_.Timothy David Holderness-Roddam, late the 14th/20th King's Hussars, who died 15 April, 2021, aged 78, was a scion of the landed gentry family of that name, of Roddam Hall, Northumberland.
Tim Holderness-Roddam was a passionate and knowledgeable advocate of eventing for many years. He gave his time freely to support, advise and promote the sport, including roles with British Eventing, British Equestrian, The Horse Trials Support Group and both Blenheim and Burghley Horse Trials. In 2010 Tim was presented with the British Equestrian Federation Medal of Honour in recognition of his outstanding achievement and contribution to the international equestrian world.
Timothy was educated at Radley College, followed by military service in the King’s Royal Hussars. His successful 30-year career at Tate & Lyle plc (UM Group) culminated in the role of MD of the United Molasses Group, where he was responsible for the worldwide trading, storage and distribution business.
Since retiring from the City in 2000, Tim held a number of consultancy and non-executive roles, including senior consultant to Bristol Port Company, which handles much of the import/export trade for the west of England; and a consultant to and former director of Abercrombie & Kent, the luxury and tailor-made travel business.
Tim was formerly a trustee of the pension fund of Countrywide Farmers plc and deputy Chair; Chair of the British Equestrian Federation Fund; Chair of Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials; Chair of The Horse Trials Support Group (HTSG), Director and Chair of the Finance Committee of British Eventing; and Deputy Chair of Friends of Conservation, an international charity operating mainly in Africa and the Indian sub-continent.
More recently he has been involved as a Director of British Equestrian; a member of the British Eventing Finance and Commercial Committee; and a member of the Burghley Horse Trials Committee.
Tim was married to Equestrian Olympic Gold Medallist and current British Eventing President, Jane Holderness-Roddam. Together they own West Kington Farms and Stud in Wiltshire, specialising in breeding top competition horses.
He was born 23 November, 1942, son of Major David Robert Holderness-Roddam [1918-97], and his wife the former Susan Heather Forman [1919-2004].
He married in Oct 1974, Jane Mary Elizabeth Bullen, CVO, CBE [born 1 July, 1948], scion of that landed family, daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel John Symes Bullen and his wife the former Anne Harris-St John.
Jane Holderness-Roddam is a great friend and Lady-in-Waiting of HRH The Princess Royal, and stood as a godmother for the Princess's son Peter Phillips in 1977. She, like HRH, was an event rider, winning Badminton Horse Trials in 1968 (on Our Nobby) and 1978 (on Warrior). She also won Burghley Horse Trials in 1976 (on 'Warrior'), and competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, winning team gold for Great Britain, alongside Richard Meade, Reuben Jones and Derek Allhusen. Currently, Holderness-Roddam owns a stables in North Wiltshire jointly with her husband.
Jane Holderness-Roddam was appointed Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (LVO) in 1998, Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2004, and Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in the 2020 Birthday Honours. She was presented with the Queen's Award for Equestrianism in 2009.
