Death of Rear-Admiral Sam Salt, who commanded HMS Sheffield in the Falklands War

_.Rear-Admiral James Frederick Thomas George (Sam) Salt, CB, scion of
the Salt Baronets (cr UK 1899, of Standon) who died 3 December 2009,
aged 69, commanded HMS Sheffield - the first British warship to be
sunk by enemy action after the Second World War

James Frederick Thomas George Salt, always known as Sam, was born 19
April 1940, six months before his father Lt-Cdr George Stevenson Salt
(b 1908), was lost in the submarine Triad which sailed from Malta for
war patrol in the Gulf of Taranto and was never heard from again.
Sam's mother was the former Lilian Bridget Francis.
Rear-Adml Salt married in1975, Penelope Walker, daughter of Anthony
Walker. She survives him with their three sons; another son
predeceased him. Sam's sister is Lady Spencer-Nairn, wife of the 3rd
Baronet, &c.
