August Philip Hawke Brooksbank [born 2021]

_. The infant son of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank has been named August Philip Hawke.

Royal watchers have been on tip toe with excitement over the choice of names that Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank has selected for their infant son. Few suspected that the boy would be called August [no doubt to be known as 'Gus'].

Philip is in honour of the infant's great-grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, who will be 100, in June, and Hawke, after a Brooksbank ancestor. The Brooksbanks do tend to use surnames as Christian names. Jack has Stamp amongst his, as does his nephew, Wilfred.

August's 5 x great-grandfather was the Rev Edward Hawke Brooksbank [1789-1883], of Healaugh, Tadcaster, a country squire, and clergyman.

The baby is the first child for the princess, 30, and husband Jack Brooksbank, 34, and a first grandchild for the Duke of York and for Sarah Duchess of York. The infant is the ninth great-grandchild of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh.

Master Brooksbank [he has no courtesy title] who weighed in at 8lb 1oz, was born at 8:55am,  9 February, 2021, London's Portland Hospital, where Eugenie was born in 1990, and where Archie Mountbatten-Windsor was born in 2019.

The baby is eleventh in line of succession to the throne, following his mother, who is in tenth place, and displacing the Earl of Wessex, who drops to 12th position.

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank married at St George's Chapel, Windsor, 12 October, 2018.

The most recent birth in the Brooksbank family was last summer, when Amy Brooksbank, wife of Jack's younger brother, Thomas George, gave birth to a son, named Wilfred Stamp Ewing Brooksbank.

The family do tend to go for family surnames as christian names, and it's a tradition going back generations.

The trend for including what is usually a surname as a christian name is not common in the royal family. Prince Michael of Kent, born in 1942, has the name Franklin in honour of the wartime US president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and of course the Duke and Duchess of Sussex gave Archie the middle name of Harrison, at his birth in 2019. It is not known why Harry and Meghan selected Harrison.

Jack Christopher Stamp Brooksbank (born 3 May, 1986), scion of the Brooksbank baronets, is the elder son of Mr George Edward Hugh Brooksbank (b 8 Feb 1949), by his wife the former Nicola J Newton (b 1953).

HRH Princess Eugenie Victoria Helena of York (b 23 Mar, 1990), is the younger daughter of HRH The Duke of York, KG (born 19 Feb, 1960), by his former wife the former Sarah Margaret Ferguson [born 15 Oct, 1959], scion of the Fergusons of Dummer.

Viscount Stormont to wed

_. The engagement was announced 20 February, 2021, between William Philip David Mungo Murray, styled Viscount Stormont [born 1 November, 1988], son and heir of the Earl of Mansfield & Mansfield [born 17 Oct, 1956], of Scone Palace, Perthshire, and his wife the former Sophia Mary Veronica Ashbrooke [born 22 Jan, 1959], & Charlotte Nevling Clune, daughter of Mr Jonathan E. Charlotte Clune is destined to become chatelaine of Scone Palace. There can be few places of interest in Scotland as historically potent as Scone Palace. When you visit the Palace you are walking in the footsteps of Scotland’s ancient founding fathers, both pagan and Christian. It was an important religious gathering place of the Picts, it was the site of an early Christian church and it housed the Stone of Destiny.

Robert the Bruce was crowned at Scone in 1306, and the last coronation was of Charles II when he accepted the Scottish crown in 1651.

The place of coronation was called Caislean Credi, 'Hill of Credulity', which survives as the present Moot Hill.

Viscount Stormont's father is the 9th Earl of Mansfield, Alexander David Mungo Murray, who succeeded his father in 2015. He is married to Sophia, daughter of Biden Ashbrooke and Veronica Ashbrooke, nee Stourton. Lord Mansfield is also 14th Viscount Stormont and Lord Scone, 12th Lord Balvaird and Hereditary Keeper of Bruce’s Castle of Lochmaben.

In the 9th century, Kenneth MacAlpin established himself as the first true King of Scots. According to legend, he is said to have invited the Pictish King Drostan with all his nobles to banquet with him at Scone. While they were seated, and perhaps taking advantage of their gluttony of both drink and food, the Scots drew out the bolts supporting the boards, whereupon the Picts fell into the hollows below their benches. While caught in some strange contraption up to their knees, they were all slaughtered.

