Eliza Lily Clowes (born 2024)

 Olivia Sasha Clowes (nee Shephard, born 1991), wife of Toby Harry Somerset Clowes (born 1990), gave birth to a daughter, Eliza Lily, 25 January, 2024, a sister for Freddie John Somerset, who was born 18 April, 2022.

Toby Clowes is a son of George Mark Somerset Clowes (born 1954) of West Woodhay, Berkshire, by his wife the former Lady Rose Nevill (born 1950).

Olivia Clowes is a daughter of Miles J Shephard (born 1962) of Kingston upon Thames, by his wife the former Alexandra M Stringer (born 1963).

Toby Clowes is a grandson maternally of the 5th Marquess of Abergavenny, KG (1914-2000) and of Patricia Marchioness of Abergavenny, DCVO (1915-2005), Lady of the Bedchamber to HM Queen Elizabeth II.

John Richard Purey-Cust 1934-2024

 John Richard Purey-Cust, who died 23 January, 2024, at Gore, New Zealand, aged 89, was a scion of the Barons Brownlow, and was heir presumptive to his kinsman, the 8th Baron.

He was born 30 June, 1934, son of Brigadier Richard Brownlow Purey-Cust, CBE, DSO, MC (1888-1958), and his wife the former  Gertrude Patricia Zoë Birch (who died in 1993), and was educated at Eton, & was a forester, whose home for many years was at Gore, New Zealand. He was unmarried.

From 2021 he was heir presumptive to his kinsman, the 8th Baron Brownlow (born 9 July, 1974).

From her first marriage she had a son, Jeremy (1964-1982), and a daughter, Miranda (born 6 Jan, 1963), and from her second marriage she leaves a son, Shaun (born 9 July, 1969).

 Lord Tomlinson, a Labour Co-operative politician life peer, died 20 January, 2024, aged 84.

John Edward Tomlinson was born 1 Aug, 1939, and was Labour MP for Meriden, 1974-79; and MEP for Birmingham West 1974-99; and was PPS to the Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, 1975-76; Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 1976-79; Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Overseas Development 1977-79; and created a life peer in 1998, as Baron Tomlinson, of Walsall in the County of West Midlands.

 Lady Harvie-Watt (née de Chollet), who died 18 January, 2024, aged 83, was the wife of Sir James Harvie-Watt, 2nd Baronet.

The former Roseline Gladys Virginia de Chollet, daughter of Baron Louis de Chollet, of Switzerland, and his wife Frances Winslow Parker, of Boston, United States, married 28 May, 1966, James Harvie-Watt (born 25 Aug, 1940), son of Sir George Steven Harvie-Watt, 1st Baronet, QC, TD, DL (1903-1989), and his wife Jane Elizabeth Taylor (1908-2003). Her husband succeeded to the baronetcy in 1989.

Lady Harvie-Watt leaves issue, a son, Mark Louis (born 19 Aug 1969), and a daughter, Isabelle Frances (born 19 March, 1967).

Alexandra Kate (Ali) Alliott (née Fortescue, born 1991), wife of (Richard) Frederick C. Alliott [born 1991], and scion of the Earls Fortescue, gave birth to a son, John Seymour, 19 December, 2023.

Frederick Alliott is a son of George B. Alliott [born 1958], of Aldbury, Hertfordshire, by his wife the former Catherine M. Coles [born 1959].

Ali Fortescue is a daughter of the Hon Seymour Henry Fortescue [born 1942], of Canonbridge, co Hereford, by his second wife the former Jennifer Ann Simon [born 1954].

Ali's half sister is Her Serene Highness the Hereditary Princess zu Bentheim-Tecklenburg. Alexandra is a cousin of the 8th Earl Fortescue.

The Baron Bhatia, OBE 1932-2024

Lord Bhatia, OBE, life baron, died 12 January, 2024, aged 91, was an Ismaili Muslim businessman born in East Africa who was ennobled in recognition of his charitable work since arriving in Britain in 1972. Appointed one of Tony Blair’s “people’s peers” in 2001, Amir Bhatia derived much of his influence from chairing the UK arm of Industrial Promotion Services, the Geneva-based conglomerate managing the Aga Khan’s global business empire.

