Lord Brabourne marries Ambre Pouzet

 The marriage took place, 20 May, 2021, at Broadlands, Romsey, Hampshire, between Nicholas Charles Louis Norton Knatchbull, styled Baron Brabourne [born London, 15 May, 1981], only son and heir of the 3rd Earl Mountbatten of Burma [born 8 Oct, 1947], of Broadlands, Hampshire, and his wife the former Penelope Meredith Eastwood [born 16 Apr, 1953], & Ambre Pouzet [born 24 July, 1984].

Nicholas Knatchbull, who does not use his courtesy title, is a godson of HRH The Prince of Wales. His French-born bride, a behavioural therapist, was a 'mer-lesque' performing mermaid, according to the Daily Mail.

Lady Clarissa Collin 1938-2021

 Lady Clarissa Collin died suddenly, 23 July, 2021, at her home in North Yorkshire. She was 82.

Lady Clarissa, a scion of the extinct Earls of Feversham, was a deputy lieutenant for North Yorkshire, and a former High Sheriff  and JP of the county.

She was born 11 October, 1938, as Lady Clarissa Duncombe, the only child of Charles William Slingsby Duncombe, 3rd [and last] Earl of Feversham [1906-63], and his wife the former Lady Anne Dorothy Wood [1910-1995], scion of the Earls of Halifax, daughter of the 1st Earl of Halifax, KG, OM, GCSI, GCMG, GCIE, TD, PC [1881-1959], sometime Viceroy and Gov Gen of India, and his wife the Lady Dorothy Evelyn Augusta Onslow, DCVO [1885-1976], scion of the Earls of Onslow, and an Extra Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

Lady Clarissa was a goddaughter of Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent. The princess with her son and daughter-in-law the Duke and Duchess of Kent, attended Lady Clarissa's marriage, 14 December, 1966, to Major Nicholas Spencer Compton Collin [1918-2004], late the Coldstream Guards, of Whytherstone House, Pockley, York, son of Maj. Francis Spencer Collin [1885-1920], of 42 Eaton Place, Belgravia, and Fullers Farm, West Grinstead, Sussex, and his wife the former Bertha Mary Hornung [1885-1974].

Lady Clarissa leaves a son, Frederick Collin [b 30 Oct 1967], and a daughter, Laura [b 25 Aug, 1969], wife of the Hon John Greenall [b 22 Jul 1960], scion of the Barons Daresbury.

The funeral service is to be held at All Saints Church, Helmsley, on Thursday 5th August 2021.

Diana attended the Bartholomew's wedding in 1982, and stood as godmother to Carolyn's son, Jack, born in 1989. 

Carolyn Bartholomew is one of the godparents of the Duke of Sussex, and she and Mr Bartholomew attended Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle in 2018. During a 2017 auction "intimate letters" that Diana sent to Mrs Bartholomew fetched more than £93,000.

Dr Sir Thomas Francis Grattan [Tom] Esmonde, 17th Baronet 1960-2021

 Dr Sir Thomas Esmonde, 17th Baronet, died at his home in Northern Ireland, 24 July, 2021. He was 60.

Sir Thomas was senior house officer between 1985 and 1987 at Whiteabbey Hospital. He was registered as a Member, Royal College of Physicians, Ireland (MRCPI) He was registered as a Member, Royal College of Physicians, London (MRCP) in 1987. He was Medical Registrar between 1988 and 1989 at Royal Gwent Hospital, Gwent, Wales. He was Registrar in Neurology between 1989 and 1990 at University Hospital of Wales. Sir Tom was Clinical Resident Fellow between 1990 and 1992 at Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He was Clinical Registrar in Neurology and Consutlant in Neurology in 1992 at Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, &c.

He was born 14 Oct, 1960, son of Sir John Henry Grattan Esmonde, 16th Baronet [1928-87], and his wife the former Pamela Mary Bourke, and succeeded to the baronetcy [created in 1629], on the death of his father in 1987.

Tom Esmonde married 26 April, 1986, Pauline Loretto Kearns, daughter of James Vincent Kearns, by whom he had issue, a son, Sean, and two daughters, Aisling and Niamh.

He is succeeded in the Irish baronetcy by his only son, Sean Vincent Grattan Esmonde, who was born 8 January, 1989.

The funeral service takes place at St. Brigid's Parish, Belfast, on 30 July, 2021, followed by private cremation at Roselawn Crematorium.

Diana Mulholland [nee Lucas] 1929-2021

[Lilian] Diana Tindall Mulholland, died 30 June, 2021, aged 92. She was the widow of Martin Mulholland [1927-2003], scion of the Barons Dunleath.