The last coronation in Scotland took place at Scone in 1651 when King Charles II was crowned King of Scots upon the Moot Hill. The Earls following the 3rd Earl all suffered imprisonment, mainly in consequence of their support of the Jacobite cause.

The 4th Viscount Stormont was briefly imprisoned for his part in a fatal duel. The 5th Viscount opposed the Treaty of Union and entertained James Stuart, the Old Pretender, at Scone Palace during the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion, for which he was imprisoned.

The 6th Viscount suffered the same fate when his sisters received the Young Pretender, Bonnie Prince Charlie, at Scone during the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion.

Lord Mowbray, Segrave and Stourton has announced his engagement

_. Lord Mowbray, Seagrave and Stourton, head of one of Britain's senior Roman Catholic dynasties, and holder of three ancient English peerages, has announced his engagment just weeks after succeeding his father.

James Charles Peter Stourton, the 28th Baron Mowbray, the 29th Baron Segrave, and the 25th Baron Stourton [born 12 Dec, 1991], has announced his engagement to Anna Maria R. Sparrow [born 1992], daughter of Mr Edward C.A. Sparrow [born 1953], of East Molesey, Surrey, and his wife the former Jane A.I. Jefferson [born 1954].

Lord Mowbray, Segrave and Stourton is the only son of the late Lord Mowbray, Segrave and Stourton [1953-2021], of Allerton Park, Knaresborough, and his wife the former Penelope Lucy [Nell] Brunet.

James succeeded to his father's peerages only three weeks ago when his father died tragically at his North Yorkshire home following a fall.

The family has a fascinating history. The Lords Mowbray, Segrave and Stourton claimed unsuccessfully in 1912 the ancient Earldom of Norfolk [1312] to which he was the senior co-heir. The Norfolk earldom had originally been bestowed on the Bigod family. Roger Bigod surrendered the earldom to the King in 1302 and ten years later it had been regranted to Thomas of Brotherton, and the success of this claim depended on the validity of the surrender, as it was the regranted peerage which was under claim. He failed in his case, as it was held (in 1906) that the surrender of 1302 was invalid, and, as "The Complete Peerage" states: "the decision in the case involved a denial of the existence of the earldom in Thomas of Brotherton and his issue." The barony of Stourton which was created by patent in 1448, has existed continuously in the male line since that date. The baronies of Mowbray and Segrave were a different case. The first Lord Mowbray received a writ of summons to Shrewsbury in 1283 and other later summonses to undoubted Parliaments. The first Lord Segrave was also at Shrewsbury, but was also summoned to Parliament in 1295. The daughter of the 4th Lord Segrave married the fourth Lord Mowbray, and the titles since then have been held together. The baronies came through the Mowbrays, Dukes of Norfolk, to the Howards, Dukes of Norfolk, and so to 1777, when they fell into abeyance between the two daughters of Philip Howard, brother of the 9th Duke of Norfolk. One married the 16th Lord Stourton and the other the 9th Lord Petre. In 1877 the 20th Lord Stourton applied for the termination of the abeyance, and the case was decided in his favour.

The future Lady Mowbray, Segrave and Stourton has six siblings - Tamsin [born 1980], Benedicte [born 1982], Christopher [born 1985], Charles [born 1989], and twins Edward and Catriona [born 1995]

Second baby for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex

_. It has been announced that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expecting their second child.

Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex (nee [Rachel] Meghan Markle, born 4 Aug, 1981), is the wife of HRH The Duke of Sussex, KCVO (born 15 Sept, 1984), younger son of HRH The Prince of Wales.

The Duchess of Sussex gave birth to their first child, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, at the Portland Hospital, London, 6 May, 2019.

Archie, the fourth grandchild of the Prince of Wales, follows his grandfather, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis and his father, in line of succession to the throne.

The infant will be the eleventh great-grandchild of the Queen, and will not be born a prince or princess with the qualification of Royal Highness. . That rank is reserved only for the children and male line grandchildren of the Sovereign.

