Lord Elystan-Morgan 1932-2021

 Lord Elystan-Morgan, Labour life peer, has died aged 88.

Dafydd Elystan Elystan-Morgan was born 7 December, 1932, son of Dewi and Olwen Morgan, and was educated at Ardwyn Grammar School, Aberystwyth; University College Wales, Aberystwyth, &c.

Career: Admitted a solicitor, 1957; Partner in the North Wales [Wrexham] Firm of Solicitors 1958-68; Barrister-at-Law, Gray's Inn, 1971; a Recorder of the Crown Court 1983-87; Labour MP for Cardiganshire, 1966-Feb 1974; Chairman of the Welsh Parliamentary Labour Party 1967-68, and 1971-74; Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Home Office in the Wilson Government 1968-June 1970; front bench Opposition Spokesman on Home Affairs, 1970-72, on Welsh Affairs 1972-74, on Legal and Home Affairs in the House of Lords 1981-85; Contested [Labour] Cardigan, Oct 1974; contested Anglesley, May 1979; President of the Welsh Local Authorities Association, 1967-73. In 1987 he was appointed a Circuit Judge, &c.

Elystan Morgan assumed the addition surname of Elystan in 1981 and was raised to the peerage of life as Baron Elystan-Morgan, of Aberteifi, in the County of Dyfed.

He married in 1959, Alwen Roberts [died 19 Dec, 2006], daughter of William Roberts, by whom he had a son and a daughter.