She was born in 1929, the former Lilian Diana Tindall Lucas, daughter of John de Blaquiere Tindall Lucas, MC, and his wife the former Lilian Cecily King, and married 24 Feb, 1953, Martin Edward Harcourt Mulholland [born 23 Feb, 1927], son of the Hon Godfrey John Arthur Murray Lyle Mulholland [1892-1948], and his wife the former Hon Olivia Vernon Harcourt, DCVO [1902-84], sometime Woman of the Bedchamber to HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, daughter of the 1st Viscount Harcourt [1863-1922].

Her husband died 1 Nov, 2003. Mrs Mulholland leaves issue, three sons, John, Simon and Giles.

 Mary, Lady Ashburnham, who died 5 July, 2021, aged 97, was the widow of Sir Denny Ashburnham, 12th Baronet [1916-1999].

She was born in 1923, daughter of Maj. Robert Pascoe Mair, of Udimore, Sussex, and married 22 June, 1946, Denny Reginald Ashburnham [born 24 March, 1916], son of Sir Fleetwood Ashburnham, 11th Baronet [1869-1953], and his wife the former Elfrida Kirkley [d 19 Oct, 1953].

Her husband succeeded to the baronetcy [created 1661] on his fatther's death, 5 March, 1953, and died 21 June, 1999.

Lady Ashburnham is survived by a daughter, Frances [born 11 Sept, 1947], and was predeceased by a second daughter, Honor [1949-2017], and a son, John [1951-1981]. Her grandson is Sir James Fleetwood Ashburnham, 13th Baronet [born 17 Dec, 1979].

 Paul Julian Fox died 8 July, 2021, aged 67. 

Born in 1954, son of Paul Maurice Fox, he married 29 September, 1979, Elspeth Anne Vavasour [born 13 May, 1956], scion of the Vavasour baronets, daughter of Paul Vavasour [1929-2017], and his wife the former Pauline Mary Cable [1927-2015], by whom he had a son, Miles [born 1983], and two daughters, Oriana [b 1980], and Miranda [b 1985].

Richard John Barton 1928-2021

 Richard John Barton, late the 16th/5th Lancers, died 9 July, 2021, aged 93.

He was born in 1928, son of Colonel John Seddon Barton [1880-1972], of Ross-on-Wye, and his wife the former Blanche Hatt Cook [1888-1986]. He married 26 July, 1952 [marriage annulled 1953], as her first husband, the Hon Jocelyne FitzRoy Newdegate [1929-2013], scion of the Viscounts Daventry, and sister of the 3rd Viscount [1921-2000]. He was later partner of Patrick Leonard Crossley [who died in 2018].

Mr Barton was a first cousin of Group Capt Peter Townsend [1914-95].

Teresa Mary Smalley [nee Rogers-Coltman] 1929-2021

Teresa Mary Smalley, who died 18 July, 2021, aged 92, was a scion of the Coltman-Rogers landed gentry family; born in 1929, daughter of Lieutenant-Commander Julian Coltman Rogers-Coltman, OBE, RNVR [1898-1944], and his wife the former Mary Malet Shaw [1908-2000], scion of that landed gentry family. She married firstly, in 1952, John Christopher Michael Leyland, MC [1922-57], scion of that landed gentry family, son of Capt Christopher Digby Leyland [1892-1971], head of the family, and his wife the former Sylvia Evelyn Cotterell [1896-1944], scion of the baronets of that name. She married 2ndly, in 1958, Basil Joseph Craven Smalley [1920-85.

Mrs Smalley had issue, a son from her first marriage, Christopher Julian Leyland [1954-2016], and a daughter from her second marriage, Mary Gay [born 1959].

The funeral takes place at St.John the Baptist Church, Lowick 23 July, 2021.

The 9th Earl of Antrim 1935-2021

 The Earl of Antrim, ninth holder of the Irish peerage, of Glenarm Castle, has died aged 86.

Lord Antrim was Keeper of Conservation 1975-95, and Director [formerly Head] of Collection Services, 1990-95, Tate Gallery. Glenarm Castle, his family home, is one of Ulster's oldest estates.

Alexander Randal Mark McDonnell was born 3 February, 1935, son of the 8th Earl of Antrim, KBE [1911-77], and his wife the former Angela Christina Sykes [1911-84], daughter of Sir Mark Sykes, 6th Baronet, of Sledmere.

He succeeded his father, 26 September, 1977, as Earl of Antrim [created in 1620] and Viscount Dunluce, but continued to be known as Viscount Dunluce, the courtesy title by which he had been known since birth, until 1995.

He married firstly, 9 February, 1963 [divorced 1974], Sarah Elizabeth Anne Harmsworth [born 28 March, 1941], daughter of St John Bernard Vyvyan Harmsworth [1912-95], and his wife the former Jane Penelope Boothby [1914-94]. He married 2ndly, 21 Oct, 1977, Elizabeth Hannah Sacher, daughter of Michael Moses Sacher [1917-86], a great-grandson of Michael Marks, founder of Marks & Spencer, and his wife the former Audrey Glucksman.

