Field Marshal The Baron Inge, KG, GCB, PC, DL 1935-2022

Field Marshal The Lord Inge, KG, GCB, PC, DL, died  20 July 2022, aged 86, was a senior British Army officer. He was the Chief of the General Staff, the professional head of the British Army, from 1992 to 1994 and then served as Chief of the Defence Staff before retiring in 1997. 

Peter Anthony Inge was born 5 Aug, 1935, son of Raymond Albert Inge and his wife the former Grace Maud Caroline Du Rose, and was educated at Wrekin College, and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.

Career: commissioned into the Green Howards in 1956, served in Hong Kong, Malaya, Germany, Libya and the UK; ADC to the GOC 4 Div, 1960-61; Adjutant, 1 Green Howards 1963-64; student Staff College, 1966; MOD 1967-69; Instructor, Staff College 1973-74; Commanding Officer 1 Green Howards, 1974-76; Commandant Junior Div Staff College, 1977-79; Commander, Task Force C/4 Armoured Brigade 1980-81; Chief of Staff, HQ 1 [BR] Corps 1982-83; GOC NE District and Commander 2nd Infantry Div 1984-86; Director Gen, Logistic Policy [Army] MOD 1986-87; Commander Northern Army Group, and Commander in Chief, BAOR, 1989-92; Chief of the General Staff 1992-94; ADC General to Her Majesty the Queen 1991-94; Colonel of The Green Howards, 1982-94; Colonel Commandant, RMP, 1987-92; APTC, 1988-97; Chief of the Defence Staff, 1994-97; Constable of HM Tower of London, 1996-2001.

He was appointed KCB in 1988, advanced to GCB, 1992, and appointed a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter in 2001. Sworn of the Privy Council in 2004.

Inge was raised to the peerage for life in 2001 as the Baron Inge, of Richmond in the County of North Yorkshire.

He married in 1960, Letitia Marion Beryl Thornton-Berry [1935-2020], scion of that landed gentry family, by whom he had two daughters, Antonia and Verity.
