The 3rd Baron Moyne 1930-2026

Lord Moyne.

The 3rd Baron Moyne, scion of the Guinness brewing dynasty and son of Diana Mitford who wrote about the Mitford family, and went into banking, died 30 October, 2026. He was 96.

Jonathan Bryan Guinness was born 16 March, 1930, son of Bryan, 2nd Baron Moyne (1905-1992), and the society beauty, the Hon Diana Freeman-Mitford (1910-2003), third of the six famed Mitford Girls, who, after divorcing Guinness, married Sir Oswald Mosley, 6th Bt.

Shortly after the birth of his brother Desmond, Diana met Sir Oswald Mosley, 6th Baronet (1896-1980), who was soon to become the leader of the British Union of Fascists. Diana married Mosley in the drawing room of the Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels in Berlin. Four years later, when Jonathan was ten, his mother was interned, [and] remained there until November 1943, her admiration for Hitler surviving the duration of the Second World War and the revelations of Nazi atrocities.

His childhood was spent in England and Ireland, mainly at the family’s houses at Biddesden in Wiltshire and Knockmaroon beside Phoenix Park in Dublin.

From The Times: While campaigning unsuccessfully for a seat as a Conservative MP, Jonathan Guinness, later the third Baron Moyne, attracted notoriety for saying that murderers should have razor blades left in their prison cells to enable them to “do the decent thing”. The press nicknamed him “Old Razor Blades”. Guinness later insisted he had been misquoted and meant that prisoners should be able to stay “decent” by shaving daily. It was the sort of remark that followed him through life. Many years later, welcoming a journalist to his London office, he remarked that the place had been compared to a brothel, adding hastily that he had never been in a brothel.

As a member of the Guinness brewing dynasty, he had seemed assured of a privileged place in life… yet financial troubles followed him into his later years. In his seventies, he became caught up in a Swedish fraud case, was declared bankrupt and helped to make ends meet by selling health bracelets.

In 1984, with access to unpublished papers and the surviving relatives on his mother’s side, Guinness published, with his daughter Catherine, The House of Mitford, which detailed the lives of Nancy the novelist, Jessica the communist, Unity the admirer of Hitler, and Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire. Reviewers found him too forgiving of Diana and Unity. When Diana died in 2003, at the age of 93, Guinness wrote letters to the press in her defence.

He was twice wed, firstly, 25 July, 1951 (div. 1963), Ingrid Olivia Georgia Wyndham (1931-2009), scion of the Barons Leconfield, daughter of Maj. Guy Richard Charles Wyndham (1896-1948), and his wife the former Grethe Wulfsberg; and married 2ndly, 10 January, 1964, Suzanne (Sue) Lisney (who died 2005), daughter of Harold William Denis Lisney, of Cadaqués, Gerona, Spain.

He succeeded his father as 3rd Baron Moyne, 6 July, 1992.

His first wife Ingrid married 2ndly, 7 August, 1963, Jonathan's cousin, (Henry) Paul Guinness Channon, later life peer as Baron Kelvedon (1935-2007), son of the diarist, Sir Henry 'Chips' Channon, MP (1897-1958), and Lady Honor Dorothy Mary Guinness (1909-1976), daughter of the 2nd Earl of Iveagh, KG (1874-1967).

From his first marriage he had three children, the Hon Catherine Ingrid Guinness (born 1 June, 1952), the Hon Jasper Jonathan Richard Guinness (1954-2011), and the Hon Valentine Guy Bryan Guinness (born 9 March, 1959).

From his second marriage he had two children, the Hon Sebastian Walter Denis Guinness (born 15 February, 1964), and the Hon Daphne Suzannah Diana  Guinness (born 9 November, 1967).

Lord Moyne had three further children with Susan Mary Taylor, daughter of Ronald Taylor, of Oldham, Lancashire, - Diana Gloria Isolde Rose Dimilo Taylor (born 1981), Aster Sophia Mary Taylor (born 1984), and Thomas Julian William Jon Taylor (born 1986),

Susan Taylor, who died in 2003, had travelled through Europe and Asia, worked at the Beatles’ Apple offices and performed in circuses. When they met in 1978 she was living in a stone hut in the foothills of the Pyrenees. She attended a party he gave at Cadaqués on the Spanish coast, and they met again at an art exhibition. They discovered an unlikely connection: she had served time in Holloway for a cannabis offence, and he told her that his mother had been imprisoned there. Taylor had never heard of Mosley. Guinness liked her lack of interest in politics. She eventually settled in Cornwall, and Guinness divided his time between her and his wife.