In a complete break with tradition and with the laws governing peerages, and the children of peers, it was announced in 2019 that Archie would not use a courtesy title associated with the Dukedom of Sussex.

It was expected that Archie would be styled as Earl of Dumbarton, which is Prince Harry's earldom, created with the Dukedom of Sussex and Barony of Kilkeel in May, 2018.

A Palace statement announced that no courtesy titles would be borne by the seventh in line to the throne, and that he will be known as Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.

The eldest son of a duke by custom uses one of his father's peerages as a 'courtesy' title, but like his younger brothers he is also 'Lord' [Christian name] Surname, and was born so, and will be recorded as such at the College of Arms. Harry and Meghan's second child will be born Lord or Lady [Christian name] Mountbatten-Windsor. This courtesy title will not be granted or bestowed by the Queen at birth as it is an automatic qualification.

In cases where a person succeeds to a peerage from a cousin or relation other than a parent then the siblings of that new peer do not automatically assume courtesy titles, and apply to the Crown to be so granted. Claims are reviewed and when approved the Crown Office issues the following:

'Her Majesty has been graciously pleased by Warrant under her Royal Signet and Sign Manual bearing the date …. to ordain and declare that …..(name of person seeking courtesy title) .. shall henceforth have, hold and enjoy the same title, rank, place, pre-eminence and precedence as the children of a ….Duke/Marquess/Earl/Viscount/Baron... as would have been due to them had their father … (his name)… succeeded to the title and dignity of Duke of …….and to command that the said Royal Concession and Declaration be recorded in Her Majesty's College of Arms.'

Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, being born the son of Duke, was born Lord Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor as a legal entity.

The Queen, Head of the Royal House of Windsor, declared by Letters Patent in 1960 that her male line descendants who were not Royal Highnesses or princes or princesses would have the surname Mountbatten-Windsor, to complement her husband, Prince Philip, who had assumed the surname of Mountbatten when he was naturalized a British subject in 1947.

Harry and Meghan's children now share this surname with the children of the Earl and Countess of Wessex, who do not use the royal style and title of HRH.

The decision of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to deny their son a courtesy title is I think unique in the annals of the peerage.

Several peers, or relatives of peers with courtesy titles, do decide not to be so styled. And of course peerages can be disclaimed, within a time limit, under the terms of the Peerages Act 1963. Peers in the Peerage of Ireland and baronets cannot disclaim under the terms of the act.

But how many peers announce that their offspring will not enjoy the courtesy titles associated with their peerages?

Under the terms of the Letters Patent creating Harry's dukedom, on 19 May, 2018, the descent of the title is vested in his heirs male 'lawfully begotten'. Archie is destined, should he survive his father, to succeed as 2nd Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel.

If the second child of the Sussexes is a boy then he, like his brother, will be in remainder to the three peerages held by Prince Harry. A daughter cannot inherit the dukedom, earldom or barony.

The principal families descended from the house of Glengarry were the McDonells of Barrisdale, in Knoydart, Greenfield, and Lundie.

The MacDonells of Glengarry claim descent from Donald, one of the five sons of Ranald (d.1386), chief of Clanranald. The parents of Ranald (d.1386) were John of Islay, Lord of the Isles, 6th chief of Clan Donald and Ami MacRuairi the heiress to the chiefship of Clanranald.

The two distant relatives, John of Islay and Amie MacRuairi both descend from Ranald (d.1207), son of King Somerled. They married and their son Ranald (d.1386) became chief of Clanranald. Ranald was also expected to succeed his father, John of Islay as chief of Clan Donald. However John of Islay later married Margaret Stewart, the daughter of Robert II of Scotland. They had a son called Donald who became the next chief of Clan Donald.

Ranald (d.1386) had five sons. One of these five, Alan (d.1430) succeeded him as chief. Another of the five sons, Donald (d.1420) became chief of the MacDonells of Glengarry.

Eugenie and Jack's son: could he be a York?

_. Royal watchers are on tip toe with excitement over the choice of names that Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank has selected for their infant son. I have delved into the branches of Jack's family tree to find some clues.

