Sir (William) Marcus John Worsley, 5th Baronet (1925-2012)

_.Sir (William) Marcus John Worsley, 5th Baronet, died at his home Hovingham Hall, North Yorkshire, 18 Dec, 2012, aged 87. Sir Marcus served as Conservative MP for Keighley, 1959-64, and for Chelsea, 1966-74, was PPS to the Minister of Health 1960-61, to the Minister without Portfolio, 1962-64, and to the Lord President of the Council, 1970-72.

Sir Marcus, whose baronetcy of the UK was cr in 1838, served as Lord Lieutenant for North Yorkshire, 1987-99, and was High Sheriff of North Yorks in 1982.

He was born 6 Apr, 1925, eldest son of Sir William Arthington Worsley, 4th Baronet (1890-1973), by his wife the former Joyce Morgan Brunner, dau of Sir John Brunner, 2nd Barronet (cr UK, 1895), and was a brother of Katharine Worsley, who married at York Minister in 1961, HRH The Duke of Kent, a first cousin of HM The Queen.

Worsley succeeded to the baronetcy on his father's demise in Dec, 1973, and he ran the Hovingham estate until handing it over to his son in 1987. He married 10 Dec, 1955, the Hon Bridget Assheton (who d 2004), daughter of the 1st Baron Clitheroe, PC (Peerage of the UK, cr 1955), by whom he had issue, three sons, William, Giles and Peter, and one daughter Sarah. He was predeceased by his youngest son.

The baronetcy passes to his eldest son, William Ralph, who was born 12 Sept, 1956.
