Merle Aurelia Barrington (nee Ropner), who died 18 January, 2024, aged 84, was a scion of the Ropner shipping family, born 12 Oct, 1939, elder daughter of Sir Leonard Ropner, 1st Baronet, DL (1895-1977), Conservative MP for Barkston Ash 1931-64, and his wife the former Esme Barbara Robertson (1910-1996); and was twice wed, 1stly, 29 Sept, 1960 (div 1968), Christopher John Spence (1937-2021), of Chievely Manor, Newbury, son of Brigadier Ian Fleming Morris Spence, OBE, MC, TD, and his wife the former Ruth Peacock; married 2ndly, 6 Sept, 1968, Major Lawrence Hew Williams Barrington (1928-1998), scion of the Barrington baronets, son of Richard Irving Williams Barrington (1892-1928), and his wife Constance Elizabeth Mary Manders (who died 1972).
From her first marriage she had a son, Jeremy (1964-1982), and a daughter, Miranda (born 6 Jan, 1963), and from her second marriage she leaves a son, Shaun (born 9 July, 1969).