Appointed OBE in 1997, and created a life peer in 2001 as Baron Bhatia of Hampton in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. In October 2010, Lord Bhatia was suspended from the House of Lords for eight months due to the United Kingdom parliamentary expenses scandal.] After that, he sat in the Lords as a non-affiliated member. In December 2013, BBC Newsnight reported that Lord Bhatia had been accused by the Ethnic Minority Foundation of misappropriating £600,000 from the charity. Lord Bhatia was suing the charity for unfair dismissal, and his lawyers said that the allegations were confusing the historical position with the present dispute.

Amirali Alibhai Bhatia was born 18 March, 1932.

 Lady Harriot Tennant, MBE, sometime chairman of Chelsea Physic Garden, scion of the Earls of Radnor, died 5 January, 2024, aged 88.

Harriot Pleydell-Bouverie was born 18 December, 1935, fourth daughter of the 7th Earl of Radnor, KG, KCO (1895-1968), of Longford Castke, Salisbury, and his wife the former Helena Olivia Adeane (1902-1985), scion of that landed gentry family; and married 11 December, 1965, Mark Iain Tennant of Balfluig (1932-2020), of Balfluig Castle, Aberdeen, scion of the Barons Glenconner, son of Major John Tennant (1899-1967), and his first wife the Hon Antonia Mary Roby Benson (1903-1977), daughter of the 1st Baron Charnwood (1864-1945); by whom she had issue, a son, Lysander (born 1968), and a daughter, Sophia (born 1967).

The Dowager Duchess of Rutland 1937-2024

 The Dowager Duchess of Rutland, who died 21 January, 2024, aged 86, was the second wife and widow of the 10th Duke of Rutland, mother of the 11th Duke, and daughter of Margaret, Duchess of Argyll.

She was for forty years the chatelaine of Belvoir Castle, Rutland.

She was born 19 June, 1937 at Frances Helen Sweeny, daughter of Charles Francis Sweeny (1909-1993), the American golfer and socialite, and his 1st wife (Ethel) Margaret Whigham (1912-1993), the Scottish debutante, who after her divorce from Sweeny married secondly, 22 March, 1951, as his third wife, the 11th Duke of Argyll (1903-1973), and went through a scandalous divorce from the peer in 1963.

Frances Sweeny, a beautiful debutante in the 1950s married 15 May, 1958, as his second wife, Charles John Robert Manners, the 10th Duke of Rutland, CBE (1919-1999), of Belvoir Castle, Rutland, by whom she issue three sons, David Charles Robert, the 11th Duke (born 8 May, 1959), Lord Robert George Manners (1961-1964), and Lord Edward John Manners (born 29 May, 1965), and a daughter, Lady Helen Theresa Margaret Manners (born 11 November, 1962).

She was widowed 2 January, 1999, and took the style Dowager Duchess of Rutland.

Her grandchildren include the socialites Lady Violet, Lady Alice and Lady Eliza Manners, Charles, styled Marquis of Granby, and Lord Hugo Manners, twins Ivor and Warwick Chipman, and twins Ivo and Vesey Manners.

Capt Michael Charles Gordon Lennox, RN 1938-2024

 Capt Michael Charles Gordon Lennox, OBE, RN, who died 10 January, 2024, aged 85, was a scion of the Dukes of Richmond and Gordon, a descendant of the 7th Duke.

He was born 30 September, 1938, 1st son of Rear-Admiral Sir Alexander Henry Charles Gordon Lennox, KCVO, CB, DSO (1911-1987), and his wife the former Barbara Steele (1913-87); and married 1974, Jennifer Susan (Jenny) Gibbs (born 12 May, 1944), scion of the Barons Aldenham, daughter of Capt the Hon Vicary Paul Gibbs (1921-1944), and his wife Jean Frances Hambro (1923-2017) (she married 2ndly in 1946, Rev the Hon Andrew Charles Victor Elphinstone (1918-1975), a first cousin of HM Queen Elizabeth II).

His wife, Dame Jennifer Susan Gordon Lennox, DCVO, was a Woman of the Bedchamber to HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and later to HM Queen Elizabeth II, and was appointed CVO, and advanced to DCVO in the honours list following the demise of the late Queen.

Capt Gordon Lennox leaves issue, a son Hamish Charles (born 11 June, 1980), and two daughters, Lucinda Jean (born 19 Sept, 1975), and Charlotte Louise (born 18 Sept, 1978).

