Max Rufus Mosley 1940-2021

_.Max Mosley, who died 23 May, 2021, aged 81, was a scion of the Mosley baronets, and was a British racing driver, lawyer and past president of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), a non-profit association which represents the interests of motoring organisations and car users worldwide. The FIA is also the governing body for Formula One and other international motorsports.

Max Rufus Mosley was born 13 April, 1940, son of Sir Oswald Mosley, 6th Baronet [1896-1980], and his second wife the former Hon Diana Freeman-Mitford [1910-2003], one of the celebrated Mitford Sisters, scion of the Barons Redesdale.

He married 9 July, 1960, Jean Marjorie Taylor, daughter of James Taylor, of Chelsea, by whom he had issue, two sons, Alexander [1970-2009], & Patrick [born 1972].

Max Mosley was a barrister and former amateur racing driver, who was the founder and co-owner of March Engineering, a racing car constructor and Formula One racing team. He dealt with legal and commercial matters for the company between 1969 and 1977 and became its representative at the Formula One Constructors' Association (FOCA), the body that represents Formula One constructors. Together with Bernie Ecclestone he represented FOCA at the FIA and in its dealings with race organisers. In 1978, Mosley became the official legal adviser to FOCA. In this role he and Marco Piccinini negotiated the first version of the Concorde Agreement, which settled a long-standing dispute between FOCA and the Fédération Internationale du Sport Automobile (FISA), a commission of the FIA and the then governing body of Formula One. Mosley was elected president of FISA in 1991 and became president of the FIA, FISA's parent body, in 1993.

Mosley identified his major achievement as FIA President as the promotion of the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP or Encap). He has also promoted increased safety and the use of green technologies in motor racing. In 2008, stories about his sex life appeared in the British press, along with unfounded allegations regarding Nazi connotations. Mosley successfully sued the newspaper that published the allegations and maintained his position as FIA president. He stood down at the end of his term in 2009 and was replaced by his preferred successor, Jean Todt.

From The Times:-

Max Rufus Mosley was born in London in April 1940, weeks before his father and mother, like many other active fascists in Phoney War Britain, were interned in Holloway prison on national security grounds. Sir Oswald Mosley had been a Labour minister and a member of parliament for the Conservative Party in the 1920s but had left mainstream politics to lead the British Union of Fascists in the 1930s, a movement associated with authoritarian policies, violence towards its opponents and Nazi-style antisemitism.

After the death of his first wife in 1933, Oswald had married Diana Mitford in 1936 in a ceremony in Germany at the home of Joseph Goebbels and attended by Adolf Hitler. After his birth there were unfounded rumours in the press that Mosley was the son of Hitler and Unity Mitford, one of Diana’s five sisters. Unity was obsessed with Hitler and died in 1948, nine years after shooting herself in the head with a pistol given to her, for her own protection, by Hitler.

The young Mosley started life being looked after by a governess and being allowed only occasional visits to his parents in prison...

...After his parents’ release in 1943 to considerable public outrage, the family moved between a succession of country houses in England where Mosley and his elder brother, Alexander, were tutored at home...

While at Oxford Mosley married Jean Taylor, the daughter of a policeman from Streatham in south London, who survives him. ...  the biggest price he paid was the loss of his eldest son, Alexander, who died of a drug overdose at the age of 39... In addition to Alexander they had another son, Patrick, who leads a private life.

Max Mosley, racing driver, lawyer and former president of the FIA, was born on April 13, 1940. He died of cancer on May 23, 2021, aged 81

Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi expect their first child

_. Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice, Mrs Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi [born 8 Aug, 1988], and Mr Edoardo Alessandro M. Mapelli Mozzi [born London 1 November, 1983], are expecting their first child in the Autumn on 2021.

Edo Mapelli Mozzi is the son of Count Alessandro [Alex] Mapelli Mozzi [born 1951], by his former wife the former Nicola Diana Burrows [born Feb 1956] [now Mrs Nikki Williams-Ellis, MBE].

Princess Beatrice is the elder daughter of HRH The Prince Andrew, Duke of York [born 19 February, 1960], by his former wife the former Sarah Margaret Ferguson [born 15 October, 1959].

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh joined the Duke of York at the scaled down Covid-secure wedding of their granddaughter and Edo Mapelli Mozzi at the Chapel Royal in Windsor Great Park, in July, 2020. Around twenty guests attended the wedding.

Edoardo's maternal grandmother, the former Susan Arnot Heath, married firstly, Robert David Burrows [Edo's grandfather], and married secondly, Lieutenant-Col Greville Wyndham Tufnell, CVO [born 1932], of the Grenadier Guards, who has close associations with the Royal Household.

