_. Lord Spicer, PC, life Baron, Conservative peer, died 29 May, 2019. He was 76.

William Michael Hardy Spicer was born 22 January, 1943, son of Brigadier L. Hardy Spicer, and was educated at Wellington College and Emmanuel College, Cambridge.

He was Conservative MP for South Worcestershire, Feb 1974-1997, and for West Worcestershire, 1997-2010; served as a Junior Minister in the Thatcher Administration; was Chairman of the 1922 Committee from 2001-2010.

Spicer was knighted in 1996, and created a life peer on leaving the Commons, taking the title Baron Spicer.

He married in 1967, Patricia Anne Hunter, by whom he had issue, a son and two daughters.

Hon Sir David Sieff 1939-2019

_. The Hon Sir David Sieff, who died 27 May, 2019, aged 80, banker and company director, was a director of Marks & Spencer, and was descended from Michael Marks, co-founder of the company.

He was born 22 March, 1939, son of Marcus Sieff [1913-2001], a life peer as Baron Sieff of Brimpton, who was a grandson maternally of Michael Marks. His mother was the former Rosalie Fromson, divorced from Marcus Sieff in 1947.

David Sieff was a Director of Marks and Spencer for over 20 years and chairman of FIBI Bank [UK] Ltd. He was knighted in 1999.

He married in 1962, Jennifer Walton, by whom he had two sons, Simon and Jonathan.

The funeral is at Golders Green Crematorium, Monday 3 June, 2019.

She was born in 1937, a daughter of the Hon Sir Maurice Richard Bridgeman, KBE [1904-80], by his wife the former Diana Mary Erica Wilson; married in 1960, Peter Baring [born 1935], sometime head of Barings Bank, scion of the Barons Revelstoke, son of Francis Anthony Baring [1909-40], by his wife the former Lady Rose McDonnell, DCVO[1909-93], scion of the Earls of Antrim, and Woman of the Bedchamber to HM The Queen, 1953-93, by whom she had three sons.

The funeral takes place at St John's Church, Notting Hill, 18 June, 2019.

She was the former Delia Reid, born 25 July, 1935, daughter of Admiral Sir John Reid [1903-73], by his wife the former Jean Dundas [1909-71], and was a great-granddaughter of the 12th Earl of Home.

Sher married 5 April, 1956, David Montgomery, who succeeded to the family baronetcy, 28 January, 1964. She was the mother of six children, 2 sons and 4 daughters.

A Thanksgiving Service is to take place at St Ninian's Cathedral, Perth, 26 June, 2019.

He was born in 1931, son of Major-Gen Edward Temple Leigh Gurdon, CB, CBE, MC [1896-1959], of Burgh House, Suffolk, by his wife the former Elizabeth Madeleine Wilson [1901-67]; married 1958, Gillian Margaret Thomson, by whom he had issue. His daughter, Madeleine Astrid, married, as his third wife, 1991, Andrew Lloyd Webber, the composer, later created a life peer as Baron Lloyd-Webber.

Thomas, a grandson of a Speaker of the House of Commons, is the son of the Hon Bernard Weatherill, QC (b 1951) & Mrs Sally Weatherill, both of London, & Lauren is a daughter of Dr Timothy Coombs, of Cape Town, South Africa, and Mrs Jane Coombs, of Churchill, Oxfordshire.

Thomas Weatherill is a grandson of the late life peer the Baron Weatherill (1920-2007), who was Bernard Weatherill, MP was Speaker of the House of Commons, 1983-92.

The Baron Moore of Lower Marsh, PC 1937-2019

_. The Lord Moore of Lower Marsh, PC, former Conservative MP and government minister in the administration of Margaret Thatcher, died 20 May, 2019. He was 81.

John Edward Michael Moore was born 26 November, 1937; served as Conservative MP for Croydon Central from February, 1974 until 1992; was briefly Secretary of State for Health & Social Services, 1987-88; and prior to that had served in the Thatcher administration as Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Minister of Transport; retired from the House of Commons in 1992 and was created a life peer taking the title Baron Moore of Lower Marsh, of Lower Marsh in the London Borough of Lambeth.

He was predeceased by his wife Sheila, and leaves three children, Stephanie, Martin and Richard.

William Roger Clotworthy Moore was born 17 May, 1927, son of Sir William Moore, 2nd Baronet, and Ethel Cockburn Gordon [died 1973]; succeeded his father in the baronetcy, 1978; married in 1954, Gillian, daughter of John Brown, of County Antrim; one son, one daughter. Educated at Marlborough and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst; Lieut, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 1945; Major, North Irish Horse, 1956; High Sheriff of County Antrim, 1964;  DL County Antrim, 1990.

He is succeeded by his son Richard William Moore, born 8 May, 1955.

Sir Timothy Kitson 1931-2019

_. Sir Timothy Kitson, who died 18 May, 2019, aged 88, was Conservative MP for Richmond, North Yorkshire 1959-83, and was Parliamentary Private Secretary to Edward Heath, as Prime Minister 1970-74, and as Leader of the Opposition 1974-75.

