_. Field Marshal the Lord Bramall, KG, GCB, OBE, MC, JP, DL, died 12 November, 2019. He was 95.
Edwin Noel Westby Bramall was born 18 December, 1923, son of Major Edmund Haselby Bramall, late the Royal Artillery, of Sloane Sq, London SW3; educated at Eton; commissioned in the King's Royal Rifle Corps in 1943; served in the Second World War in NW Europe, 1944-45 [awarded the MC, 1945], occupation of Japan, 1946-47; Instructor, School of Infantry 1949-51; Instructor at the Army Staff College 1958-61; on the staff of Earl Mountbatten of Burma with responsibility for reorganization of the Ministry of Defence 1963-64; Commanding Officer 2nd Green Jackets, KRRC;, Malaysia 1965-66; GOC 1st Div BAOR, 1973; Lieutenant-General 1973; Commander British Forces in Hong Kong 1973-76; General 1976; Commander-in-Chief UK Land Forces 1976-78; Vice Chief of the Defence Staff 1978-79; Chief of the General Staff 1979-82; Chief of the Defence Staff 1982-85; ADC [General] to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 1979-82; Colonel Cmmandant 3rd Battalion Royal Green Jackets 1973-84; Colonel, 2nd Goorkhas from 1976; appointed Field Marshal 1982; Lord Lieutenant of Greater London, 1986; Trustee of the Imperial War Museum from 1983 [Chairman in 1989]; President of the MCC 1988-89; &c.
Bramall was appointed OBE in 1965; KCB, 1974; GCB 1979; KG 1990.
He was a created a life peer as Baron Bramall, of Bushfield in the County of Hampshire, 1987.
He married in 1949, Dorothy Avril Wentworth Vernon [died 22 July, 2015, aged 93], the only daughter of Brigadier-General Henry Albemarle Vernon, DSO, by whom he had issue.
