Baron Monro of Langholm

The Baron Monro of Langholm, life peer, former Conservative Government Minister, died 30 August, 2006, after a short illness. He was aged 83.Hector Seymour Peter Monro was born 4 October, 1922, son of Capt Alastair Monro,of Langholm, and Mrs Monro, and was educated at Canford and King's College, Cambridge.Served in the RAF 1941-46; Member of the Queen's Body Guard for Scotland, Royal Company of Archers; Member of Dumfries Cunty Council, 1952-67; Chairman, Dumfriesshire Unionist Association, 1958-63; Conservative MP for Dumfries, 1964-97; Scottish Conservative Whip, 1967-70; a Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury, 1970-71; Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Scottish Office, 1971-74; Opposition Spokesman on Scottish Affairs, 1974-75; Opposition Spokesman on Sport, 1974-79; Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (with special responsibility for sport), DoE, 1979-81; Scottish Office, 1991-95; created a life peer in 1997 as Baron Monro of Langholm, of Westerkirk in Dumfries and Galloway.He married 1stly, 1949, Elizabeth Anne Welch (d. 1994), of Longstone Hall, Derbyshire; 2ndly, 1994, Mrs Doris Kaestner, of Baltimore, USA. He leaves 2 sons from his first marriage.Service at Langholm Parish Church on Monday 4 September .