   Zoë Mary Copley [nee Manners, born 14 November, 1989], wife of Jack Copley [born 1989], gave birth to a son, Kit Thomas Charles, 8 January, 2024, a brother for Martha Florence Sarah, who was born 6 June, 2021.

Jack A.T. Copley is a son of Robert Copley, of London, descended from the Earls of Loudoun, and Mrs Diana Copley (nee Wingfield), of Great Barrington, Gloucestershire, a scion of the Viscounts Powerscourt.

 Zoë Copley is a scion of the Barons Manners, eldest daughter of Charles Henry Manners (born 1957), of Woodend, Gloucestershire, by his wife the former Nichola Thompson, and is descended from the 1st Baron Manners, a Solicitor General & Lord Chancellor of Ireland, who was a grandson of the 3rd Duke of Rutland.

The 15th Baron Saye & Sele 1920-2024

 The 15th (or 21st) Baron Saye & Sele, who died 20 January, 2024, aged 103, was a land agent who devoted much of his energy to restoring and maintaining Broughton Castle, the beautiful moated medieval mansion near Banbury, Oxfordshire which had been in his family since 1377.

The custodian of Broughton Castle and one of the first soldiers to enter Belsen concentration camp at the end of the Second World War.

The peer served as a major, Rifle Brigade 1941-49; and was a Trustee, Ernest Cook Trust 1960-95 and Chairman of the Trustees 1965-92; he assumed the surname Fiennes in lieu of that of Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes by deed poll 1965; he was a Fellow of Winchester College 1967-83; and served as Deputy Lieutenant, Oxfordshire from 1979; he was a chartered surveyor, &c.

Nathaniel Thomas Allen Fiennes (previously Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes) was born 22 September, 1920, the son of the 14th Baron Saye & Sele, OBE, MC, DL (1885-1968), and his wife the former Hersey Cecilia Hester Butler (who died 31 Oct, 1968); and succeeded as 15th Baron (created E, 1603) on his father's death, 21 October, 1968.

His mother was the daughter of Sir Thomas Butler, Yeoman Usher of the Black Rod. Nathaniel Fiennes was born in his grandfather’s grace-and-favour apartment in the Victoria Tower of the House of Lords, making him – perhaps uniquely – a Lord born in the Lords. 

He married 4 December, 1958, Mariette Helena Salisbury-Jones, DL, the only daughter of Major General Sir (Arthur) Guy Salisbury-Jones GCVO CMG CBE MC, of Mill Down, Hambledon, co. Hampshire, by his wife Hilda Violet Helena de Bunsen, dau. of Rt Hon Sir Maurice William Ernest de Bunsen, 1st Bt. GCMG GCVO CB, by whom he had issue, four sons, Richard, Martin, Thomas and William, and a daughter, Susannah, the artist. His eldest son, the Hon Richard Fiennes predeceased him 13 Apr, 2001. The second son, the Hon Martin Guy Fiennes (born 27 Feb, 1961), succeeds as 16th Baron Saye & Sele, and custodian of Broughton Castle, Banbury.

Frederick Peter Riou Prior (born 2023)

 Isabel Maria Prior (born 1991, nee Boycott), wife of Oliver James Leathes Prior [born 1991], gave birth to a son, Frederick Peter Riou, 27 December, 2023.

Oliver is a son of the Hon Jeremy James Leathes Prior [born 1962], of Wissett, Suffolk, by his wife the former Camila Sarah Benson [born 1963], scion of that landed gentry family, and is a grandson of the late life peer, the Baron Prior, PC [1927-2016].

Isabel is a daughter of the late Peter Boycott and of Mrs Peter Boycott, of Swalcliffe, co Oxford.

The 21st Baron Trimlestown 1930-2024

 Lord Trimlestown, who died 10 January, 2024, aged 93, was the 21st Baron in the Peerage of Ireland created in 1461.

Raymond Charles Barnewall was born 29 December, 1930, the second son of the 19th Baron Trimlestown (1899-1990), and his wife the former Muriel Schneider (1894-1937); and succeeded to the barony on the demise of his elder brother, Anthony, the 20th Baron, 19 August, 1997.  The peerage was created in 1461 for his ancestor Robert Barnewall, a supporter of Richard, Duke of York, who knighted him. He served on the Council of Ireland from 1461.