Career: educated at Downside and Christ Church Oxford and the Ruskin School of Art. She married firstly, 17 January, 1952 [divorced 1957], the Hon Jeremy John Cubitt [1927-58], scion of the Barons Ashcombe. The four-year old Camilla Shand [later Duchess of Cornwall] was a bridesmaid.

The Hon Jeremy Cubitt died tragically, 12 Jan, 1958, aged 30. He was the younger son of the 3rd Baron Ashcombe [1899-1962], and his wife the former Sonia Rosemary Keppel [1900-86], and was a brother of the Hon Rosalind Cubitt [1921-94], mother of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall.

Diana married 2ndly, 1957 [divorced 1980], Nigel Arthur Tunnicliffe [1928-82], descended from the Lords Mowbray, Segrave & Stourton, son of Maj Eric Charlton Tunnicliffe, and his wife the former Barbara Bertha Mary Stourton [1900-80].

Diana Tunnicliffe leaves a daughter from her first marriage, Sarah Cubitt [born 1953], and a daughter from the second marriage, Brigid Tunnicliffe [born 1963], and was predeceased by a daughter, Joanna Tunnicliffe who died in infancy in 1958.

Bruce/Knott marriage

 The marriage took place 3 July, 2021, between Major General Alastair Andrew Bernard Reibey Bruce of Crionaich, OBE, KStJ, DL [born 25 June, 1960], and his partner of 20 years, Stephen Knott, son of Mr & Mrs Michael Knott, of County Down.

Alastair Bruce is the Governor of Edinburgh Castle, Fitzalan Pursuivant Extraordinary, Extra Equerry to the Earl and Countess of Wessex and Forfar, and godfather to Viscount Severn, grandson of the Queen, &c.

He commentates on Royal, Religious and National Events for Sky News, and was previously engaged by the BBC, and was historical adviser to several feature films and the ITV series Downton Abbey. He has commentated on many major state events in the United Kingdom, including the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the Royal Wedding in 2011, the Papal Visit in 2010, and the deaths and funerals of the Princess of Wales in 1997, the Queen Mother in 2002 and the Duke of Edinburgh in 2021.

Bruce is a scion of the Earls of Elgin & Kincardine, younger son of Lieutenant Commander Henry Victor Bruce [1924-2011], and his wife the former Helen Vernon Wallop William-Powlett [born 16 Dec, 1927], scion of the Wallops Earls of Portsmouth.

The life peerage awarded to Sir Simon Stevens has been announced

The life peerage awarded to Sir Simon Stevens has been gazetted in the name, style and title of Baron Stevens of Birmingham, of Richmond upon Thames in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.

Simon Laurence Stevens, who was born 4 August 1966, is a British health manager and public policy analyst serving as the eighth Chief Executive of the National Health Service in England since 2014. He previously served as an executive at the UnitedHealth Group from 2004 to 2014, an American for-profit managed health care company which offers health care products and insurance services. A former member of the Labour Party, he was a councillor in the London Borough of Lambeth from 1998 to 2002.

Lord Stevens was appointed CE of NHS England by Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron and retained by his successors Theresa May and Boris Johnson. He will step down from his role on 31 July 2021, and has been appointed a Life Peer for his services during the coronavirus pandemic.

 Marion Caroline Marsham, who has died aged 81, was a scion of the Earls of Romney, descended from the 3rd Earl.

She was born 10 Oct, 1939, eldest child of Peter Marsham, and his wife the former Margaret Harrel, daughter of Benjamin Harrel. She married firstly, 7 Oct, 1961 [div 1978], Richard Naylor; married 2ndly, 1981 [div 1989], Dr George Richard Castellain Walton. She leaves two sons, and a daughter from her first marriage. She reverted to her maiden name following her second divorce.

Helen Lefroy 1921-2021

 Helen Lefroy, a publishing executive and stalwart of the Jane Austen Society, died 17 May, 2021, aged 100. She was a scion of the Maxwell-Lefroy family, of Itchel Manor.

She was born 18 Apr, 1921, daughter of Capt Cecil Maxwell-Lefroy, CMG, RN [1876-1931], head of that landed family, and his wife Beatrice Wild Clegg [1886-1968].

Her ancestor the Rev George Lefroy was a neighbour of the Rev George Austen, both rectors of adjoining parishes in late 18th-century Hampshire: Austen at Steventon, Lefroy at Ashe. Austen’s daughter was Jane Austen, who was encouraged in her early writing by Lefroy’s wife, Anne.

Nicoletta, Lady Lindsay of Dowhill [died 2021]

 Nicoletta, Lady Lindsay of Dowhill, who died 15 June, 2021, was the widow of Sir Ronald Lindsay of Dowhill, 2nd Baronet.

