Major Sir Shane Blewitt, GCVO 1935-2022

 Major Sir Shane Blewitt, GCVO, who died suddenly, 15 May, 2022, aged 87, was a courtier, a former senior member of the Queen's Household.

Sir Shane, an Irish Guards officer, entered royal service in 1975 when appointed Assistant Keeper of the Privy Purse, Duchy of Lancaster, a post he held for 10 years. He then served as Deputy Keeper of the Privy Purse from 1985-88; and was Receiver-General of the Duchy of Lancaster, 1988-96. He was Keeper of the Privy Purse and Treasurer to the Queen, 1988-96. From 1996 he served as an Extra Equerry to Her Majesty.

Shane Gabriel Basil Blewitt was born 25 March, 1935, son of Colonel Basil Blewitt [1904-72], of Willaston, Cheshire, and his wife the former Claire Kathleen Nowlan [1905-2002], and educated at Ampleforth.

He married 16 June, 1969, Mrs [Monica] Juliet Morrogh Bernard [1939-2020], widow of  Maj John Morrogh Bernard, Irish Guards, and a scion of a landed gentry family, the eldest of five daughters of Major Robert Henry Calvert, of Picts House, Horsham, Sussex, by his wife the former Monica Buxton, scion of the Buxton baronets. Juliet Calvert was a kinswoman of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, who is of Calvert descent. [The duchess's great grandmother, Lady Ashcombe, wife of of the 2nd Baron Ashcombe was nee Maud Calvert.] Lady Blewitt died 30 March, 2020, aged 81.

He was appointed LVO in 1981, CVO in 1987, KCVO in 1989, and advanced to GCVO in 1996.

Sir Shane leaves a son, Piers, and a daughter, Davina, and a step-son and step-daughter, Alexander and Katherine Morrogh Bernard.

Sir Shane Blewitt was a member of the Council of King Edward VII Hospital for Officers.
