The 2nd Baron Denham, who died 1 December, 2021, aged 94, was the Chief Whip in the House of Lords during the administration of Margaret Thatcher.
Lord Denham, who took his seat in the upper house in 1950, retired from the House of Lords earlier this year.
Bertram Stanley Mitford Bowyer was born 3 October, 1927, the son of the then George Bowyer, MC, a Junior Lord of the Treasury 1927-29, and Comptroller of HM Household in 1935, who was created a baronet, 21 Jan, 1933, and advanced to a peer as Baron Denham, of Weston Underwood in the County of Buckingham, 24 May, 1937.
His mother was the Hon Daphne Freeman-Mitford [1895-1996], daughter of the 1st Baron Redesdale, and aunt of the celebrated Mitford sisters, including writer Nancy and Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire.
He succeeded his father in the baronetcy and peerage, 30 Nov, 1948, and succeeded to the baronetcy of Denham [cr 1660], in 1950, on the death of a kinsman. Lord Denham was elected to the House of Lords in 1999. He was sworn of the Privy Council in 1981, and appointed KBE a decade later. He retired from the Lords after 51 years service on 26 Apr, 2021.
Bertram [Bertie] Bowyer married 14 February, 1956, Jean McCorquodale [born 4 May, 1931], scion of that landed gentry family, daughter of Maj. Kenneth McCorquodale, MC [1894-1976]. and his wife the former Ellen Viva Martin [1895-1987], by whom he had issue, three sons, Richard, Henry and George, and a daughter, Jocelyn.
The eldest son, the Hon Richard Grenville George Bowyer [born 8 Feb, 1959], succeeds as 3rd Baron and 3rd Baronet.