She was the former Nicoletta Storich, daughter of Capt Edgar Storich, of the Royal Italian Navy, and married 11 January, 1968, Ronald Alexander Lindsay [born 6 Dec, 1933], son and heir of Sir Martin Lindsay of Dowhill, 1st Baronet [1905-81], and his wife Joyce Emily Lindsay [1904-98], scion of the Earls of Crawford & Balcarres, a granddaughter of the 26th Earl.

Her husband succeeded his father in the baronetcy, 5 May, 1981, and died 6 March, 2004, aged 70.

Lady Lindsay is survived by three sons and a daughter. Her eldest son is Sir James Lindsay of Dowhill, 3rd Bt.

A funeral will be held on 16 July 2021 at St Paul’s Church Knightsbridge.

Sir Peter Frederick Leighton Mills, 3rd Baronet 1924-2021

 Sir Peter Frederick Frederick Leighton Mills, 3rd Baronet, died in Johannesburg, South Africa, 30 June, 2021. He was 96.

He was born 9 July, 1924, son of Sir Frederick Leighton Victor Mills, 2nd Baronet (1893-1955), and his wife the former Dorian Armitage, and succeeded to the baronetcy (UK, 1921), on his father's death, 21 April, 1955.

He married 11 Dec, 1954, Pauline Mary Allen, daughter of Lionel Raymond Allen and his wife the former Yvonne Cooper, by whom he had a son, Michael Victor Leighton Mills (born 30 Aug, 1957), who now inherits the baronetcy.

David Vines White appointed Garter King of Arms

The Queen has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 1 July 2021 to appoint David Vines White, Esquire, lately Somerset Herald, to the office of Garter Principal King of Arms, vacant by the retirement of Sir Thomas Woodcock, KCVO.

David White was appointed Rouge Croix Pursuivant in 1995 and was promoted to Somerset Herald in 2004. He was the Registrar of the College of Arms from 2014 to 2021.

The 8th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe 1939-2021

  The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, 8th holder of the peerage, died 12 June, 2021. He was 82.

Lord Mount Edgcumbe [Earldom created 1789], was also Viscount Mount Edgcumbe and Valletort [created 1781].

He was a farm worker in New Zealand, and manager for Lands and Survey, New Zealand , 1975-84, and took up the family seat in Cornwall in 1984. His home was Empacombe House, Cremyll, Cornwall.

He was born 1 June, 1939, the second, but eldest surviving son, of George Aubrey Valletort Edgcumbe [1907-77], and his first wife Meta Blucher, daughter of Robert Charles Lhoyer, of Nancy, France.

He succeeded to the peerages and Cornish estate on the death of his uncle, the 7th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, 9 December, 1982.

He married firstly, 1960 [div 1988], Joan Ivy Wall, daughter of Ernest Wall, by whom he had five daughters. He married 2ndly, in 2017, Beryl Joyce Cottrell.

Lord Mount Edgcumbe is survived by his second wife and five daughters, Lady Valerie, Lady Megan, Lady Tracy, Lady Vanessa and Lady Alison. 

The family honours now devolve upon his half-brother, the Hon Christopher George Mortimer Edgcumbe, who was born in 1950.

The Hon Lady Roberts, DCVO 1949-2021

The Hon Lady Roberts, DCVO, who died 29 June, 2021, aged, 71, was a senior member of the Royal Household, the Curator of the Print Room at Windsor Castle from 1975 and the Royal Librarian from 2002 until her retirement in July 2013. She was a scion of the Barons Aldington.

She was born the Hon [Priscilla] Jane Stephanie Low, 4 September, 1949, daughter of the 1st Baron Aldington [1914-2000], and his wife the former Felicité Ann Araminta MacMichael [1921-2012].

She married 13 December, 1975, Sir Hugh Ashley Roberts, GCVO [born 20 Apr, 1948], who was until 2010, the Director of the Royal Collection, the art collection of the British Royal Family, and Surveyor of the Queen's Works of Art, whose office is responsible for the care and maintenance of the royal collection of works of art owned by the Sovereign of the United Kingdom in an official capacity. Sir Hugh is the son of the Rt Rev Edward James Keymer Roberts [1908-2001], sometime Bishop of Ely, and his wife the former Dorothy Frances Bowser [died 1982].

Jane Roberts was appointed a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) in 1984. She was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant (LVO) in 1995, to Commander (CVO) in 2004, and to Dame Commander (DCVO) of the same Order in 2013.

She lived with Sir Hugh at Adelaide Cottage, a grace and favour home near Frogmore House in Home Park, Windsor. 

Lady Roberts is survived by her husband and leaves two daughters, Sophie Jane Cecilia Roberts (born 28 March 1978) and Amelia Frances Albinia Roberts (born 1982).
