The 2nd Baron Cobbold 1937-2022

 The Lord Cobbold, the 2nd Baron, owner of the magnificent Knebworth House, Hertfordshire, has died aged 84. He was a landowner and banker.

David Antony Fromanteel Cobbold (later Lytton-Cobbold) was born 14 July, 1937, son of Sir Cameron Cobbold (1904-87), scion of that landed gentry family, and his wife the Lady Margaret Hermione Millicent Lytton (1905-2004), daughter of the 2nd Earl of Lytton, KG, GCSI, GCIE, PC (1876-1947), sometime acting Viceroy of India.

David’s father served as Governor of the Bank of England 1949-61, and was raised to the peerage as the 1st Baron Cobbold in 1960, and served as Lord Chamberlain to the Queen’s Household, 1963-71. He was GCVO, and a Knight of the Garter, &c.

He succeeded to his father’s peerage and to the Knebworth estate on his father’s death, 1 Nov, 1987. The Knebworth estate has been in Lord Cobbold’s family since the days of King Henry VII in 1490. He later passed the running of the Knebworth estate to his son and heir.

The 2nd Baron Cobbold married 7 January, 1961, Christine Elizabeth Stucley (born 25 Apr, 1940), one of the last Debutantes to be presented to the Queen, third daughter of Major Sir Dennis Frederick Bankes Stucley, 5th Baronet (1907-83), and his wife the Hon Sheila Margaret Warwick Bampfylde (1912-96), daughter of the 4th Baron Poltimore (1882-1965), by whom he had issue, three sons and a daughter.

The eldest son, the Hon Henry Fromanteel Lytton-Cobbold, who was born 12 May, 1962, succeeds as the 3rd Baron Cobbold.
