Lady Logan, widow of Sir Douglas William Logan

Lady Logan, who died 7 May, 2006, aged 89, was the widow of Sir Douglas William Logan (1910-87). Her husband was born in Liverpool in 1910 and went on to be educated at University College, Oxford. During 1935-1936 he held the Henry fellowship at Harvard and during 1936-1937 was assistant lecturer in Law at the London School of Economics. Logan was called to the bar (Middle Temple) in 1937 and also elected a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. During World War Two Logan worked for the Ministry of Supply before being appointed in 1944 as Clerk of the Court at London University where he became Principal in 1948. In 1959 Logan was knighted and went on to receive honorary fellowships from the London School of Economics (1962), University College Oxford (1973) and University College London (1975) as well as honorary degrees from numerous universities around the world.

Lady Stakis, widow of Sir Reo Stakis....

Lady Stakis, who died 6 May, 2006, was the widow of the hotel magnate, Sir Reo Stakis. Her late husband opened Scotland's first casino on his way to building a massive personal fortune - he died in 2001, aged 88. Sir Reo was only 14 when he left his home in Cyprus in 1928 and headed for the UK - with just a suitcase full of lace goods made by his mother and £50 in his pocket. The future could have been so different if a railway official hadn't managed to retrieve the case when it was stolen at London's Victoria Station. She was Annitsa Petroppouou.The funeral took place at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Luke, Glasgow, 18 May, 2006.

Lieutenant-Colonel Sir John Mansel Miller,GCVO, DSO, MC, Crown Equerry, 1961-87, an Extra Equerry to the Queen since 1987, died 17 May, 2006, aged 87; he was b. 4 February, 1919, the third son of Brigadier-General Alfred Douglas Miller, CBE (1919), DSO (1902) (b. 1 Mar 1864; d. 5 Dec, 1933), of Shotover House, Wheatley, Oxfordshire, by his wife Ella Geraldine Fletcher (d. 1935), scion of the Fletchers of Saltoun, daughter of John Fletcher of Saltoun Hall, and descended from the Earls of Wemyss & March. DSO (1944), MC (1944), CVO (1966), KCVO (1974), GCVO (1987). He never married.

George Askew: Big Brother contestant's Royal connections

The Hon. (Oliver) Piers St. Aubyn, MC, who died at his home in Cornwall, 24 May, 2006, aged 85, was the younger brother, and heir presumptive of the 4th Baron St. Levan. He was b. 12 July, 1920, son of the 3rd Baron (b. 1895; d. 1978), by his wife, the former Hon Clementina Nicolson, daughter of the 1st Baron Carnock. He was educated at Wellington, and St James's School, Maryland, USA; was High Sheriff of East Sussex, 1982-83; served in WW2 as Capt 60th Rifles and Parchute Regt (mentioned in despatches, awarded the MC); married 1948, Mary Bailey (d. 1987), daughter of Bailey Southwell, of Crocodile Leap Farm, Olievenhoutpoort, South Africa, by whom he had issue. His son, James Piers Southwell St. Aubyn, b. 1950, is now heir pres. to the Barony of St. Levan (UK 1887) and the Baronetcy (UK 1866).

Sir Basil Brickwood, 3rd Baronet

Sir Basil Graeme Brickwood, 3rd Baronet, died 16 May, 2006. He was aged 82. He was b. 21 May, 1923, a yr son of Sir John Brickwood, 1st Bt, Chairman and Managing Director of Brickwood & Co Ltd, brewers, of Portsmouth, and he succeeded to the baronetcy (cr. 1927) on the demise of his elder half-brother, Sir Rupert Redvers Brickwood, in 1974. He served with the RAF 1940-46. He married (i) 1947, Betty Cooper, and (ii) 1956, Shirley Anne, daughter of Richard Wallace Brown, and leaves daughters by his 2nd marriage. The funeral is at Haycombe Crematorium, Bath on 25 May, 2006.

Thea Marchioness of Ely

Thea Marchioness of Ely, who died 5 May, 2006, was the widow of the 7th Marquess of Ely (1903-69). She was Thea Margaret Gronvold, daughter of Lars G. Gronvold, of Hove, and married in 1928, the then George Henry Wellington Tottenham, styled Viscount Loftus. In 1935 he succeeded his father as Baron Loftus (UK 1801), Earl of Ely, Viscount Loftus, and Marquess of Ely (Ireland created 1801) and a Baronet (cr. 1780). Her husband died in 1969 without issue, and was succeeded by his kinsman. The funeral is at St Paul's Church, Chichester, 17 May, 2006.

James Edward Cecil Fairfax

Vanessa C. Fairfax, wife of the Hon. Rupert Alexander James Fairfax (b.1961), gave birth to a son, James Edward Cecil, 10 May, 2006, a brother for William Thomas John, who was b. 4 June, 2004.
Rupert is the youngest son of the late 13th Lord Fairfax of Cameron and of Sonia Lady Fairfax of Cameron, and Vanessa C.Roberts, daughter of Mr John Roberts and Mrs Angela Roberts.
Rupert Fairfax was additional assistant private secretary to the Prince and Princess of Wales, 1986-88. His mother was a temporary Lady of the Bedchamber to QE11 1967-71.

The Baron Simon of Glaisdale, PC, who died 7 May, 2006, aged 95, as Jocelyn Edward Salis Simon was Conservative MP for Middlesbrough, 1951-62, Financial Secretary to the Treasury in Macmillan's Administration, 1958-59, and Solicitor-General, 1959-62; Knighted in 1959; sworn of the Privy Council in 1961; President of Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Div of the High Court, 1962-71; a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, 1971-77; created a life Baron in 1971 as Baron Simon of Glaisdale, of Glaisdale in the North Riding of York; married twice, is survived by his 2nd wife, the former Fay Elizabeth Leicester Pearson, by whom he had issue. He was b. 15 Jan 1911..... He was the last surviving person to have been appointed a King's Counsel...all living QCs have been appointed in the present reign....

The Baroness Reigate, who died 30 April, 2006, aged 92, was the widow of the life peer, Baron Reigate, PC, (1905-95), who as John Kenyon Vaughan-Morgan, was Conservative MP for Reigate 1950-70, created a Baronet in 1960, and a life peer in 1970. She was Emily Redmond Cross, daughter of William Redmond Cross, of New York City, and married John Vaughan-Morgan in 1940. She leaves 2 daughters, Julia & Deborah.

Luke is the eldest son of Alan Lillingston and Lady Vivienne Margaret Lillingston, nee Nevill), and is a daughter Tabitha, daughter of Sir Malcolm Ross, KCVO, & Lady Ross.
Luke is a maternal grandson of the late 5th Marquess of Abergavenny, KG (1914-2000) by his wife the former Mary Patricia Harrison (1915-2005), and his wife is a daughter of the Comptroller, Lord Chamberlain's Office. Tabitha's maternal grandfather, Gen Sir Michael Gow, was Equerry to Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester. Tabitha's is also a great-granddaughter of the 1st Baron Mottistone, and has descents from the Earls of Erne and noble house fo Hamilton.
