The 6th Earl of Minto, OBE, JP, DL, Vice Lord Lieutenant, Borders Region [Roxburghe, Ettrick & Lauderdale], 1992-2003, died 7 September, 2005. He was aged 77.
Lord Minto was the 6th Earl (created 1813); a Baronet (created 1700); Baron Minto (created 1797); and Viscount Melgund (created 1813).
Gilbert Edward George Lariston Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, was born 19 June, 1928, son of the 5th Earl of Minto, by his wife Marion, OBE (she died 1974), daughter of G.W. Cook, of Montreal.
He was educated at Eton and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
Career:-->served in Malaya 1949-51; was ADC to the Commander-in-Chief, Far East Land Forces, 1951, to the Chief of the Imperial General Staff, 1953-55, to HE The Governor and C-in-C of Cyprus, 1955; transferred to Regular Army Reserve of Officers, 1956; Lieutenant, Queen's Body Guard for Scotland [Royal Company of Archers]; Director, Noel Penny Turbines Ltd, 1971-92; Regional Councillor [Hermitage Division], Borders Region, 1974-80, 1986-96; Convenor, Borders Regional Council, 1990-96;Member of the Executive of the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities, 1990-96; Deputy Traffic Commissioner for Scotland, 1975-81; Property Commissioner for Local Government in Scotland, 1995-98; President, South of Scotland Chamber of Commerce, 1980-82; President since 1987 of the Scottish Council on Alcohol, &c.
Lord Minto, of Minto, Hawick, Scotland, was appointed MBE (Mil) 1955; OBE 1986. He served as a JP for Roxburghshire from 1961; Deputy Lieutenant for the Borders Region [Roxburgh, Ettrick & Lauderdale] from 1983; &c. He succeeded to the peerages and baronetcy on the demise of his father, 1975.
The Earl was twice married thrice, firstly, in 1952, to Lady Caroline Child-Villiers (from whom he obtained a divorce in 1965) daughter of the 9th Earl of Jersey; secondly, in 1965, to Mary Elizabeth (b. 29 Dec 1936; died 24 Jan 1983), daughter of Peter Ballantine, of Gladstone, New Jersey, United States; thirdly, in 1991, to Mrs Caroline Larlham.
He is survived by his 3rd countess and by a son and a daughter from the first marriage. The son, Gilbert Timothy George Lariston, styled Viscount Melgund, born 1 Dec, 1953, now succeeds to the peerages & baronetcy.
The funeral takes place on Monday, 12 September, 2005 at Minto Parish Church, Nr. Hawick, Scottish Borders.
