He was born at Worthing, Sussex, 6 January, 1931, son of Ted Kavanagh, a writer for the radio and creator of "It's That Man Again" a vehicle for the comedian Tommy Handley.
P.J. Kavanagh married 1stly, 28 Feb, 1956, Sarah Jane [Sally] Philipps [b 14 Jan 1934], scion of the Barons Milford [Baron, UK, cr 1939], daughter of the Hon Wogan Philipps [afterwards 2nd Baron Milford], by his 1st wife, the writer Rosamond Lehmann. His wife dsp 22 June, 1958, aged 24, after contracting polio in Java; married 2ndly, 1965, Catherine [Kate] Ward.