Lord Trimlestown survived his sister, the Hon Diana Birtwistle, by only two weeks. She died on Boxing Day 2023.

Lord Trimlestown, of Chiddingfold, Surrey, was unmarried, and the ancient peerage now becomes extinct, or dormant. There is no obvious heir presumptive, but a successor may be found amongst the descendants, if any, of Thomas Barnewall, of Bloomsbury, London, a cousin of the 17th and 18th Barons Trimlestown.

She was born Belinda Jane Elizabeth Cuthbert, 6 Aug, 1932, elder daughter of Major Harold David Cuthbert (1909-1959), head of that Northumberland family, and his 1st wife the former Bridget Sibyl Milnes Coates (1910-2010), scion of the Milnes Coates baronets;  and married 13 Oct, 1973, as his second wife, the Hon Matthew Henry Beaumont (1933-2017), fourth son of the 2nd Viscount Allendale, KG, CB, OBE, MC. DL (1890-1956), and his wife the former Violet Lucy Emily Seely (1897-1979), scion of the Seely baronets. No issue of the union.

Priscilla Smith (née Bagot), who died 12 January, 2024, aged 84, was a descendant of the Barons Bagot.

She was born in 1939, the eldest daughter of Oliver Robin Bagot (who was born Gaskell, scion of that landed gentry family) (1914-2000), and his wife the former Annette Dorothy Stephens (1917-2003); and married 1stly, 17 September, 1960 (div 1964), Edward Humphry Tyrrell Wakefield (born 11 July, 1936) (later Sir Edward Wakefield, 2nd Baronet), son of Sir Edward Wakefield, 1st Bt (1903-1969), and his wife the former Constance Lalage Perronet Thompson (1906-2001); married 2ndly, 1967, Erik George Sebastian Smith (1931-2004). She leaves two daughters from her second marriage, Miranda and Susan.

Sir John Ernest Michael Conant, 2nd Baronet 1923-2024

 Sir John Conant, 2nd Baronet, landowner and farmer, died 10 January, 2024, aged 100. 

Educated at Eton and Corpus Christie College, Cambridge (BA in agriculture); he served in the Grenadier Guards 1942-45; at CCC Cambridge 1946-49; he farmed in Rutland from 1950, and was High Sheriff of Rutland in 1960. His home was near Oakham in Rutland.

He was born 24 April, 1923, son of Sir Roger John Edward Conant, 1st Baronet, CVO (1899-1973), and his wife the former Daphne Lorraine Learoyd (1898-1976); and succeeded to the baronetcy (cr 1954), on his father's demise, 1973.

He married firstly, 16 September, 1950, Periwinkle Elizabeth Thorp (1929-1985), daughter of Dudley Barker Thorp (1880-1950), of Kimbolton, Huntingdonshire, and his wife the former Doris Thorp (1889-1969); married 2ndly, 1992, Mrs (Mary) Clare Attwater, younger daughter of William E. Madden, of Petersfield, Hampshire.

He leaves issue from his first marriage, two sons, Simon and William, and two daughters, Fiona and Melanie, from his first marriage (and one son deceased). His eldest surviving son, Simon Edward Christopher Conant (born 13 Oct, 1958), succeeds as 3rd baronet.

He was born 5 September, 1935, son of Major John Windham Meade (1894-1984), and the former Grace Dorothea de Salis (1902-1977), scion of that landed gentry family; and married 23 January, 1967, Princess Valentina Nikolaevna (Valentine) Galitzine (born 8 January, 1932), daughter of Prince Nikolai Emanuelevich Galitzine (1879-1958), and his wife Countess Irena Dimitrievna Tatistchev (1900-1983), by whom he had issue, a son, Nicholas (born 20 Nov, 1969), and three daughters, Tatiana (Tania) (born 3 Feb, 1968), Catherine (twin, born 3 Feb, 1968) and Elizabeth (born 1971).

His daughter, Tatiana, married in 1994, her kinsman Prince Andrei Mikhailovitch Galitzine.

Robin Arthur Elidyr Herbert, CBE 1934-2024

Robin Arthur Elidyr Herbert, CBE, who died 12 January, 2024, was a president of the Royal Horticultural Society.

