Alwyne Arthur Compton Farquharson of Invercauld, MC 1919-2021

Capt Alwyne Farquharson of Invercauld, MC, 16th Chief of the Name and Arms of Farquharson, died 6 October, 2021. He was 102.

Alwyne Farquharson held the rare distinction of having been landlord to the Queen [who, for some years, leased grouse moors close to Balmoral from the Farquharson estate].

Captain in the Royal Scots Greys he was awarded the MC in 1945.

He was born Alwyne Arthur Compton, 1 May, 1919, scion of the Marquesses of Northampton, elder son of Maj Edward Robert Francis Compton [1891-1977], of Newby Hall, near Ripon, and Torloisk, Aros, Isle of Mull, and his 1st wife Sylvia Farquharson [1899-1950], of that Scots landed gentry family.

In 1949 he assumed the surname of Farquharson and was recognised as such by the Lord Lyon King of Arms. He was Scotland's longest serving clan chief who served as the head of Clan Farquharson for more than seven decades.

He married firstly, 3 Feb, 1949, as her third husband, Mrs Frances Strickland Lovell Gordon [died 1991], whose 1st husband was Hon James Henry Bertie Rodney [1893-1933], and 2nd husband was Charles Gordon. She was a daughter of Robert Pollard Oldham, of Seattle, United States.

He married 2ndly, 1993, Mrs Patricia Gabrielle Estelle Parry de Winton, widow of Nicholas John Denny Parry de Winton, scion of that landed gentry family, and daughter of Henry Simms Norman Simms-Adams.

Alwyne Farquharson leaves no issue from either marriage and is survived by Madame Patricia Farquharson.

On his 102nd birthday in May he handed over the chieftainship of the Clan Farquharson to his great-nephew, Philip Compton, who assumed the surname of Farquharson of Invercauld.
