Clare, Baroness Margadale 1932-2020

_. Clare, Baroness Margadale, who died 4 May, 2020, aged 88, was the widow of the 2nd Baron Margadale [1930-2003].

She was born 1 April, 1932, as Clare Barclay, scion of that landed gentry family, of Higham, the eldest of the three daughters of Anthony Lister Barclay [1903-88], of Broad Oak End, Hertfordshire, by his wife the former Elizabeth Kathryn Bryson [1905-74], daughter of Hugh Wyatt Bryson [1868-1922], of Los Angeles, California, by his wife the former Blanche Engstrum [1881-1969].

Her younger sister, Carolyn [born 1936], married Gerald Balding, and the youngest sister, Alicia [born 1941], is wife of Sir Martin Dunne, KG.

Clare Barclay married 14 October, 1952, the then James Ian Morrison, eldest son of Major John Granville Morrison [1906-96], MP for Salisbury 1942-64, who, in 1965, was raised to the peerage as Baron Margadale, by his wife the former Hon Margaret Esther Lucie Smith [1908-80], daughter of the 2nd Viscount Hambleden. Clare's husband succeeded as 2nd Baron Margadale, 26 May, 1996.

Lady Margadale was widowed, 6 April, 2003. She leaves issue, two sons, Alastair [born 1958], and Hugh [born 1960], and a daughter, Fiona, Viscountess Trenchard [born 1954], wife of the 3rd Viscount. Her elder son, Alastair, is the 3rd Baron Margadale. His first wife was Lady Sophia Cavendish, daughter of the 11th Duke of Devonshire.
