_. The Baron Williams of Elvel, CBE, PC, who died 30 December, 2019, aged 86, was a business executive, life peer, and step-father of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Charles Cuthbert Powell Williams was born 9 Fevruary, 1933, the son of N.P. Williams by his wife the former Muriel de Lerisson Cazenove, scion of that landed family.
Chairman of the Prices Commission 1985-92; appointed CBE in 1980, and created a life peer in 1985, and sat in the Lords on the Labour benches. He was sworn of the Privy Council in 2013.
He married in 1975, as her second husband, Jane Gillian Portal [born 11 Dec, 1929], daughter of Lt-Col Gervas Edward Portal [1890-1961], by his wife the former Iris Mary Butler [died 2002], and mother of the Most Rev and Rt Hon Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, &c.