Guinness’s connection with the Guinness name extended to its housing charities and for 40 years — until his removal in 1997 — he served as a trustee of the Guinness Trust. His great-grandfather, Edward Cecil Guinness, later the first Earl of Iveagh, had established the trust in 1890 with £200,000 to provide decent homes for London’s working poor, setting aside another £50,000 for Dublin. The London trust built blocks of flats for poorer families to replace overcrowded accommodation while the Dublin fund became the Iveagh Trust, leading to Brendan Behan’s famous remark: “The Guinnesses have been good to the people of Ireland, but then again, the people of Ireland have been very good to the Guinnesses.”

Lord Moyne is succeeded in the peerage (created UK, 1932), by his second, but eldest surviving, son, the Hon Valentine Guinness, who was married to Lulu Rivett-Carnac (aka 'Lulu Guinness') the handbag and accessories designer.

Sir John Philip Howard-Lawson, 6th Baronet 1934-2026

Sir John Howard-Lawson.

Sir John Philip Howard-Lawson, 6th Baronet, died 17 October, 2026. He was 92.

His home was Hunter Hall, Great Salkeld, Penrith.

He was born John Philip Lawson, 6 June, 1934, the eldest son of Sir William Howard Lawson, 5th Baronet (1907-1990), of Corby Castle, by his wife the former Joan Eleanor Stamer (1909-1989).

A descendant of the 4th Duke of Norfolk, he assumed the surname and arms of Howard, 1962, and the surname of Howard-Lawson in 1992.

He succeeded his father, 3 June, 1990, as the 6th Baronet, of Brough Hall, Catterick [created UK, 1841].

He married 17 September, 1960, Jean Veronica Marsh (who died 2001), daughter of Colonel John Evelyn Marsh, OBE, DSO, by whom he had issue, two sons, Philip and Thomas, and a daughter, Julia.

His elder son, Philip (born 28 June, 1961), succeeds to the baronetcy.

In 2012 Sir John won a legal battle with his own son over the sale of their £2.5million 13th century ancestral home. Philip Howard, had claimed he was entitled to £1.5million from the sale of Corby Castle,  which had been in the family since 1611. Mr Howard's father Sir John Howard-Lawson, Bt, sold the Cumbrian castle in 1994 for £2.5million, along with its contents and a thousand acres of land. Mr Howard claimed his father had no right to sell the property, originally built as a peel tower in the 13th century, as he had failed to comply with the terms of a will made in 1934. Philip Canning Howard, his great-great-grandfather, had dictated that in order to inherit Corby Castle, his heirs must change their surname to Howard and take up the family coat of arms within 12 months. Mr Howard claimed Sir John had failed to do this, so never validly inherited Corby Castle and should not have benefited from its sale.

Lady Justice Proudman ruled in the High Court that Sir John had validly inherited the property. Her decision was upheld by Lady Justice Arden, Lord Justice Richards and Lord Justice Patten sitting in the Court of Appeal, who awarded Sir John £22,000 costs. Mr Howard, a business consultant, claimed his father, whose original surname was Lawson, had 'forfeited' his right to inherit the castle in 1961 by neglecting the terms of the will. But Sir John, who represented himself, insisted he had begun to use the name before the end of January 1962. The baronet also claimed the family was forced to sell Corby Castle when Philip Howard got into financial difficulties after taking on a major part of the estate. However, the case is not over as Mr Howard has applied to take it to the Supreme Court.

Lady Justice Arden said as she handed down her judgment that it was a 'very sad case' as the father and son had fallen out in a 'very bitter dispute'. The three judges agreed Mr Howard was trying to recover what he thought was his 'rightful inheritance' but that Sir John had 'sufficiently complied' with the terms of the will. They awarded £22,858 costs against Mr Howard.

The Howard family have previously been embroiled in a royal scandal, when, in 1572, Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, was beheaded for treason after scheming to marry Mary Queen of Scots.

His third son, William, bought Corby Castle in Cumbria, in 1611, and for nearly four centuries it passed down through ten generations, reaching Sir John in 1961.

The Howard and Lawson families were combined when Corby Castle passed to Philip Canning Howard's sole heir, his daughter Ursula. She married Sir John's grandfather, Sir Henry, the third baronet in 1899.

