Lady Elliott, who died 1 May, 2023, aged 96, was a scion of the Butler landed gentry family, of Ewart Park.
She was born Oonagh Sophia Butler, in 1927, daughter of Sir Nevile Montague Butler, KCMG, CVO (1893-1973), diplomat, sometime ambassador to Brazil, by his wife the former Oonagh Rose McNeile (1898-1979); and married in 1958, Professor Sir John Huxtable Elliott, FBA (1930-2022), sometime professor of History at King's College London, son of Thomas Charles Elliott (1892-1957), and his wife the former Janet Mary Payne (1902-1991).
