The 9th Viscount Falmouth 1919-2022

 The 9th Viscount Falmouth, who died 7 March, 2022, aged 102, was the oldest living peer at his decease, and a former Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall.

Viscount Falmouth was a substantial landowner in Cornwall. The family estate at Tregothnan House, is situated near Truro, and has been in the Boscawen family for centuries.

George Hugh Boscawen was born 31 October, 1919, son of the 8th Viscount Falmouth (1887-1962), and his wife the former Mary Margaret Desiree Meynell (1894-1985), scion of that landed family, descended from the Viscounts (now Earls) of Halifax. 

George Boscawen, a Captain in the Coldstream Guards, 1939-45, succeeded to the viscountcy (created Peerage of Gt Britain, 1720) on his father’s death, 18 February, 1962.

The title Viscount Falmouth was created for his ancestor who served as Groom of the Bedchamber to Prince George of Denmark, husband of Queen Anne. The 1st Viscount was also Warden of the Stannaries and Comptroller of the Household to King George I, 1714-20.

The 9th Viscount was Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, 1977-94.

Lord Falmouth married 9 May, 1953, (Beryl) Elizabeth Price Browne (1925-2007), daughter of Arthur Harold Browne (1896-1977), by whom he had issue, four sons. The eldest son, the Hon Evelyn Arthur Hugh Boscawen (born 13 May 1955) succeeds as 10th Viscount.
