Lord Gray of Contin, a life baron, former Conservative MP for Ross and Cromarty, Lord Lieutenant for Inverness, 1996-2002; died at the Highland Hospice, Inverness, 14 March, 2006. He was 78.
James Hamish Hector Northey Gray was born 28 June, 1927, the son of J. Northey Gray, of Inverness, and was educated at Inverness Royal Academy.
Career:-->served in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, 1945-48; a director of private and family companies 1950-70; parliamentary and business consultant 1986-2000; Conservative MP for Ross and Cromarty, 1970-83; an Assistant Government Whip, 1971-73; a Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury, 1973-74; an Opposition Whip, 1974-Feb. 1975; Opposition Spokesman on Energy, 1975-79; Minister of State, Department of Energy, 1979-83; Minister of State, Scottish Office, 1983-86; Government Spokesman on Energy, House of Lords, 1983-86; Member of Inverness Town Council, 1965-70; Deputy Lieutenant for Inverness 1989-94, Vice Lord Lieutenant of Inverness, 1994-96, &c. Lord Gray of Contin was a non-executive director, Allied DEals Capital Ltd; President British-Romanian Chamber of Commerce from 1999.
He was sworn of the Privy Council in 1983; created a life peer as Baron Gray of Contin, of Contin in the District of Ross & Cromarty, 1983. He married in 1953, Judith Waite Brydon, of Helensburgh, by whom he had 2 sons and 1 daughter.
The funeral is at East Church, Academy Street, Inverness, Monday 20 March 2006.
