The 21st Baron Trimlestown 1930-2024

Lord Trimlestown, who died 10 January, 2024, aged 93, was the 21st Baron in the Peerage of Ireland created in 1461.

Raymond Charles Barnewall was born 29 December, 1930, the second son of the 19th Baron Trimlestown (1899-1990), and his wife the former Muriel Schneider (1894-1937); and succeeded to the barony on the demise of his elder brother, Anthony, the 20th Baron, 19 August, 1997.  The peerage was created in 1461 for his ancestor Robert Barnewall, a supporter of Richard, Duke of York, who knighted him. He served on the Council of Ireland from 1461.

Lord Trimlestown survived his sister, the Hon Diana Birtwistle, by only two weeks. She died on Boxing Day 2023.

Lord Trimlestown, of Chiddingfold, Surrey, was unmarried, and the ancient peerage now becomes extinct, or dormant. There is no obvious heir presumptive, but a successor may be found amongst the descendants, if any, of Thomas Barnewall, of Bloomsbury, London, a cousin of the 17th and 18th Barons Trimlestown.
