Lord De Mauley appointed Master of the Horse

_. Lord De Mauley, the 7th Baron, has been appointed to a senior post in the Royal Household. Thye 61 year-old peer will succeed the Lord Vestey as Master of the Horse, on Lord Vestey's retirement in January.

The appointment sees the return to the Royal Household of a member of the Ponsonby family, long associated with the Crown for generations.

Rupert Charles Ponsonby is from a line of senior respected courtiers. Sir Henry Ponsonby was Equerry to the Prince Consort and Keeper of the Privy Purse to Queen Victoria. Sir Henry's son, Frederick Ponsonby, was assistant private secretary and equerry to Queen Victoria in the closing years of her reign, and occupied the same post in the reign of Edward VII. He was Keeper of the Privy Purse and Equerry to King George V, and Treasuser also to the founder of the House of Windsor.

The De Mauley peerage was created in 1838. William, the 1st Baron, married a daughter of the 5th Earl of Shaftesbury; Charles, the 2nd Baron, married a Ponsonby cousin, daughter of the of the 4th Earl of Bessborough; the 4th Baron married a daughter of the 2nd Baron Sudeley; and the fifth Baron wed a scion of the Marquesses of Zetland.

Rupert Ponsonby succeeded his uncle, Gerald, the 6th Baron in 2002; and married later in 2002, the Hon Lucinda Royle,  a daughter of the life peer, Baron Fanshawe of Richmond. He was elected to the House of Lords as a Conservative peer in 2005.

Lord and Lady De Mauley have no children. They were last month guests of the Queen at Windsor Castle and were in the Royal procession to Royal Ascot.

Lord De Mauley is a relative, albeit distantly, of the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex. His ancestor, the 3rd Earl of Bessborough married Lady Henrietta Spencer, daughter of the 1st Earl Spencer.
