Lady Jane Bethell (1923-2006)

The Lady Jane Bethell (nee Pleydell-Bouverie) who died 21 July, 2006, aged 82, was the widow of (Richard) Anthony Bethell (d. July 1996), sometime High Sheriff and Lord Lieutenant of Humberside, scion of that BLG family, of Rise, Hull. She was b. 1923, as Lady Jane Pleydell-Bouverie, daughter of the 7th Earl of Radnor, KG, KCVO (1895-1968), sometime Keeper of the Privy Seal to the Prince of Wales and Lord Warden of the Stannaries, by his 1st wife, the former Helen Olivia Adeane (d. 1985); she married Tony Bethell in 1945, and was mother of 2 sons, Hugh (who married a St Aubyn of the Barons St Levan) and William, and 2 daughters, Camilla (who married a scion of the Viscounts Hood), and Sarah (who married a Ratcliffe-Brotherton). A Service of Thanksgiving takes place at All Saints' Rise Hull, 31 July 2006.

Lydia Duchess of Bedford (1917-2006)

Lydia Duchess of Bedford died at St Peter's Hospital Chertsey, 25 July, 2006, after a fall. She was b. 1917, the Hon Lydia Yarde-Buller, daughter of the 3rd Baron Churston, MVO, OBE (1873-1930), by his wife Jessie (d. 1960) daughter of Alfred Smither. Her siblings included (1) Joan who married (i) a Guinness (ii) the Aly Khan (and was mother of HH the Aga Khan), and (iii) Viscount Camrose, and (2) Denise, wife of the 5th Baron Ebury. Lydia married (i) 1938, Capt Ian Archibald de Hoghton Lyle, Black Watch (who was killed in action in 1942), eld son of Sir Archibald Lyle, 2nd Baronet, and (ii) 1947 (divorced 1960) as his 2nd wife, the 13th Duke of Bedford (1917-2002).She leaves a daughter, by the first marriage, Lorna Elwes, and a son from the 1st marriage, Sir Gavin Lyle, 3rd Baronet, and a son from the second marriage, Lord Francis Russell.
Funeral service to take place on Wednesday 2 August 2006, at Chobham St Lawrence Church, Chobham, Surrey.

Julia F. Lawson-Tancred (nee Murray), wife of Andrew Peter Lawson-Tancred, [b. 18 February, 1952], eldest son of Sir Henry Lawson-Tancred, 10th Baronet, and the late Lady Lawson-Tancred, of Aldborough, North Yorkshire, gave birth to a son, Thomas Alexander Claude, 17 June, 2006, a brother for Flora Isabel Jean, who was b. 31 July, 2004.
Mrs Lawson-Tancred is a daughter of Mr John Murray, of Edinburgh, and Mrs Claude Murray, of London.

Diana Lady Eardley-Wilmot, who died 4 July 2006, was the widow of Sir John Assheton Eardley-Wilmot, LVO, DSC, RN, 5th Baronet (1917-95). Mark Aubrey Tennyson was b. 28 March, 1920, a younger son of the 3rd Baron by his wife the Hon Clarissa Tennant (d. 1960), daughter of the 1st Baron Glenconner, and was educated at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth.
Career:- Royal Navy 1937-60; served in the Second World War, 1939-45 on destroyers in action in the Atlantic & Meditterean (mentioned in despatches in 1945); Production Manager, Rowntree Mackintosh (South Africa) 1960-67; Export Sales Director, Joseph Terry & Sons (UK), 1968-72; Skied for the Royal Navy, 1947-51; Captain, Royal Navy Cresta Run team, 1951-54.
He married in 1964, Deline Celeste Budler, who d. 1995. He leaves no issue, and the peerage (created in 1884) devolves upon his Lorship's cousin, David Harold Alexander Tennyson, b. 4 June 1960, of of Flat 3, 165 Clarence Street, Riccarton, Christchurch, New Zealand.

Guy Newman Gilbey (1952-2006)

Guy Newman Gilbey, who died at Melbourne, Australia, 19 July 2006, aged 53, was a scion from the family from which the Gilbey Baronets (cr 1893) descend. He was b. 23 Aug 1952, 2nd son of James Newman Gilbey (b. 1921), by his wife the former Celia Sparrow. He was a first cousin of James Gilbey (b. 1956), renowned as Diana, Princess of Wales's "Squidgy", &c. The Telegraph death notice says he was "Much loved by Siobhan and all his family". I have no details of a marriage, or of his issue, if any.

Frank Speir is a son of Mr Thomas Francis Eyre (Tom) Speir, [b.1941], of Middleton Tyas, North Yorkshire, and Mrs Richard Hall, of Hales, Shropshire, and Alix is the former Miss E. Alix McConnel, daughter of Captain and Mrs Ian McConnel, of Brailes, Oxfordshire.
The Speir family have been landowners at Middleton Tyas for 300 years. Francis Speir's paternal grandfather married a Baker Baker [landed gentry]; his great-grandfather married a Fletcher of Saltoun [landed gentry]; his gt-gt-grandfather married a daughter of the 2nd Baron Gifford; & his gt-gt-gt-grandfather married a daughter of Sir William Napier, 8th Baronet, of Merchistoun.