His home was at Llanover is set in the Usk Valley beneath the Black Mountains in Monmouthshire, South Wales. The 18-acre Grade II listed garden, set within a beautiful park, features a walled Round Garden, two Arboreta and extensive herbaceous  borders and lawns. The Rhyd-y-Meirch (Ford of the Stallions) stream flows the entire length of the garden, tumbling into ponds, over cascades and beneath flagstone bridges.  Llanover Garden was established in the late 18th century by Benjamin Waddington, Robin Herbert's great-great-great-grandfather. 

He was born in 1934, scion of that landed gentry family, son of Lieutenant-Colonel Sir John Arthur Herbert, GCIE (1895-1943), and his wife the former Lady Mary Theresa Fox-Strangways (1903-1948), daughter of the 6th Earl of Ilchester, GBE (1874-1959). He married firstly, 1960 (div 1988), Margaret Griswold Lewis, daughter of the Hon Geoffrey Whitney Lewis (1910-92), and his wife the former Elizabeth Merrill Locke (1914-2009); & married secondly, in 1988, Philippa King.

From his first marriage he leaves issue, two sons, Benjamin (born 1963), and Richard (born 1969), and two daughters, (Helen) Elizabeth (born 1962), and Susannah Mary (born 1966).

His daughter, Elizabeth Murray, is now chatelaine of Llanover.

Colonel the Hon Peter NantonTrustram Eve, OBE, Royal Green Jackets (Rifle Brigade), who died 30 December, 2023, aged 93, was a scion of the Barons Silsoe, and heir presumptive to his nephew, the 3rd Baron.

He was educated at Oxford University, MA 1960); and was commissioned  into the Royal Green Jackets, Lieutenant-Colonel, 1973; OBE (1978). 

He was born 2 May, 1930, second son of the 1st Baron Silsoe, GBE, MC (1894-1976), who was appointed chairman of the War Damage Commission (1941), and the War Works Commission (1945), Local Government Boundary Commission (1945) and Central Land Board (1947), &c, by his wife the former Marguerite Meredith Nanton (1900-1945).

He married 29 April, 1961, Petronilla Letiere Sheldon Elliott (1928-2023), daughter of Jannion Steele Elliott (who died 1942), of Dowles Manor, Bewdley, Yorkshire, by his wife the former Doris Amie Sheldon (1889-1974). His wife died 1 March, 2023, aged 94.

Colonel Trustram Eve leaves issue, two sons, Richard (born 9 March, 1963), and Nicholas (born 14 November, 1965).

Lord Kenyon, the 7th Baron, in the Peerage of Great Britain (cr 1788), died 27 December, 2023. He was 51.

Lloyd Nicholas Tyrell-Kenyon was born 9 April, 1972, the elder son of the 6th Baron Kenyon (1947-2019), of Gredington, Whitchurch, co Salop, and his wife the former Sally Carolyn Matthews, daughter of Jack Frank Page Matthews, of Bury St Edmunds, co Suffolk.

He succeeded his father, 17 August, 2019, as 7th Baron Kenyon (Peerage of GB, cr 1788), and seventh Baronet (of Gredington, cr GB 1784). 

Lord Kenyon was unmarried and the peerage and baronetcy now pass to his younger brother, the Hon Alexander Simon Tyrell-Kenyon, who was born 29 November, 1975.

The baronet was President of the North-West Regional Liberal Party, 1970-71, and author of A Wealth of Happiness and Many Bitter Trials, published in 1992.

Joseph Gurney Pease was born  16 November, 1927, son of Sir Alfred Edward Pease, 2nd Baronet (1857-1939), and his third wife the former Emily Elizabeth Smith (1897-1979), and was a half-brrother of Sir Edward Pease, 3rd Bt (1880-1963), and brother of Sir Alfred Pease, 4th Bt (1926-2008), and succeeded to the baronetcy, 23 September, 2008.

He married 24 June, 1953, Shelagh Munro Bulman, daughter of Cyril Gounod Bulman (1898-1977), of Great Langdale, Ambleside, and his wife Sarah Jane Armstrong (1897-1983); by whom he had issue, a son, Charles Edward Gurney Pease (born 17 July, 1955), and a daughter, Jane Elizabeth Gurney Pease (born 15 June, 1957). The Hon James Ogilvy, who died 3 January, 2024, aged 89, was a scion of the Earls of Airlie, and a younger brother of the late Hon Sir Angus Ogilvy, KCVO.

