Lord Moore of Wolvercote dies aged 88

The Baron Moore of Wolvercote, GCB, GCVO, CMG, QSO, PC, who died 7 April, 2009, the day after his 88th birthday, was sometime Private Secretary to the Queen and father-in-law of Peter Gabriel.

He was born 6 April, 1921, son of Cecil Moore, ICS; educated at Cheltenham College, and Brasenose Coll, Oxford.

Career:-->Principal Private Sec to the First Lord of the Admiralty, 1957-58, British Deputy High Commissioner, Singapore, 1961-65, Director of Public Relations, Ministry of Defence, 1965-66; Assistant Private Secretary to Her Majesty The Queen 1966-72, Deputy Private Secretary to HM The Queen, 1972-77, Private Secretary to HM The Queen and Keeper of the Queen's Archives, 1977-86; Permanent Lord in Waiting to Her Majesty the Queen 1986-2009; Chairman of Trustees King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Foundation of St Catharine's since 1986; served in World War II as a Flight Lieut, Bomber Command, RAF.

Cr CMG 1966; CB (Civil) 1973; KCVO 1976; KCB 1980; GCVO 1983; GCB 1985; Cr Baron Moore of Wolvercote, of Wolvercote, City of Oxford (Life Peer) 1986.

Married 1945, Joan Ursula, dau of Capt M.E. Greenop, DCLI, and has issue: (i) the Hon Sally Jane Moore, b 1949; (ii) the Hon Jill Georgina Moore, b 1951, who married 1971 (div 1990) the rock musician Peter Gabriel.

Lord Moore of Wolvercote lived in a "Grace and Favour" apartment at Hampton Court Palace.

  1. The sad loss of a fine man. Philip was a gracious, strong and humble man with a wonderful sense of humour.
    His love of golf, Rugby and cricket in ever changing priorities could always provoke a lively discussion!
    His well documented career is a testimony to his selfless dedication to duty. He was truly blessed with the support of his wife,Joanna and daughters Sally and Jill. A man I will always admire and remember.