The Hon. Catherine Waldemar Brown (nee Gully) wife of Harry H.P. Waldemar Brown, gave birth to a daughter, Persephone Yannick, 19 June, 2006, a sister for Honor Sophie Theresa, who was b. 22 June, 2004. Harry is the younger son of Commander & Mrs Nicholas Waldemar Brown, of London. Mrs Waldemar Brown is the former Hon. Catherine Mary Albinia Gully (b. 1971), only daughter of the 4th Viscount Selby (1942-97), of Shuna Castle, Island of Shuna, Argyll, and Viscountess Gully, of Ardfern, Argyll.

The Earl of Stair is a great-nephew of the late Queen Elizabeth, Consort of George VI. His maternal grandfather, the Hon Sir David Bowes Lyon, KCVO, was Her Majesty's younger brother.

Lady Evans, who died 3 July, 2006, aged 85, at Rottingdean, was the wife of Sir (Sidney) Harold Evans, CMG, OBE, 1st (and last) Baronet, who was created a Baronet in 1963, and who died in 1983. She was Elizabeth, daughter of William Jaffray, of Aberdeen, and married Sir Harold in 1945. One daughter, Annabel Frances, b. 1956.

She was b. circa 1911, 2nd daughter lof the Rev. Arthur Henry Fletcher, MA, of Cadogan Gardens, London SW3; married (i) 5 Jan 1939, Maj. the Hon. Alexander Hardinge Patrick Hore Ruthven, The Rifle Brigade (1913-42); she was raised to the rank of the widow of the eldest son of an earl as Viscountess Ruthven of Canberra, so long as she remained a widow, June 1945 (following the bestowal of the Earldom of Gowrie on her father-in-law); married (ii) 1952, Maj. Derek Cooper, late the Life Guards. She was mother of the 3rd Earl of Gowrie, PC, b. 29 Nov, 1939, sometime a Conservative Government Minister, and the Hon Malise Walter Maitland Knox Hore Ruthven, b. 1942.

His Honour Major General Sir David John Hughes-Morgan, CB, CBE, 3rd Baronet, died 15 July, 2006. He was b. 11 Oct, 1925, son of Sir John Vernon Hughes-Morgan, 2nd Baronet (1900-69), by his wife Lucie Margaret Jones-Parry (d. 1987), of that BLG family; was educated at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth; career:- Major-General, Army Legal Corps; sometime a Circuit Judge on the South-Eastern Circuit; MBE (Mil) 1959; CBE (Mil) 1973; CB (Mil) 1983; succeeded to the baronetcy on the demise of his father, 1969; married 1959, Isabel Jean Blacklock Gellatly Milne Lindsay (d. 1994), daughter of John Milne Lindsay, of Annan, Dumfriesshire, by whom he had 3 sons. The baronetcy (cr. 1925) now passes to his eldest son, Ian Parry David Hughes-Morgan, b. 22 Feb, 1960.

Polly Joanna Jean Bigham

The Mistress of Nairne, wife of the Hon Edward (Ned) John Hallam Bigham, Master of Nairne (b. 1966), son and heir of the 4th Viscount Mersey (also Lord Nairne in the peerage of Scotland), gave birth to a daughter, Polly Joanna Jean, 3 July, 2006, a sister for Flora Diana Joan, who was b. 17 May, 2003. Flora's parents married, 8 December, 2001, at St Cuthbert's Kirk, Dalmeny, West Lothian, Scotland. Clare Bigham was the former Clare Schaw Miller, daughter of the late Mr Robert Schaw Miller and Mrs Schaw Miller, of Newgardens, Dalmeny.

The Viscount Cobham, of Hagley Hall, Worcestershire, died in Spain, 13 July, 2006. He was aged 63.

John William Leonard Lyttelton, was 11th Viscount (cr 1718) and also Baron Cobham (cr 1718); Baron Lyttelton, Baron of Frankley (1756, renewed 1794), Baron Westcote (Ireland 1776).
He was born 5 June 1943, the eldest son of the 10th Viscount Cobham, KG, PC, GCMG, GCVO, TD, sometime Lord Steward of the Household, by his wife Elizabeth Alison (d. 1986), daughter of J.R. Makeig-Jones, CBE, and was educated at Eton and Christ's College, New Zealand; Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester. Career: landowner, Deputy Lieutenant for the West Midlands from 2000. He succeeded to the peerages on the death of his father in 1977.
He was twice married, (i) in 1974 (divorced 1995) to Penelope Anne, daughter of Mr Roy Cooper by his wife Dorothy Henshall (now Mrs John Turner). His first wife is now the partner of the Rt Hon David John Mellor, PC, QC (b. 12 Mar 1949) former Conservative Cabinet Minister, broadcaster and journalist; married (ii) 1997, the yachtswoman, Dr Lisa Clayton, the first British woman to sail single handed non-stop round the world. He leaves nonissue from either marriage, and the peerages now devolve upon his Lordship's next brother, the Hon. Christopher Charles Lyttelton, b. 23 Oct, 1947, who married in 1973, Tessa Mary, daughter of Colonel A.G.J. Readman, DSO, by whom he has one son and one daughter.