Jonathan Hiatt Nicolson Dermot Irwin was born 21 June, 1941, the only child of John Irwin, an actor, and the actress Philippa Hiatt (1918-2016); and married 1stly, in Feb 1964 (div 1989), the Hon Mikaela Rawlinson (born 1941), daughter of the life peer the Baron Rawlinson of Ewell, PC, QC (1919-2006), the barrister and Conservative politician, by his 1st wife the former Haidee Kavanagh; he married 2ndly, in 1991, Mary Ann O'Brien, from a racing family, daughter of Phonsie O'Brien and niece of Vincent O'Brien.

From his first marriage he had issue, four sons, Charles, Luke, Jago and Samson, one of whom died young. From his second marriage he leaves two daughters, and was predeceased by two sons.

His second son, Luke (born 18 Sept, 1967), is the husband of Alice Rosalind Elliot (born 1977), daughter of the late Simon John Elliot (1940-2023), and his wife the former (Sonia) Annabel Shand (born 2 Feb, 1949), sister of Her Majesty Queen Camilla.

 Sir John Maxwell Macdonald of Largie and of Pollok, 12th Baronet, died 24 December, 2023, aged 87.

He was born 22 May, 1936, son of John Maxwell Macdonald (1908-1995), head of that landed gentry family, and his wife Dame Anne Stirling-Maxwell, 11th Baronetess (1906-2011), who was recognised by Lyon Court in 2005 as 11th holder of the baronetcy (formerly Stirling-Maxwell) under the 1707 remainder, succeeding her father in 1956. One of the few baronetcies descendible to females.

He succeeded to his mother's baronetcy, 21 April, 2011. 

Sir John married 18 July, 1964, Eleanor Ruth Laird, daughter of T.B. Laird, of Taylor's Wynd, Forfar, Angus, by whom he had issue, two sons, John and Angus, and a daughter, Victoria. 

He is succeeded in the baronetcy (cr Nova Scotia, 1682), by his elder son, John Ranald (Jock) who was born 16 September, 1965.

She was born Gillian Mary Downes in 1930, daughter of Eric Mytton Downes, OBE (1901-1963), and his wife the former Ella Mary Ball (1899-1959); and married 2 May, 1953, Archibald Birkmyre (born 12 February, 1923), son of Sir Henry Birkmyre, 2nd Baronet (1898-1992), and his wife the former Doris Gertrude Smith (1901-1992), by whom she had issue, a son, James, and two daughters, Alison and Serena.

Her husband succeeded his father, 10 March, 1992, as third baronet, and died 7 May, 2001, when he was succeeded by their son, Sir James Birkmyre, 4th Baronet (born 29 February, 1956).

 Sir Michael Colman, 3rd Baronet, who died 26 December, 2023, aged 95, was a member of the eponymous mustard manufacturing family; a director of Reckitt & Colman plc 1970-85, chairman 1986-95.

Michael Jeremiah Colman was born 7 July, 1928, son of Sir Jeremiah Colman, 2nd Baronet (1886-1961), and his wife the former Edith Gwendolen Tritton (1902-1980), scion of the Tritton baronets; and succeeded to the baronetcy (UK, cr 1907), on the death of his father, 8 January, 1961.

He married 29 October, 1955, Judith Jean Wallop William-Powlett (born 7 February, 1936), scion of the Earls of Portsmouth, daughter of Vice Admiral Sir Peveril Barton Reibey William -Powlett, KCB, KCMG, CBE, DSO (1898-1985), and his 1st wife the former Helen Constance Forbes Crombie (1903-1965), by whom he had issue, two sons, Jeremiah and John, and three daughters, Olivia, Victoria and Alice.

General Sir Frank Kitson, GBE, KCB, MC & Bar, DL 1926-2024

 General Sir Frank Edward Kitson, GBE, KCB, MC & Bar, DL, died 2 January, 2024, aged 97. 

