The 9th Baron Langford, OBE 1912-2017

_. The Lord Langford, 9th Baron, died 12 November, 2017. He was 105.

Geoffrey Alexander Rowley-Conwy was one of Wales's most colourful characters. He was an officer who staged a hair-raising 1,659-mile escape in a decrepit sailing boat across the Indian Ocean after the fall of Singapore.

He was born 8 March, 1912, the son of Capt Geoffrey Seymour Rowley-Conwy (1877- killed in action at Gallipoli, 1915), by his wife the former Bertha Gabrielle Cochran (d 1984), and was descended from the 1st Baron. He succeeded as 9th holder of the peerage on the death of a kinsman, 19 Aug, 1953.

Lord Langford married firstly, 1939 (div 1956), Ruth St John Murphy (who died in 1991); married 2ndly, in 1957,Grete von Freiesleben, who died in 1973; married thirdly, in 1975, the family nanny, Susan Winifred Denham.

By his second marriage Lord Langford had three sons, and he is succeeded by his third son, the Hon Owain Grenville Rowley-Conwy, who was born 27 December, 1958.
