Alan Lindsay Sanderson (the disclaimed 2nd Baron Sanderson of Ayot) 1931-2022

 Alan Lindsay Sanderson, who died 16 December, 2022, aged 91, was the 2nd Baron Sanderson of Ayot, who disclaimed his peerage for life in 1971.

He was born 12 January, 1931, son of Basil Sanderson (1894-1971), and his wife the former Evelyn Constance Mary Ismay (who died 9 Aug, 1940), and a grandson of Harold Arthur Sanderson, general manager of the White Star Line, and his wife the former Maud Blood, of New York City.

During the Second World War Harold Sanderson served as Director of Shipping in Port at the Ministry of Shipping from 1939 to 1941 and as Head of Port Transit Control at the Ministry of War Transport from 1941 to 1945. After the war Sanderson was managing director of the Shaw Savill shipping line from 1945 to 1959 and the firm's chairman from 1947 to 1963. He was Sheriff of the County of London in 1948, and created a hereditary peer in 1960, as Baron Sanderson of Ayot.

Alan Sanderson succeeded as 2nd Baron Sanderson of Ayot on his father's demise, 15 Aug, 1971, and he disclaimed the peerage for life under the terms of the 1963 Peerage Act, 28 September, 1971.

He married in 1959, Gertrude Boschler, daughter of Herman Boschler, by whom he had a son, Michael, and four daughters, Evelyn, Frances, Andrea and Stephanie. His only son, Michael (born 6 Dec, 1959), succeeds as 3rd Baron Sanderson of Ayot.