One of Jack's middle names is Stamp. His late grandfather, Stamp Godfrey Brooksbank, who died four years ago was named Stamp in honour of an ancestor of that surname. Interestingly, Stamp Brooksbank was the son of an Edward York Brooksbank, a North Yorkshire landowner, who died as the result of a car accident in 1935. Edward York Brooksbank was named after his grandmother, Lucy Mary York, a member of a landed gentry family, seated at Wighill Park, North Yorkshire.

If Eugenie and Jack were to give their son the middle of name of York it would be a nod to both sides of the family. Eugenie, born Princess Eugenie of York, and her elder sister Beatrice cannot succeed to the title Duke of York as it can only descend to heirs male. The use of the name York would keep the name alive.

Jack's great-grandfather Major the Hon Sir John Spencer Coke [1880-1957]. I do not think for one minute that we are about to see a Spencer Brooksbank. That would be a slight to cousins William and Harry.

Scrope/Staveley engagement

__. The engagement was announced 10 February, 2021, uniting two Yorkshire landed dynasties. Edward Ralph William Scrope [born 1989], is set to marry Miranda Alice Staveley [born 1988].

Edward is the younger son of Major Peter Geoffrey Scrope [born 1955], of Great Ayton, North Yorkshire, and his wife the former Penelope Eldrydd Davies [born 1955].

Miranda is the youngest daughter of Richard Staveley [born 1955], of Warnford, Hampshire, and Mrs Nicola Anne Staveley [born 1956, nee Cornell], of East Meon, Hampshire.

The Scrope family (pronounced "Scroop") are seated at Danby, the family's 1,500-acre estate in North Yorkshire. The family descend from one of Edward the Confessor's Norman favourites, and were thus already settled in England at the time of the Conquest. The family motto, Devant si je puis (Forward if I am able), is a sardonic allusion to their name, which means "crab" in the Norman dialect. Establishing themselves in Wensleydale in the 12th century, Scropes distinguished themselves on the Crusades and in the Hundred Years War, were regularly summoned to medieval parliaments as barons, and have produced five Garter knights, and an Archbishop of York.

The Scrope coat of arms, Azure a bend or, was one of the earliest to be adopted and, to amateurs of heraldry, is a celebrated curiosity. Campaigning in Scotland in 1385, Richard, Lord Scrope of Bolton, was aghast to see it borne by a fellow knight, Sir Richard le Grosvenor. The matter was tried in the Court of Chivalry – John of Gaunt, Harry "Hotspur" and Geoffrey Chaucer all giving evidence on Scrope's behalf.

Depositions were conveniently heard in York Minster, the family burial place, where the Scrope arms were prominently on display, as they were – in glass, alabaster and stone – in more than 40 other churches in Yorkshire. The court's decision in favour of Scrope has long rankled with the Grosvenors. Hugh Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster, was to name his famous racehorse (the 1880 Derby winner) Bend Or, and it was also his nickname for his grandson, the 2nd Duke, whose chestnut hair reminded him of the horse. For their part, the proud Scropes sport a distinctive family tie, based on their arms, of blue with diagonal gold stripes.

Ed Scrope descends from a junior branch of the family which succeeded to the headship in 1630. Christopher Scrope was by that time a convicted recusant and knew better than to press his claim to the titles and estates. Christopher's son seated himself at Danby-on-Yore, in the heart of the Scrope country, which the family had acquired through an heiress in 1576. Largely rebuilt in the 16th century, Danby Hall incorporates one of the most southerly examples of a peel tower, dating from the early 14th century. A small chamber at the top of the "old Tower" served as a chapel, the only place of Catholic worship for miles around. In the early 1800s a capacious priest's hole was rediscovered at the back of a fireplace. Generations of Scropes were barred, as Catholics, from public office. Their sons were sent abroad, with false identities, for their schooling. Forbidden to own any horse worth more than £5, they depended on kindly Protestant neighbours to hold them in their own names. The Scrope who bred Danby Cade, a famous 18th-century racehorse, was not his legal owner. "Penal times" ended with the passing of the Catholic Relief Act in 1829. Scrope of Danby petitioned in vain for the earldom of Wiltshire, but retained the heraldic supporters (a pair of Cornish choughs) that the family claim by prescription – supporters being an honour usually afforded only to peers and knights grand cross under Royal Warrant.
