_. Jonathan Gathorne-Hardy, who died 16 July, 2019, at Aldeburgh, aged 86, was an author, biographer and social historian. He was a scion of the Earls of Cranbrook.
Born in 1933 a son of Surgeon-Commander the Hon Antony Gathorne-Hardy, by his wife the former Ruth Elizabeth Thorowgood, and was a grandson paternally of the 3rd Earl of Cranbrook.
He married Sabrina Viola Tennant [b 1943], scion of the Barons Glenconner, daughter of David Pax Tennant [1902-68], by his wife Virginia Penelope Parsons [1917-2003], later Marchioness of Bath, wife of the 6th Marquess.
He leaves a daughter, Jenny [born 1965], and son, Benjamin [born 1967].