Timothy Peter Geoffrey Kitson was born 28 January, 1931, the son of Geoffrey and Kathleen Kitson, and was educated at Charterhouse and the Royal Agricultural College Cirencester.

Elected MP for Richmond in 1959, he was an Opposition Whip 1967-70. Kitson was knighted in 1974.

He married in 1959, Diana Mary Fattorini, daughter of Edward William Fattorini, by his wife the former Edith Hannah Rhodes, and by her he had one son and two daughters.

Polly Marchioness of Lansdowne 1937-2019

_. Polly Marchioness of Lansdowne, who died 11 May, 2019, in Amsterdam, was the former wife of the 8th Marquess of Lansdowne, of Bowood, Calne. She was 82.

She was born the Hon Selina Polly Dawson Eccles, 18 January, 1937, daughter of David Eccles, later 1st Viacount Eccles [1904-99] by his wife the Hon Sybil Frances Dawson [1904-77].

Always known as Polly. Her father was Minister of Works at the time of the Coronation, for which he was appointed KCVO. He was created a viscount in 1964, one of the last so created.

Polly's maternal grandfather was Bertrand Dawson, 1st Viscount Dawson of Penn [1865-1945], physician to King George V, who administered the fatal dose of morphine to the dying monarch in January, 1936.

She married firstly, 1 June, 1962 [divorced 1969], Robin Andrew Duthac Carnegie [1937-2000], scion of the Earls of Southesk (now Dukes of Fife); married secondly, 22 Dec, 1969, as his second wife, the 8th Marquess of Lansdowne [1912-99], and became chatelaine of Bowood House, at Calne, Wiltshire. This marriage ended in divorce in 1978.

The Marchioness leaves a son, Andrew Carnegie, from her first marriage. He was born in 1963.

Following a private cremation in Amsterdam, the funeral will take place in London at a later date.

Lady Jane was born 25 January, 1934, second daughter of the 12th Earl Waldegrave [1905-95] by his wife the former Mary Hermione Grenfell [1909-95], and was a sister of Lady Susan Hussey, long serving Lady in Waiting to the Queen.

 She m 1stly 20 Feb 1954 (div 1977) as his 1st wife the 4th Baron Strathcona & Mount Royal (1923-2018), by whom she had two sons and four daughters; married secondly, 22 Sept, 1977 [div 1979] Duncan McIntosh, OBE, AFC. Following her second divorce she reverted to using her first husband's surname.

Lady Jane's elder son is the 5th Baron Strathcona & Mount Royal.

The birth of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor

_. Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex (nee [Rachel] Meghan Markle, born 4 Aug, 1981), wife of HRH The Duke of Sussex, KCVO (born 15 Sept, 1984), gave birth to a son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, at the Portland Hospital, London, 6 May, 2019.

Archie is the fourth grandchild of the Prince of Wales, and follows his grandfather, the Duke of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis and his father, in line of succession to the throne. His birth pushes the Duke of York to eighth position.

As a great-grandchild of the Sovereign in the male line Archie was not born a Royal Highness or a Prince. That rank is reserved for the children and male line grandchildren.

In a complete break with tradition and with the laws governing peerages, and the children of peers, it has been announced that the infant will not use a courtesy title associated with the Dukedom of Sussex.

It was expected that Archie would be styled as Earl of Dumbarton, which is Prince Harry's earldom, created with the Dukedom of Sussex and Barony of Kilkeel in May, 2018.

A Palace statement announced that no courtesy titles would be borne by the seventh in line to the throne, and that he will be known as Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.

It will be interesting to see how the College of Arms handles the case of 'Master' Mountbatten-Windsor. The eldest son of a duke by custom uses one of his father's peerages as a 'courtesy' title, but like his younger brothers he is also 'Lord' [Christian name] Surname, and was born so, and will be recorded as such at the College of Arms.

In cases where a person succeeds to a peerage from a cousin or relation other than a parent then the siblings of that new peer do not automatically assume courtesy titles, and apply to the Crown to be so granted. Claims are reviewed and when approved the Crown Office issues the following:

'Her Majesty has been graciously pleased by Warrant under her Royal Signet and Sign Manual bearing the date …. to ordain and declare that …..(name of person seeking courtesy title) .. shall henceforth have, hold and enjoy the same title, rank, place, pre-eminence and precedence as the children of a ….Duke/Marquess/Earl/Viscount/Baron... as would have been due to them had their father … (his name)… succeeded to the title and dignity of Duke of …….and to command that the said Royal Concession and Declaration be recorded in Her Majesty's College of Arms.'

Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, being born the son of Duke, was born Lord Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor as a legal entity. The 'courtesy' title Earl of Dumbarton may have been declared withheld or not to be used, but on legal documents will the Queen's latest great-grandchild be named as Lord Archie? My mole in the College of Arms certainly thinks so.