Kitson was a British Army officer and writer on military subjects, notably low intensity operations. He rose to be Commander-in-Chief UK Land Forces from 1982 to 1985 and was Aide-de-Camp General to HM Queen Elizabeth II from 1983 to 1985.

He was born 15 December, 1926, son of Vice Admiral Sir Henry Karslake Kitson, KBE, CB (1877-1952) and his wife the former Marjorie de Pass, daughter of Sir Eliot Arthur de Pass. His uncle Frank de Pass was the first Jewish recipient of the Victoria Cross.

Kitson joined the British Army as a second lieutenant on an emergency commission in the Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own) on 23 February 1946. He was appointed to a regular commission as a lieutenant on 10 April 1948 (with seniority from 15 December 1947), and promoted to captain on 15 December 1953. He was awarded the Military Cross (MC) on 1 January 1955 for service in the Mau Mau Uprising in Kenya, and was awarded a Bar to it on 23 May 1958, for service in the Malayan Emergency the previous year. 

Kitson was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 1959 Queen's Birthday Honours. He was promoted major on 15 December 1960, brevet lieutenant-colonel on 1 July 1964, and to the substantive rank on 31 December 1966. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1968 New Year Honours. He was promoted colonel on 31 December 1969 (with seniority from 30 June 1969), and brigadier on 30 June 1970.

From September 1970, Kitson commanded 39 Airportable Brigade, which comprised eight (frequently changing) battalions on short four-month tours. A further brigade was usually attached as brigade reserve, but this could be employed elsewhere as required. On 15 February 1972 he was promoted Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his operational service in Northern Ireland the previous year. According to Belfast politician Paddy Devlin, Kitson "probably did more than any other individual to sour relations between the Catholic community and the security forces" in Northern Ireland. On 22 January 1976 he became General Officer Commanding 2nd Division, with the acting rank of major-general,with substantive promotion following on 5 April 1976 (and seniority from 2 June 1974), and leading its re-designation as an Armoured Division in Germany before stepping down on 28 February 1978. He was then Commandant of the Staff College, Camberley, 5 March 1978 – 18 January 1980. He was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in the 1980 New Year Honours. On 17 March 1980 he was appointed Deputy Commander-in-Chief UK Land Forces and Inspector General Territorial Army, with substantive promotion to lieutenant-general (and seniority backdated to 17 August 1979). He held those appointments until 30 May 1982, and then became Commander-in-Chief, UK Land Forces on 1 July 1982 with local rank of general.

As is traditional for senior officers of the British Army, Kitson held a number of more honorary positions: Colonel Commandant of 2nd Battalion, Royal Green Jackets from 1 January 1979 to 1 January 1987; Honorary Colonel to the University of Oxford Officer Training Corps from 21 July 1982 to 21 July 1987; and Aide-de-Camp General to the Queen from 14 February 1983 to 1985.  In 1985 he was promoted to Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE). He was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Devon on 19 June 1989. 

In 1962, Kitson married Elizabeth Janet Spencer (born 10 Dec, 1938), whose father, Colonel Charles Spencer, was Colonel of the 12th Royal Lancers. Lady Kitson is descended from the Cavendish Earls of Burlington (and thus descended from the Dukes of Devonshire). Lady Kitson was appointed an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List of June 2015, for her work with the Army Families Federation. They have three daughters: Catherine Alice, Rosemary Diana and Marion Ruth.

Richard Kimber Franklin 1936-2023

Richard Kimber Franklin, actor, who died on Christmas Day, 2023, aged 87, was a grandson maternally of Sir Henry Kimber, 2nd Baronet (1862-1950).

Franklin played Capt Yates in Doctor Who and Denis Rigg in the ITV soap Emmerdale. It was as the on-and-off travelling companion of Jon Pertwee's Doctor Who that he gained a cult following.

Richard Kimber Franklin was born 15 January, 1936, son of Richard Harrington Franklin, a surgeon, and his wife Helen Margaret Kimber, daughter of Sir Henry Dixon Kimber, 2nd Baronet.

Richard Franklin unsuccessfully stood as a parliamentary candidate several times in general elections, for the Liberal Democrats in 1992, UKIP in 2001 and the Silent Majority Party in 2005. He never married.

 The Dowager Lady Vyvyan, who has died aged 92, was the third wife and widow of Sir John Vyvyan, 12th Baronet.

