Major Philip Hope-Cobbold, DL 1943-2020

_. Major Philip Hope-Cobbold, DL, late the 13th/18th Royal Lancers, who died 8 July, 2020, aged 76, was a scion of the Earls of Annandale & Hartfell.

His home was Glemham Hall, an Elizabethan stately home set in 300 acres of Suffolk countryside. The property came to him via his maternal family, the Cobbolds. He was a patron and former director of Ipswich Town Football Club.

He was born 27 December, 1943, as Philip Hope Johnstone, son of Major-General William August Ludwig Vernon Alexander Hope Johnstone [1914-93], by his wife the former Pamela Maud Cobbold [1920-1994], scion of that landed family, and a granddaughter of the 9th Duke of Devonshire.

He married firstly, 7 Dec 1968 [div 1984], Antonia Jay Hutton-Potts [born 9 January, 1948], daughter of Jack Hutton-Potts, of Mentmore, Buckinghamshire; married 2ndly, 21 Dec, 2002, Mrs Raewyn Margaret Hackett-Jones [1947-2016, nee Blanchfield].

He assumed by deed poll the surname of Hope-Cobbold in lieu of his patronymic, 1995. He leaves issue from his first marriage.
