Alexander Ivan Bedini Guthrie of Guthrie, 22nd of That Ilk 1967-2020

_, Alexander Ivan Bedini Guthrie of Guthrie, 22nd of that Ilk died from coronavirus, in London, 23 March, 2020. He was 52. The chieftainship dated back to the 12th century. Previous chiefs of clan Guthrie served under William Wallace, fell at Flodden and more recently, won the Military Cross.

Conscious of his distinguished forebears, Alexander Guthrie took his role as clan chief seriously, assiduously attending clan Guthrie gatherings as far afield as America. He was wont to turn up at formal occasions in Rome, where he lived, clad in full clan regalia. On more than one occasion he had to explain to the local carabinieri why it was that he was carrying a large sword.

He was born 3 October, 1967, the son of Conte Leonardo Bedini-Jacobini, by his wife the former Loetitia Dawn Phillips [b 26 Feb, 1945- d 1978]. His mother was a daughter of Capt Mark Henry Philips [1922-2014], late the Coldstream Guards, head of that landed family, of Gretton House, Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, by his 1st wife Moyra Irene Guthrie of Guthrie, 21st of that Ilk [1922-84], daughter of Colonel Ivan Douglas Guthrie, MC, of Guthrie Castle, Angus.

Alexander inherited the chieftainship from his grandmother, who died 3 June, 1984.

Educated in Italy and England, he attended UCL and lived between Italy and the UK. He leaves a partner, Tal, and a younger brother, Christian.