The former Jonet Noel Barclay was born 28 August, 1931, elder daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Alexander Hubert Barclay, DSO, MC, CStJ (1900-1980), scion of that Scots landed gentry family, and his wife the former Muriel Rose Mitchelson (1905-1965), daughter of Sir Archibald Mitchelson, 1st & last Baronet (1878-1945), &c.

She married in 1958, as his third wife, Major John Stanley Vyvyan (born 20 January, 1916), son of Major-General Ralph Ernest Vyvyan, CBE, MC (1891-1971), and his wife the former Vera Grace Alexander (1894-1956). Her husband succeeded to the baronetcy (created in 1645), on the death of his kinsman, Sir Richard, the 11th Baronet, 15 May, 1978, and died 6 October, 1995.

Lady Vyvyan leaves a daughter, Amanda (born 22 Aug, 1959), and a son, Sir Ralph Ferrers Alexander Vyvyan, 13th Baronet (born 21 August, 1960).

Lieutenant General Sir (John) Norman Arthur, KCB, CVO 1931-2023

 Lieutenant General Sir Norman Arthur, KCB, CVO, who died 18 December, 2023, aged 92, was a former General Officer Commanding Scotland, and Governor of Edinburgh Castle.

He was born 6 March, 1931, scion of the Barons Glenarthur, son of Lieutenant-Colonel Evelyn Stewart Arthur (1899-1963), and his wife the former Elizabeth Burnett-Stuart (1905-1976), scion of that Scots landed gentry family; and married 1stly, 1 Oct, 1960, Theresa Mary Hopkinson (1938-2011), scion of the Barons Colyton; and married 2ndly, 2012, Jillian Constance Andrews. He leaves issue from his first marriage.

He was educated at Eton College and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, Arthur was commissioned into the Royal Scots Greys in 1951. At the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome he was part of the British equestrian team for the three-day event; he withdrew after the cross-country phase. Arthur was appointed Commanding Officer of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards in 1972 and mentioned in despatches for service in Northern Ireland in 1974. He became Commander of 7th Armoured Brigade in 1976. Arthur went on to be General Officer Commanding 3rd Armoured Division in 1980 and Director of Personal Services (Army) in 1983. He was given the colonelcy of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards in 1984, a position he held until 1998. He was appointed General Officer Commanding Scotland and Governor of Edinburgh Castle in 1985; he retired in 1988. In 1996 he became Lord Lieutenant of the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, Dumfries and Galloway Region, and held this post until succeeded by Malcolm Ross in March 2006.

 Dr Alexandra Matheson (nee Dudley-Cooke), wife of Andrew William Fergus Matheson of Matheson yr (b 12 March, 1985), scion of the Matheson baronets (Bt, UK, cr 1882), gave birth to a son, Maximilian, 31 December, 2023.

Andrew Matheson of Matheson is son and heir of Lieutenant-Col Sir Alexander Fergus Matheson of Matheson, 8th Baronet (b 26 Aug, 1954), of Brightwalton, Berkshire, by his wife the former Katharine Davina Mary Oswald (born 19 March, 1959).

Dr Alexandra L. Dudley-Cooke, yst dau of Mr & Mrs Robert Dudley-Cooke, of St Mawes, Cornwall.

Andrew Matheson is a grandson paternally of Sir Fergus Matheson of Matheson, 7th Bt (1927-2017), and a grandson maternally of Sir Michael Oswald, KCVO (1934-2021), by his wife the former Lady Angela Cecil, LVO (b 21 May, 1938), dau of the 6th Marquess of Exeter (1905-1981), &c.

 Rosalind Mary Chetwynd-Talbot (née Bilney), died 24 December, 2023, aged 91.

She was born in 1932, at Bicester, daughter of Air Vice-Marshal Christopher Neil Hope Bilney, CB, CBE (1898-1988), and his wife the former Nellie Garner Perren (1896-1983); and married 29 January, 1955, Christopher Patrick Chetwynd-Talbot (1922-2011), scion of the Earls Talbot, son of Gilbert Patrick Chetwynd Chetwynd-Talbot (1886-1958), and his wife the former Alice Alethea Moller, by whom she had issue, a son, Patrick (born 12 Jan, 1958), and a daughter, Harriet (born 23 Dec, 1959).
