David Lycett Green, who died 11 November, 2024, aged 49, was a scion of the Green baronets, and a grandson maternally of the poet Sir John Betjeman.

David Petroc Lycett Green, was born 20 September, 1975, the elder son of Rupert William Lycett Green (born 24 October, 1938), and his wife the author Candida Rose Lycett Green (1942-2014).

Whereas his mother, Candida, co-authored a book with the King about the royal garden at Highgrove, Dave – as Lycett Green was known – opted for a less conventional path, summarised by his younger brother John in an online tribute as 'friend of the homeless, proud tramp, kind, generous, brave, courageous, humble, honest'. Dave followed his father, Rupert Lycett Green, to Eton. But unlike Rupert, who invigorated men's fashion with his 1960s shop Blades, Dave favoured 'white gloves shell suit, fresh Nike' (below), sometimes supplementing the effect with a top hat and a cane. A book, In Search Of The English Eccentric by Henry Hemming, recorded his fixation with magic and freemasonry – and his playful self-description as 'the Lord of Kensington'.

Dave Lycett Green was unmarried.

Sir Henry Neville Lindley Keswick 1938-2024

Sir Henry Keswick, head of Jardine Matheson and owner of The Spectator during a golden era, died 5 November, 2024. He was 86.

Keswick was a youthful taipan of Jardine Matheson, his family’s Far Eastern trading house, and later, for four decades, its presiding spirit from London. He was also a benevolent proprietor of The Spectator magazine, though the political career that he hoped might follow did not transpire.

He joined Jardines in 1961 and was assigned to the firm's offices in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. He was made a director in 1967, senior managing director in 1970 and chairman in 1972. He retired as senior managing director and chairman in 1975. He returned to London and is the current chairman of Jardine Matheson Holdings.

Henry Neville Lindley Keswick, William Jardine's great-grandson, was born in Shanghai, 29 September, 1938. He was the eldest of three sons of Sir William “Tony” Keswick (1903-90), who combined his role as a resident director of Jardines with the chairmanship of the Municipal Council of Shanghai’s International Settlement, and was later a director of the Bank of England. Henry's mother was Mary Etheldreda Lindley (1911-2009), a great-granddaughter of Simon Fraser, 13th Lord Lovat (1828-87).

Henry had a sister, Teresa, and two brothers, Sir John Chippendale "Chips" Keswick (1940-2024), who was not associated with Jardine Matheson but instead with the London merchant bank, Hambros. He was the chairman of  Arsenal football club, who died in April, and a brother Simon (born 1942), also a managing director of Jardine Matheson.

It was his cousin Hon. Annabel Thérèse (Tessa) Fraser (1942-2022) – then married to the 14th Lord Reay (1937-2013), but who became Henry Keswick’s wife in 1985 – who first suggested that he should buy The Spectator. He called on the magazine’s then owner, Harry Creighton, and agreed to buy it for £75,000.

Henry Keswick’s country home was Oare House, a Georgian mansion near Marlborough in Wiltshire, where he and his wife commissioned a contemporary pavilion by the Chinese-American architect IM Pei. In the Keswick homeland of Dumfriesshire, Henry enjoyed the sporting life at Glenkiln, a wild domain inherited from his father with its collection of sculptures by Moore and Epstein in moorland settings; Henry Moore’s Standing Figure, valued at £3 million, was stolen from the estate in 2015.

He also owned and greatly improved an 18,000-acre grouse moor at Hunthill in Angus. For recreation in London, Keswick was a keen bridge player at the Portland Club.

He was appointed Knight Bachelor in 2009.

John Andrew Bruce Savile, styled Viscount Pollington 1959-2024

John Andrew Bruce Savile, styled Viscount Pollington, who died 23 October, 2024, aged 64, was the  elder son of the 8th Earl of Mexborough, and heir to North Yorkshire estates extending to 20,000 acres.

Viscount Pollington’s life has been marked by tragedy, having lost his mother and sister to drug addiction.

He was born 30 November, 1959, the first child of the 8th Earl of Mexborough (born 16 May, 1931), and his first wife, the former Lady Elisabeth Hariot Grimston (1939-1987), daughter of the 6th Earl of Verulam, DL (1912-1973). The Mexborough country estate is at Arden Hall, Hawnby, near York.

