Dr John Arnfield Heap, CMG

Dr John Arnfield Heap, C.M.G., - who died at Harston, Cambridge, 8 March, 2006, aged 74, exercised a powerful influence on government policy in Antarctica and, later, the direction of both Arctic and Antarctic research. He was head of the polar regions section of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1975 to 1992. He married in 1960, Margaret Grace Gillespie, daughter of Captain Sir Stewart Spicer, 3rd Baronet, RN; she survives him with a son, the BBC reporter Thomas John Gillespie (Tom) Heap (b. 1966), and two daughters....