The Queen, Head of the Royal House of Windsor, declared by Letters Patent in 1960 that her male line descendants who were not Royal Highnesses or princes or princesses would have the surname Mountbatten-Windsor, to complement her husband, Prince Philip, who had assumed the surname of Mountbatten when he was naturalized a British subject in 1947.

Harry and Meghan's children now share this surname with the children of the Earl and Countess of Wessex, who do not use the royal style and title of HRH.

The decision of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to deny their son a courtesy title is I think unique in the annals of the peerage.

Several peers, or relatives of peers with courtesy titles, do decide not to be so styled. And of course peerages can be disclaimed, within a time limit, under the terms of the Peerages Act 1963. Peers in the Peerage of Ireland and baronets cannot disclaim under the terms of the act.

But how many peers announce that their offspring will not enjoy the courtesy titles associated with their peerages?

Under the terms of the Letters Patent creating Harry's dukedom, on 19 May, 2018, the descent of the title is vested in his heirs male 'lawfully begotten'. Archie is destined, should he survive his father, to succeed as 2nd Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel.

Young Archie has a kinsman of the same name. The Duke of Sussex's cousin, the Hon Hugh Roche, and his wife Pippa, have a son Archie Edmund, 11.

_. Michael Anson, who died 5 May, 2019, on his 82nd birthday, was a scion of the Earls of Lichfield, and a Page of Honour to King George VI and to Queen Elizabeth II.

He was born 5 May, 1937, son of Major Hugo Edward Anson [1908-91], by his wife the former Elizabeth Campbell [who died 1997], daughter of Capt Sir Harold Campbell, KCVO [1888-1969], private secretary to the Duke of York [afterwards King George VI] 1933-36, Deputy Comptroller and Equerry, 1936; Extra Equerry to Queen Elizabeth II 1954-69, Groom of the Robes to George VI, 1937-52, and to the Queen 1952-54.

His paternal grandfather, the Hon Claud Anson [1864-1947] married Lady Clodagh Beresford [1879-1957], daughter of the 5th Marquess of Waterford; and his great-grandfather was the 2nd Earl of Lichfield [1825-92].

Michael Anson served as a Page of Honour to King George VI, 1950-52, and to Queen Elizabeth II, 1952-53.

He married 10 Aug 1963, Claire Elizabeth Seymour Morris, daughter of Lieut-Col Frederick Arthur Morris, by whom he had issue, three daughters, Alexandra, Josephine and Catherine.

A Service of Thanksgiving will be held at the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Northleach, 23 May, 2019.

Thomas Edward Brodie Sopwith 1932-2019

Thomas Edward Brodie "Tommy" Sopwith, who died at Basingstoke, 4 May, 2019, aged 86, was the son of aviation pioneer Sir Thomas Sopwith (1888-1989) (the creator of Hawker Siddeley).

He was born 15 November, 1932, son of Sir Thomas Octave Murdoch Sopwith, CBE, by his second wife the former Phyllis Brodie, and was educated at Stowe. His father's first wife had been Beatrice Hore-Ruthven, a daughter of Lord Ruthven of Gowrie.

Tommy was the classic 1960s eligible bachelor: guards officer, offshore power boat and saloon car champion. He founded a Brighton based car distributorship named after his father’s America’s Cup J-Class yacht “Endeavour”. This was also the name used for his helicopter owning company: Endeavour Aviation.
In the 1980’s he was a partner in European Helicopters of Denham that was co-founded with ex McAlpine Heli’s MD Robin Keith, and Lynton Group.
The company was formed to carry out corporate helicopter rebuilding, maintenance, sales and consultancy but there was some controversy when it sought to win the Aerospatiale helicopter distributorship away from McAlpine Helicopters Ltd. McAlpine sued and won damages and an injunction preventing European Helicopters from approaching Aerospatiale. In August 1990 Lynton Group acquired remaining 60% of EHL's equity from the other partners. European was later absorbed into Premiair along with McAlpine’s businesses not associated with the Eurocopter sales business.
His first wife was killed in the crash of Bell 47G G-BBVP on 20 March, 1975 . His second marriage was to former Olympic skier Gina Hawthorn. He leaves two children, Sam and Bean.

Nancy Emma Millicent Crofton [born 2019]

_. Baroness Sophie Alexandra von Maltzahn [born 1981], wife of Henry Morgan Crofton [born 1979] scion of the Crofton baronets, gave birth to a daughter, Nancy Emma Millicent, 4 May, 2019.

Henry Crofton is the son and heir of Major Sir Edward Crofton, 9th Baronet [born 1945], by his wife the former Emma Victoria Mildred Dashwood [born 1955], daughter of Sir Henry Dashwood, 8th Baronet.

Sophie von Maltzahn is a daughter of Baron Emmerich [Imre] von Maltzahn, by his wife the former Lydia Ann Smith [born 1948].
