Duke of Roxburghe engaged

_. The engagement was announced 30 January, 2021, between the 11th Duke of Roxburghe [born 18 February, 1981], of Floors Castle, Kelso, elder son of the late 10th Duke of Roxburghe [1954-2019], and his first wife the former Lady Jane Meriel Grosvenor [born 8 Feb, 1953], and Miss Annabel Green [born 1989], daughter of the late Mr Ian Green and Mrs Patrick Quirk.

South African born Annabel Green will become chatelaine of the magnificent Floors Castle, the largest inhabited castle in Scotland and family home of the Dukes of Roxburghe. The castle was built for the 1st Duke of Roxburghe in 1721.

One of Britain's most eligible bachelors,  the duke is a close Army friend of the Duke of Sussex. He inherited his father's title and £100m estate in 2019. The duke, when Marquis of Bowmont, was also once fined for riding the Tyne and Wear Metro without a £1 ticket, but chose to pay the £10 fine rather than end up on 'loser posters' put up around the city.

Charles Roxburghe attended Eton College before following in his father's footsteps by going to Sandhurst after which he served during the Iraq War. Rather than sitting around 'like a hawk' however, Charles runs his own chauffeur business, Capstar, which retrains wounded former servicemen and women, according to the Evening Standard.

It will be the second marriage for Charles Robert George Innes-Ker, 11th Duke of Roxburghe. He married firstly, 22 July, 2011, the Hon Charlotte Susanna Aitken [born 1982], daughter of the 3rd Baron Beaverbrook [born 29 Dec, 1951]. This childless marriage ended in divorce in 2013, and Charlotte is now Mrs Francesco Bellasi.

The Duke of Roxburghe succeeded to the title on his father's death, 29 Aug, 2019. The 10th duke died from cancer aged 64. The Duke is also Marquess of Bowmont and Cessford, Earl of Roxburghe, Earl of Kelso, Earl Innes, Viscount Broxmouth, Lord Roxburghe, Lord Ker of Cessford and Cavertoun, Lord Ker of Cessford and Overton, and is the premier Baronet of Nova Scotia, and Chief of the Clan Innes.

Charles Roxburghe's mother, Lady Jane, is a daughter of the 5th Duke of Westminster [1910-79], and is now the wife of Edward William Dawnay [born 10 Feb, 1950], scion of the Viscounts Downe.

The Duke of Roxburghe has a brother, and current heir presumptive, Lord Edward Innes-Ker [born 2 Feb, 1984], and a sister Rosanagh [born 16 Jan, 1979], a bridesmaid at the wedding of HRH The Duke of York and Miss Sarah Ferguson, in 1986 [it was at a  Floors Castle house party where Prince Andrew is said to have proposed to Sarah]. Rosanagh is Viscountess Grimston, wife of the Earl of Verulam's son and heir, Viscount Grimston.

The duke also has two half-siblings, Lady Isabella Innes-Ker [born 7 Sept, 1994], and Lord George Innes-Ker [born 20 Nov, 1996], from his father's second marriage to Virginia Wynn-Williams.

Sarah Viscountess Allendale 1928-2021

_. Sarah, Viscountess Allendale, who died 10 January, 2021, aged 92, was the wife of the late 3rd Viscount Allendale [1922-2002].

She was born Sarah Field Ismay, 16 May, 1928, daughter of General Hastings Lionel 'Pug' Ismay, the 1st Baron Ismay, KG, GCB, CH, DSO, PC, DL [1887-1965], and his wife the former Laura Kathleen Clegg.

Her father was a British Indian Army officer and diplomat, remembered primarily for his role as Sir Winston Churchill's chief military assistant during the Second World War and his service as the first Secretary General of NATO from 1952 to 1957.

In her late teens she met the then Hon 'Wenty' Beaumont, the ADC to the Viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten, [her father was Mountbatten's chief of staff], and in August 1947, she and her future husband accompanied the Viceregal party to Simla on holiday. The young couple then left by train to return to Delhi, thence to make their way back to England.

According to Lord Ismay's vivid memoir: "When they boarded the train, Wenty's Muslim servant showed signs of panic and was given permission to travel in their carriage. Nothing unusual happened until, at Sonepat station, about 20 miles from Delhi, a bomb was exploded on the platform. This was apparently the preconcerted signal for a general attack on all Muslim passengers. Men, women and children were pulled out of the train by their Hindu fellow travellers and butchered in the most brutal manner. "At this point, Wenty hid the servant under the seat and piled suitcases in front of him. A little later, two well-dressed and seemingly well-educated Hindus presented themselves at the door of his carriage and demanded the right to search for a Muslim who was believed to be with them. Wenty indignantly refused, and the intruders took themselves off. "Maybe they were impressed by Wenty's ADC arm-band, or by the two revolvers which 19 year-old Sarah and Wenty Beaumont were flourishing. The servant, who had fainted from fright and kept a deathly silence, was the only Muslim to arrive at Delhi."

Sarah Ismay married the Hon Wentworth Beaumont, 11 February, 1948. The ceremony took place at St Margaret's, Westminster. The Queen [later Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, a kinswoman of the Beaumonts], Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret attended. The Royal party and guests later attended the wedding breakfast at Claridge's.

