Field Marshal Lord Vincent of Coleshill, GBE, KCB, DSO 1931-2018

_. Field Marshal the Lord Vincent of Coleshill, GBE, KCB, DSO, life peer, Chief of the Defence Staff 1991-92, died from a heart attack, 8 September, 2018. He was 87.

Richard Frederick Vincent was born 23 Aug, 1931, son of Frederick Vincent by his wife the former Frances Elizabeth Coleshill, and was educated at Aldenham School, and the Royal Military College Sandhurst.

He was commissioned into the Royal Artillery; National Service, 1951; served in Germany 1951-55; Gunnery Staff, 1959; Radar Res, Establishment, Malvern, 1960-61; BOAR, 1962; Technical Staff Training, 1963-4; Staff College, 1965; Commonwealth Bde, Malaysia, 1966-68; Ministry of Defence, 1968-70; Comd 12th Ligh Air Defence Regiment in Germany, UK, and Northern Ireland, 1970-72; Instructor at the Staff College, 1972-3; Greenlands Staff College, Henley, 1974; Military Director of Studies, RMSC 1974-75; Comd 19 Airportable Brigade, 1975-77; RCDS, 1978; Deputy Military Secretary, 1979-80; Comdt Royal Military College of Science, 1980-83; Master-General of the Ordnance, Ministry of Defence, 1983-87; VCDS 1987-91; CDS, 1991-92; Chairman of the Military Committee of NATO, 1993-96; Master Gunner, St James's Park, 1996-2000; &c.

He was awarded the DSO in 1972; appointed KCB in 1994; GBE, 1990; created a life peer as Baron Vincent of Coleshill, of Shrivenham in the County of Oxford, 1996.

He married in 1955, Jean Paterson Stewart, daughter of Kenneth Stewart, by his wife the former Jane Banks, by whom he had 2 sons and one daughter. He was predeceased by one of his sons.