The Savile family has lived in Yorkshire since the middle ages. A branch of the family, later to become Earls of Mexborough in 1766, came to live at Methley, near Wakefield in the 15th century and this estate remains a core part of the portfolio to this day. Methley Hall was constructed in 1588 by the family and subsequently remodeled several times. It was requisitioned by the army during both the first and second world wars, during which time it also became subject to significant mining subsidence and extensive dry rot. The Hall was demolished in the late 1950s and the family moved to Arden Hall in the North York Moors near Hawnby and Helmsley, which had been purchased in 1897 by the 6th Earl of Mexborough.

Young Johnny was followed by a sister, Lady Alethea Savile (born 3 June, 1963), and both children had an unconventional upbringing. They moved to London with their erratic mother, Elisabeth, who sometimes had breakfast brought to her at 4am. ‘It was a tricky childhood,’ recalled a contemporary. ‘Johnny was always snivelling.’

In adulthood, Lady Alethea believed herself trapped in a love triangle involving her one-time fiance, James Gilbey, and Gilbey’s closest female friend, Diana, Princess of Wales, whom Gilbey nicknamed ‘Squidgy’. Alethea was shattered by the socalled ‘Squidgy Tapes’ — recordings released of intimate conversations between Gilbey and the Princess of Wales, in which Gilbey said to Diana: ‘Oh Squidgy, I love you.’ On 16 September, 1994, Viscount Pollington found Lady Alethea Savile dead in her Chelsea flat, dosed with heroin, cocaine and antidepressants. The inquest heard how, instead of reporting her death, he attempted to hunt down those he believed had sold her the drugs, became involved in ‘a scuffle’ in a house in Barnes, South-West London, then went to a pub where he downed ‘three or four doubles’. In 1995, Pollington was arrested for threatening customers of the Grove Tavern in Knightsbridge. In January, 1996, the 36 year-old Pollington walked from the Old Bailey dock declaring: ``I have been a bloody idiot.'' Still grieving over his sister Lady Alethea Savile's death, Pollington had developed a drink problem which led to aggression and mood swings, the court heard. The judge, Recorder Heather Hallett, was told armed police had arrested and handcuffed Pollington at his home in Knightsbridge, London, after he had threatened customers at his local hotel. He was released on bail but became aggressive with two staff at a Chelsea off-licence a month later after one refused to serve him because he was drunk. They retreated into a back room, locked the door, and called police. In court Lord Pollington admitted possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear and affray. His counsel, Mr David Etherington, said his client had found his sister dead from a mixture of heroin, cocaine, and anti-depressants the previous September. Lady Alethea was once engaged to the Princess of Wales' friend Mr James Gilbey. ``He (Pollington) had been her carer. He adored her,'' Mr Etherington said. ``They had a very close relationship. He thought he was uniquely equipped to help her. ``He suffers a mixture of anger, grief, and guilt because he feels he was unable to stop her death. It is thought her death led to a drink problem, which led to these events.'' Judge Hallett said she had thought of imprisonment when first she read the case papers. She warned Pollington that if he repeated his drunken behaviour ``no court would give you another chance''. She gave him two years' probation, provided he continued medical treatment for his problems, and ordered he perform 100 hours' community service.

Johnny Pollington's parents divorced in 1972, and his mother died from addiction in 1987. The Earl of Mexborough married secondly, 5 June, 1972, Catherine Joyce Vivian (former wife of the Hon Nicholas Crespigny Laurence Vivian, 6th Baron Vivian), youngest daughter of James Kenneth Hope CBE, of West Park, Lanchester, Co. Durham, by whom he had further issue, a son the Hon James Hugh Hope John Savile (born 21 Aug 1976), and a daughter Lady Lucinda Sarah Catherine Savile (born 3 Apr, 1973), who married 28 Oct, 2006, Edward G T J Ankarcrona, 2nd son of Jan Gustaf Theodor Stensson Ankarcrona (born 18 Apr 1940) by his former wife Ebba Margaretha Antoine von Eckermann (who married, as his 2nd wife, Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi (born 1951).

