The 8th Earl Cadogan, KBE, DL, who died 11 June, 2023, aged 86, was a billionaire landowner, proprietor of the Cadogan Estates which administers extensive landholdings in Chelsea, a wealthy part of London, including much of Sloane Street and Cadogan Hall. He was a former chairman of Chelsea Football Club.
He was the second richest UK-based peer behind the current Duke of Westminster. Lord Cadogan was a first cousin of HH The Aga Khan.
The 8th Earl Cadogan could take a proprietorial stroll from Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge down Sloane Street to Chelsea and the Kings Road without ever having to step off his own land.
From the Daily Telegraph: "His property empire covered 93 acres of one of London’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, comprising more than 3,000 houses and apartments, 300 shops, 500,000 square feet of office space, nine hotels, seven schools, five embassies and a similar number of churches. Streets, squares and halls all bore his name on the Cadogan estate, which had been in the family for 300 years. It was once said that “if something doesn’t move in Chelsea, the Cadogan family probably owns it”.
Lord Cadogan was the 8th Earl (Peerage of Gt Britain, cr 1800), Viscount Chelsea (also in the Peerage of Gt Britain, 1800), the 10th Baron Cadogan (Peerage of Gt Britain, cr 1718), and the 6th Baron Oakley (Peerage of the UK, cr 1831).
Charles Gerald John Cadogan was born 24 March, 1937, son of the 7th Earl Cadogan (1914-1997), and his 1st wife the Hon Primrose Lilian Yarde-Buller (who died 6 Dec, 1970), scion of the Barons Churston.
He succeeded to the family honours on the death of his father, 4 July, 1997. He was appointed KBE in 2012.
Earl Cadogan was thrice wed; firstly, 6 July, 1963, to Lady Philippa Dorothy Bluet Wallop (1937-1984), daughter of the 9th Earl of Portsmouth (1898-1984), and his 2nd wife the former Bridget Cery Crohan (d 15 Dec, 1979); married 2ndly, 1989 (div 1994), Jennifer Jane Greig Rae (later Mrs Sebastian de Ferranti), daughter of J.E. Keith Rae; married 3rdly, 25 July, 1994, Dorothy Ann Shipsey, MVO, a former matron of the King Edward VII Hospital for Officers, second daughter of Dr W.E. Shipsey.
Lord Cadogan leaves issue from his first marriage, two sons, Edward Charles Cadogan, styled Viscount Chelsea (born 10 May, 1966), and the Hon William Cadogan (born 9 Nov, 1973), and a daughter Lady Anna-Karina Cadogan (b 4 Feb, 1964). The elder son succeeds as 9th Earl Cadogan.