The Hon Wentworth Beaumont, who succeeded his father in December, 1956, as 3rd Viscount Allendale, had been a childhood playmate of the York princesses, the Allendales being neighbours of the Duke and Duchess of York when in residence at Piccadilly. Lord Allendale was a popular and respected figure of the Turf, and Steward of the Jockey Club.

The marriage of Lord and Lady Allendale ended in divorce in the 1980s, and the 3rd Viscount died 27 December, 2002.

Viscountess Allendale leaves issue, three sons, Wentworth, the 4th Viscount, born 13 November, 1948, and the Hon Mark Beaumont and the Hon Charles Beaumont.

Lord Mowbray, Segrave & Stourton 1953-2021

_. The Lord Mowbray, Segrave and Stourton died 7 January, 2021, aged 67 following a fall at his Yorkshire home.

His peerages are three of the oldest on the Roll of the House of Lords. He was the 27th Baron Mowbray [created by Writ of Summons in 1283], 28th Baron Segrave [created by Writ of Summons, 24 June, 1295], and 24th Baron Stourton [created by Letters Patent, 13 May, 1448].

The Lords Mowbray, Segrave and Stourton claimed unsuccessfully in 1912 the ancient Earldom of Norfolk [1312] to which he was the senior co-heir. The Norfolk earldom had originally been bestowed on the Bigod family. Roger Bigod surrendered the earldom to the King in 1302 and ten years later it had been regranted to Thomas of Brotherton, and the success of this claim depended on the validity of the surrender, as it was the regranted peerage which was under claim. He failed in his case, as it was held (in 1906) that the surrender of 1302 was invalid, and, as "The Complete Peerage" states: "the decision in the case involved a denial of the existence of the earldom in Thomas of Brotherton and his issue." The barony of Stourton which was created by patent in 1448, has existed continuously in the male line since that date. The baronies of Mowbray and Segrave were a different case. The first Lord Mowbray received a writ of summons to Shrewsbury in 1283 and other later summonses to undoubted Parliaments. The first Lord Segrave was also at Shrewsbury, but was also summoned to Parliament in 1295. The daughter of the 4th Lord Segrave married the fourth Lord Mowbray, and the titles since then have been held together. The baronies came through the Mowbrays, Dukes of Norfolk, to the Howards, Dukes of Norfolk, and so to 1777, when they fell into abeyance between the two daughters of Philip Howard, brother of the 9th Duke of Norfolk. One married the 16th Lord Stourton and the other the 9th Lord Petre. In 1877 the 20th Lord Stourton applied for the termination of the abeyance, and the case was decided in his favour.

He was also senior co-heir to the entire moiety of the Baronies of Strange de Blackmere, Talbot, and Howard, and senior co-heir to the baronies of Braose of Gower, Greystock, Dacre of Gillesland, Ferrers of Wemme, Verdon, Darcy of Darcey, and Giffard of Brimmesfield, &c. The family claimed, as Lord Mowbray, the premier barony of England.

The peer was head of the family which runs the annual Allerton Park Horse Trials at Knaresborough. The event, now into its third decade, typically attracts more than 500 riders from the four higher levels of national eventing, as well as around 2,500 visitors.

Edward Stourton was born 17 April 1953, the eldest son of Charles, Lord Mowbray, Segrave and Stourton, CBE [1923-2006], and his first wife the Hon Jane Faith de Yarburgh-Bateson [1933-98], daughter of the 5th Baron Deramore. His father – a Wodehousian figure, was head of one of the oldest Roman Catholic families in the country.

Educated at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire, he succeeded to his father's peerages, 12 December, 2006.

He gained control of the family estate on his 30th birthday in 1983, and soon afterwards sold Allerton Castle, the family’s 19th century Gothic house, to an American businessman, whose foundation renovated it. The castle now forms an impressive backdrop to the lakeside eventing venue.

He married, 12 July, 1980, Penelope (Nell) Lucy Brunet, daughter of Dr Peter Cameron Jamieson Brunet, of Oxford. Lady Mowbray, Segrave & Stourton survives him, with their five children, a son, James, and four daughters, the Hon Sarah Louise [born 1982], the Hon Isabel Laura [born 1983], the Hon Camilla Charlotte [born 1987], and the Hon Francesca Jane [born 1988].

Prince William with Miss Catherine Middleton, Prince Harry, and Princess Beatrice of York attended the marriage which took place, 8 January, 2011, at Aldborough, North Yorkshire, between Harry Buchanan Aubrey-Fletcher (b 1982) scion of the Aubrey-Fletcher Baronets, 3rd son of Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, 8th Baronet, and Lady Aubrey-Fletcher, of Buckinghamshire, & the Hon (Sarah) Louise Stourton (b 1982), eldest daughter of the 27th Baron Mowbray (28th) Baron Segrave & 24th Baron Stourton (b 17 Apr 1953), of Allerton Park, near Harrogate, North Yorkshire, and the Baroness Mowbray, Segrave & Stourton, &c.

The ancient peerages now devolve upon his only son, the Hon James Charles Peter Stourton, who was born 12 December, 1991.
