Luis Hector Sosa Basualdo 1945-2020

_. Luis Hector Sosa Basualdo, who died in Buenos Aires, 9 December, 2020, aged 75, was a renowned Argentinian polo player, sporting companion of the Prince of Wales, and beloved by gossip columnists in the 1970s for his lothario behavior, and lavish lifestyle from casino to the Golden Eagles polo team. His reputation earned him the nickname Luis 'the Bounder' Basualdo.

He was born 5 September, 1945 in Buenos Aires, the son of Don Hector Sosa Basualdo, an Olympic horseman, and his wife Donna Amanda Teresa Bissoni Facio, a leading socialite.

Basualdo, who came to the UK in the 1960s, mixed in high society polo circles, and friends included the Prince of Wales, Andrew Parker Bowles, Major Ron Ferguson, and a myriad of 'debutantes' all to be found in the pages of Debretts, such names as Guinness, Manners, Ward and Spencer et al.

In 1972 he eloped with the teenage Hon Lucy Pearson [born 11 April, 1954], daughter of the croseus rich 3rd Viscount Cowdray [1910-95], of Cowdray Park, Sussex. Home was Lodsworth House, Sussex, one of the Pearson family stately piles.

The marriage ended in divorce in 1978. He had two children from his marriage to Lucy Pearson, Charlotte [born in 1974] and Rupert [born in 1976], who both took the Pearson name.

Basualdo was for some years the constant companion of Christina Onassis, who allegedly paid him a vast salary for the connection.