Count Edoardo Alessandro M Mapelli Mozzi (known as Edo) was born in Westminster, 1st November, 1983, son of Count Alessandro (Alex) Mapelli Mozzi, and his former wife the former Nicola Diana [Nikki] Burrows. He has an elder sister Natalia Alice, born in 1981, wife of Mr Tod Yeomans.

His father, who was born in 1951, is a British Olympian, an Alpine skier, took part in several events at the 1972 Olympic Games.

Edo's grandfather was Count Gian Paolo Mapelli Mozzi (1922-80), Italian aristocrat, who married Gigliola Stoppani. Count Gian Paolo was a son of Count Luigi Mapelli Mozzi (1894-1948), who married Nobile Maria Mercedes Baroli.

Count Luigi was a son of Count Paolo Mapelli Mozzi (1854-1921), who married Enrichetta Tarsis dei Conti di Castel d'Agogna (1866-1941). Count Paolo was the son of Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi (1815-79) who married Nobile Ippolita Giulino dei Conti di Vialba.

The Mapelli Mozzi name came about from the marriage of Count Alessandro's father, Nobile Gerolamo Mapelli (1785-1842) with Angela Mozzi.

Edo's mother married as her second husband Christopher M.H. Shale, a British businessman and Conservative politician, friend of former prime minister David Cameron. Mr Shale died from natural causes at Glastonbury, in June, 2011. Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie and their parents the Duke and Duchess of York attended Mr Shale's funeral. Mrs Shale married thirdly, the sculptor David Williams-Ellis, a great nephew of Clough Williams-Ellis, the architect.

Mrs Williams-Ellis was awarded the MBE in David Cameron's resignation honours.

Edo has a half-brother, Albemarle Christopher M.H. Shale, ten years his junior.

The Mapelli Mozzi family have several connections to the British aristocracy. Edo's cousin, Edward Ankarcrona, son of Countess Margaretha Mapelli Mozzi, married in 2006, Lady Lucinda Savile, a daughter of the Earl and Countess of Mexborough.

Although he enjoys the title of "Count" he is a British subject and technically cannot use a foreign title in this country. Foreign styles and titles were confined to those who received a Royal Warrant from King George V in 1932.

It is reported that Edo has a son, Christopher Woolf "Wolfie", born in 2016, from a previous relationship.

The royal baby will be the 12th great-grandchild for Her Majesty the Queen:-

The 7th Baron Brownlow 1936-2021

_.The 7th Baron Brownlow, who died 15 May, 2021, aged 85, was a godson of the Duke of Windsor, and born in the duke's brief reign.

Edward John Peregrine Cust was born 25 March, 1936, son of the 6th Baron Brownlow [1899-1978], of Belton House, and his first wife the former Katherine Harriet Kinloch [died 1952]. The 6th Baron was a great friend of the future King Edward VIII, and was a central figure in the events leading to the abdication crisis, 1936.

Edward Cust, the 7th Baron, married 31 December, 1964, Shirlie Edith Yeaomans, daughter of John Paske Yeomans, of Manor Fram, Hill Croome, Upton-on-Severn, Worcestershire, by whom he had a son, the Hon Peregrine Edward Quintin Cust.

He succeeded to the peerage, and the family seat at Belton House, on his father's death, 28 July, 1978.

Belton House is a Grade I listed country house in the parish of Belton near Grantham in Lincolnshire, built between 1685 and 1688 by Sir John Brownlow, 3rd Baronet. It is surrounded by formal gardens and a series of avenues leading to follies within a larger wooded park. Belton has been described as a compilation of all that is finest of Carolean architecture, the only truly vernacular style of architecture that England had produced since the Tudor period. It is considered to be a complete example of a typical English country house. For about three centuries until 1984, Belton House was the seat successively of the Brownlow family, which had first acquired land in the area in the late 16th century, and of its heirs the Cust family (in 1815 created Earl Brownlow). Despite his great wealth Sir John Brownlow, 3rd Baronet, chose to build a comparatively modest house rather than one of the grand Baroque palaces being built by others at the time. The contemporary, if provincial, Carolean style was the selected choice of design. The new house was fitted with the latest innovations such as sash windows for the principal rooms, and more significantly, with completely separate areas for the staff. Successive generations made changes to the interior of the house which reflected their changing social position and tastes, yet the fabric and design of the house changed little. Following World War I the Custs, like many wealthy English families, were faced with mounting financial problems and finally in 1984 they donated the house, with most of its contents, to the National Trust, which now opens Belton to the public. It is in a good state of repair and is visited by many thousands of tourists each year.

The peerage now passes to his only son, the Hon Peregrine Cust [born 9 July, 1974].

_.Captain Alwyne Arthur Compton Farquharson, the 16th of Invercauld, has passed the chieftiain’s role to his 40-year-old great nephew Philip Farquharson on 1 May, 2021, his 102nd birthday.

