_. Annette Howard [known as "Scruff"], has died in London, aged 71. For 16 years she was chatelaine of Castle Howard, in Yorkshire.
The former Annette Marie Smallwood was born in 1949, daughter of Charles Anthony Russell Smallwood [1917-87], of Storrington, Sussex, by his wife the former Mollie Gordon Buchanan Scott.
She married firstly, in 1974 [divorced 1977], as his second wife, the then Spencer Douglas David Compton, styled Earl Compton [born 2 Apr, 1946], son of the 6th Marquess of Northampton [1885-1978], by his wife the former Virginia Lucie Heaton [1919-97]. Her husband succeeded his father in 1978, as 7th Marquess of Northampton. The marriage was childless.
She married 2ndly, in 1983 [divorced 2000], the Hon Simon Bartholemew Geoffrey Howard [born 26 Jan, 1956], scion of the Earls of Carlisle, son of the Baron Howard of Henderskelfe [1920-84], by his wife the former Lady Cecilia Blanche Genevieve FitzRoy [1922-74], scion of the Dukes of Grafton, and became chatelaine of the great Castle Howard in Yorkshire, until her divorce from Mr Howard. The second marriage was also childless.
