not until 1996 that Jean Gerard Leigh admitted publicly that she and “Pam” were one and the same. She came forward after The Daily Telegraph reported the true identity of the body used in Operation Mincemeat; it had been identified following years of painstaking research by Roger Morgan, a local council officer.

Carolyn Gerard Leigh married in 1977, as his second wife, Charles Edward Riou Benson [1935-2002], sometime racing correspondent of the Daily Express [under the nom de plume 'Bendex'], & scion of that landed gentry family, son of Stephen Riou Benson, and his wife the former Phyllis Hawkins. Her husband, who died 12 July, 2002, aged 66, was a famed racing tipster, socialite and gambler. She is survived by a daughter, Honor May Benson [who was born in 1980].