Philip Farquharson was born in 1980 as Philip Compton, scion of the Marquesses of Northampton, son of James Compton [born 30 May, 1953], and his first wife the former Rebecca Wigan [born 1953], scion of the Wigan baronets, daughter of Sir Alan Wigan, 5th Baronet [1913-96].

Philip married in 2006, Lilibeth Violeta Darchart Muñoz, daughter of Pascual Darchart, and his wife Tulia Muñoz. The new 17th Chief of Invercauld is the father of two daughters, Heather [born 27 May, 2007], and Iona [born 19 February, 2013].

Alwyne Farquharson's war veteran’s service was celebrated with the playing of the pipes at a memorial stone at the home of the famous games, which was erected to celebrate his 70th year as chieftain in 2018.

Prior to the pandemic the Farquharson of Invercauld would travel north to Aberdeenshire every year for a number of engagements, including the annual gathering at Braemar, home of Braemar Castle, the seat of Clan Farquharson.

Pipers Lewis Stewart and Craig Mitchell and drummer Callum Mitchell play at the ceremony.

Pipe Major James Cooper from Ballater and District Pipe Band played Invercauld House, the tune traditionally piped for the chieftain’s arrival onto the field on games day at the socially distanced ceremony on Saturday.

It was followed by a short performance by young pipers Lewis Stewart and Craig Mitchell, and drummer Callum Mitchell from the 47th Culter Boys Brigade Pipe Band.

And though this year’s games have been cancelled due to coronavirus pandemic, Scott Fraser, vice-chairman of the Ballater Highland Games, said the ceremony provided a chance for organisers and supporters to raise a glass to both the outgoing and incoming chieftain.

Mr Fraser said: “The fact that he is 102 is remarkable in itself but the fact he has been our chieftain for 73 years and been at the games every year is just amazing.

“Philip will be seeing him tomorrow so he will see the videos of the event, which is very special.”

The 7th Baron Rossmore 1931-2021

_.Lord Rossmore, who died 4 May, 2021, aged 90, was the 7th Baron, in the Peerage of the UK.

William Warner Westenra was born 14 February, 1931, son of the 6th Baron Rossmore [1892-1958], and his wife the former Dolores Cecil Wilson [died 1981]; and succeeded to the peerage on his father's death, 17 Oct, 1958.

He married in 1982 (div __) Valerie Marion Tobin [born 1950], daughter of Brian Tobin, by whom he had a son, Benedict William Westenra [born 6 March, 1983], who now inherits the peerage.

Lord Rossmore obituary [Daily Telegraph]

Aristocratic photographer and aesthete who found himself in a high-profile love triangle with Marianne Faithfull and Mick Jagger

On the day the hunger striker Bobby Sands died in the Maze prison at the height of the Troubles in 1981, Paddy Rossmore’s house in Co Monaghan was burnt down by the IRA.

With his baronial title dating back seven generations, Rossmore represented to the Republicans the hated Anglo-Irish nobility whom they accused of having buttressed British oppression of Irish nationalism for centuries. While it may have been true of some of Rossmore’s forebears, who arrived in Ulster from Holland with William of Orange, the seventh baron was cut from cloth of a distinctly more anti-establishment stripe.

...In 1982 he married Valerie (née Tobin). The marriage ended in divorce. He is survived by their son, Benedict William Westenra, a music arranger and piano teacher whose pupils have included Sir Lenny Henry, and by his stepdaughter Charlotte Westenra, a theatre producer.

Paddy Rossmore was born William Warner Westenra in Rossmore Castle, Co Monaghan, in 1931, the son of Dolores (née Wilson) and William Westenra, the 6th Baron Rossmore, who had succeeded to the title a decade earlier. The Westenras were an old Dutch family who came from near the Hague and had inherited the Rossmore title via marriage into the family of Robert Cunninghame, a soldier who was created the first Baron by King George III, and died without a son.

...He succeeded as the 7th Baron Rossmore on the death of his father in 1958. The Gothic castle which had been the family seat since 1827 was abandoned after the Second World War because of dry rot, and the family moved into the dower house within the estate grounds. [which they sold] and in 1962 they took up residency in the gamekeeper’s lodge. Antiques from the original castle were also sold off, causing [...] the Daily Express [to mock] his folly in parting with an 18th-century German marquetry table for £205, which was sold on two months later for £6,000.

The castle was demolished in the mid-1970s after falling into disrepair. Rossmore lived in the lodge on his estate until the IRA burnt it down. After selling the estate he spent his final years living in London.

Lord (Paddy) Rossmore, photographer, was born on February 14, 1931. He died in his sleep on May 4, 2021, aged 90
