Lady Margaret Dorothea Stirling-Aird [nee Boyle] 1920-2021

The Lady Margaret Stirling-Aird, who died at Dunblane, 17 October, 2021, aged 100, was a scion of the Earls of Glasgow.

She was born Lady Margaret Dorothea Boyle, 20 November, 1920, third daughter of the 8th Earl of Glasgow [1874-1963], and his wife the former Hyacythe Mar Bell [died 1977].

She married firstly, 3 February, 1944 [div 1963], Capt Oliver Payan Dawnay, CVO [1920-88], courtier, scion of the Viscounts Downe, Private Secretary and Equerry to HM Queen Elizabeth [later Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother] 1950-56, and Extra Equerry to HM, 1956-62.

The collapse of Lady Margaret's marriage to Capt Dawnay caused something of a scandal in palace circles in 1963 when divorce resulted in ostracism from the Royal Family. Oliver Dawnay had fallen in love with the Hon Iris Peake, LVO, who had been Princess Margaret's lady-in-waiting for a decade. When the Dawnay's marriage was dissolved he married Iris Peake in December, 1963. Both left royal service thereafter. Iris Peake had worked for MI6 at the close of the Second World War, where she was a contemporary of the notorious double agent George Blake.

Lady Margaret married for the second time in 1973, as his second wife, Peter Douglas Miller Stirling-Aird [1915-2004], of Kippendavie Lodge, Dunblane, son of Kenneth Aird. Stirling-Aird died 10 July, 2004.

Lady Margaret leaves issue from her first marriage, two sons, Charles Dawnay [born 1946], and Ivo Dawnay [born 1952, a godson of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother], and a daughter, Caroline [born in 1950].
