Obituary: Major-General Sir Desmond Rice, KCVO, CBE 1924-2020

_. Major-General Sir Desmond Rice, KCVO, CBE, who died 14 July, 2020, aged 95, was a former Vice-Adjutant General and sometime an Extra Gentleman Usher to the Queen.

Desmond Hind Garrett Rice was born 1 Dec, 1924, son of Arthur Garrett Rice by his wife the former Alice Constance Henman.

Career: Commissioned into The Queen Bay's, 1944; 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards [1958]; First Commanding Officer, The Royal Yeomanry 1967-69;  Colonel GS 4 Division, 1970-73; BGS [MO], Ministry of Defence, 1973-75; Director of Manning, Army 1977-78; Vice-Adjutant General, 1978-79; Colonel, 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards, 1980-86; Secretary, Central Chancery of Orders of Knighthood, 1980-89; an Extra Gentleman Usher to HM The Queen, 1989-;  &c.

Appointed OBE [1970], CBE [1976], CVO [1985], and KCVO [1989].

He married in 1954, Denise Ann Ravenscroft, by whom he had one daughter.
