He was a son of Commander Charles Francis Alington (1919-87), by his wife Anne, daughter of Alexander John Hew Maclean (1880-1930) 16th Laird of Ardgour, by his wife the former Hon Muriel Annette Burns (1893-1969), daughter of the 3rd Baron Inverclyde (1864-1919), &c.