Johnny Pollington found happiness and on 11 June, 2019, aged 58, he married Mrs Norma Isolde Findlay (born 1963), a divorcee, daughter of John Phoenix, by his wife Elizabeth.

Viscountess Pollington is a former counsellor and a polygraph examiner working for one of the UK’s leading lie detection services.

Johnny Pollington was childless. His younger half-brother, the Hon James Savile is now heir to the family peerages, the Earldom of Mexborough (created 1766, in the Peerage of Ireland), the Viscountcy of Pollington (also in the Peerage of Ireland, 1766), and the Barony of Pollington (in the Peerage of Ireland, created 1753).It remains to be seen whether James will assume the courtesy title of Viscount Pollington.

His career crashed in 2011 when he was jailed for nine months for overclaiming £13,379 in parliamentary allowances. He had claimed between 2006 and 2009 for nights when he had not stayed in London, others when the Lords had not been sitting, and one when he had been on a flight to India.

While Hanningfield also spent lavishly on county business – running up £286,000 on his council credit card in five years – a police investigation found no evidence there of fraud.

His misdeeds came to light in the wake of The Daily Telegraph’s exposure in 2009 of MPs’ abuse of parliamentary expenses. Indeed, he was tried alongside three Labour MPs: David Chaytor, Jim Devine and Eliot Morley.

Eventually found to have overclaimed £30,254, Hanningfield told the court he had regarded the sums as a “living-out-of-London allowance” rather than overnight subsistence. “No one ever told me those forms were so important. I’m horrified to be here now because of them.”

He insisted he had “done the same as 600 other peers” and had been singled out (Lord Taylor of Warwick, a fellow Tory, was the only other peer imprisoned over expenses). He claimed that Bob Russell, Lib Dem MP for Colchester, had reported him after they argued over the future of a local school.

The irony was that Hanningfield lived a simple life. At the time of his disgrace he was living in a bungalow on a small agricultural pension, selling land behind it to pay his legal bills. He paid his research assistant out of his own pocket, had never got round to claiming his local government pension, and had a cigar tin full of receipts for which he had not sought reimbursement.

Despite this apparent unworldliness, he had worked his way up over four decades to become an effective and respected leader of his council. Months before he was charged with fraud, he had concluded an outsourcing deal with IBM projected to save the council £240 million per year.

...In 1998 he became leader of the council, and William Hague had him made a life peer; Hanningfield served in turn as a whip and a spokesman on education and transport. In 2005 a parliamentary question from him revealed that Tony Blair had spent £1,800 of public money over eight years on cosmetics and make-up artists.

Under Hanningfield’s leadership Essex drove down costs and stayed financially sound despite the global financial crisis that broke in 2007. Colleagues and staff knew he was conducting council business in style, but he retained their confidence until his parliamentary expenses were revealed.

In February 2010 he was charged on six counts of false accounting. David Cameron withdrew the Conservative whip from him and he stood down as council leader. His successor, Peter Martin, praised his stewardship but took steps to tighten the council’s “governance framework”. Hanningfield resigned his seat just before his trial.

He was released with a tag in September 2011, having served nine weeks of his sentence. Days later, Essex police arrested him again over his council expenses, holding him for eight hours. No charges were brought, and Hanningfield won £3,500 damages for wrongful arrest.

Suspended by the Lords until April 2012, he spoke in October 2013 for the first time since his imprisonment, criticising train services in Essex but welcoming plans for a new station outside Chelmsford. After media reports that he had been claiming his £300-a-day attendance allowance but staying less than 40 minutes, he was suspended in May 2014 for a further year.

Hanningfield was leader of the Association of County Councils from 1995 to 1997; chairman of the Council of Local Education Authorities from 1990 to 1992; deputy chairman of the Local Government Association from 1997 to 2001; a vice-president of the EU’s Committee of the Regions; and a member of the court of Essex University. He was appointed deputy lieutenant for Essex in 1991.

Paul White never married. He told his trial he “wouldn’t survive” without Jefferson, his Bernese mountain dog.