Nicola Jane Meinertzhagen 1946-2026

Nicola Jane (Nikki) Meinertzhagen died 15 October, 2026.

She was the widow of Peter Richard Meinertzhagen, scion of a wealthy merchant banking dynasty, and scion of that landed gentry family of Mottisfont Abbey, Romsey and Brockwood Park.

She was born in 1946, as Nicola Jane Phillips, daughter of Edward John Stanley Phillips (died circa 2008), of Old Place, Boveney, Berkshire, by his wife Edith Ruth Jane Lampard (1912-2003).

She married 19 April, 1967, Peter Richard Meinertzhagen (born 16 Apri, 1946), son of Daniel Meinertzhagen (1915-1991), was one of four so-called "Colonels" (managing partners) who ran the merchant banking house of Lazards — in a style so relaxed that he habitually snoozed at his desk after lunch with a copy of The Times over his face, and argued against competitive "touting for business".

Peter's mother was Marguerite Josephine Leonard (1914-2003)

Her husband was born into an Anglo-German dynasty which had been prominent in the City since a Daniel Meinertzhagen from Bremen married the daughter of another émigré, Frederick Huth, and became a partner in his London banking house in 1833. Though Huth & Co lost much of its trade-finance business during the First World War and closed in 1936, the Meinertzhagens became part of the City establishment — and lived in appropriately grand style at Mottisfont Abbey in Hampshire.

Peter’s uncle Luke Meinertzhagen (1916-84), was senior partner of Cazenove, while another uncle, Sir Peter Meinertzhagen (1920-99), ran the Commonwealth Development Corporation.

Her husband died 28 November, 2012, aged 66.

Nikki Meinertzhagen leaves four daughters, Candida, Lara, Natasha, and Alicia. A fifth daughter, Petra, predeceased her in 2010.

Sir William Frederick Payne Heseltine, GCB, GCVO, AC, QSO, PC 1930-2026

Sir William Heseltine, GCB, GCVO, AC, QSO, PC, died 2 October, 2026. He was 96.

The Guardian: [Heseltine] has a strong claim to have been one of the most consequential royal courtiers during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, and was perhaps her favourite. Not only was he the first Australian to enter the tweedy aristocratic atmosphere of the royal household, but during his 27 years at the palace, rising from an assistant information officer to being the queen’s private secretary (1986-90), he initiated changes that have shaped public perceptions of the family firm ever since.

In the words of the royal biographer Ben Pimlott, whereas Heseltine’s predecessors had done everything to keep the press out, he “saw it as his job wherever and whenever possible to let them in”. Heseltine, said Pimlott, “was the first press secretary who recognised a need to sell royalty to the public and, if necessary, to shape its behaviour accordingly”.

Sir William joined the Prime Minister's Department (Australia) in 1951, where he remained until 1962. He was Private Secretary to Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies from 1955 to 1959, Acting Assistant Press Secretary to the Queen from 1960 to 1961, and Acting Official Secretary to the Governor-General of Australia, The 1st Viscount De L'Isle, from May to August 1962.

From 1962 to 1964, Sir William was Assistant Federal Director of the Liberal Party of Australia, and in 1964 was attached to The Age (Melbourne). In the same year, he was attached to Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, for her tour of Australia. Heseltine joined the Press Office of The Royal Household as Assistant Press Secretary to the Queen and served in that position from 1965 to 1967. He was Press Secretary from 1968 to 1972.

In 1972, Heseltine was moved to the Private Secretary's Office proper, becoming Assistant Private Secretary. In 1977 in the Queen's Silver Jubilee year, he was promoted to Deputy Private Secretary and, in April 1986, to Private Secretary to the Sovereign, and Keeper of the Queen's Archives. He retired in October 1990.

He was born in East Fremantle, Western Australia, 17 July, 1930, the son of L.F. Turner, of Melbourne, he was twice married, firstly, to Ann Elizabeth Turner (who died in 1957), and married 2ndly, Audrey Margaret Nolan, daughter of S. Nolan, of Sydney, by whom he had issue, one son and one daughter.

He was appointed MVO in 1961, CVO in 1969, KCVO in 1982, and GCVO in 1988, CB, in 1978, KCB in 1986, GCB in 1990; AC 1988, and QSO 1990. He was sworn of the Privy Council in 1986.
