Mark Sylvain Bates Van Der Weyer 1948-2020

_. Mark Sylvain Bates Van De Weyer, who died 3 May, 2020, aged 72, was head of that landed gentry family, formerly of New Lodge. He was a great-grandson of the 7th Viscount Powerscourt.

He was born 7 February, 1948, eldest of the three sons of Sylvain Victor Bates Van De Weyer [1917-76], by his wife the former Mary Jane Holmes; and married in 1970, Catherine Isabel Candler [1949-98], daughter of Edward Vizard Candler [1910-99], of Beverley, East Yorkshire, by his wife the former Ellen Margaret Crossley [1917-97], by whom he had issue, two sons, Alexander [born 1973], and Nicholas [born 1982].

The elder son, Alexander Edward Van De Weyer succeeds as head of the family.

The family is of Belgian origin. Jean Sylvain Van De Weyer was for many years the Belgian minister to the Court of St James's.
